However, it's true that when creating a single-player RPG this huge, its easier to forgive the cracks around the edges. Skyrim gets so much right that I can overlook its faults. If you've ever wanted to get truly lost in a game and want the freedom to play any type of character you can imagine, you owe it to yourself to pick up this game.

They've created a world as much as they've created a game, and it's utterly brilliant. If you've got a computer that can run it, and the ability to manipulate a keyboard and mouse in any way, you owe it to yourself to play Skyrim.

Technically, Skyrim is fantastic, but in creating memorable experiences, it is an utter triumph. Bugs are rare and often minor, and the same pitfalls that have plagued previous titles are still present, but you’ll learn to ignore these slight mishaps, and embrace the positives – the expertly crafted locations, the numerous systems available, the varied quests, the wonderful aesthetic and aural vision. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is a magnificent hive of creativity and technical clout, and holds a world so open it frequently threatens to overwhelm. Skyrim is forever charming and consistently engaging, and will carve a completely different adventure for every player put under its dazzling spell.

If you’re looking for just one RPG to pass the time with this year (and probably next), Skyrim is definitely it. It’s an improvement over the previous Elder Scrolls games, and certainly Bethesda’s best title to date. I’m still pouring hours that I really don’t have into the game, and find it hard to pull myself away from a second adventure. It does have some technical flaws, but overall I feel like they do little to detract from the experience I’ve had with the game. This is definitely the most polished, open world adventure from Bethesda, and I look forward to playing a lot more of it in the months to come.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is every single reason to love a Western role-playing game, condensed into a single comprehensive experience with nothing lost in the conversion process. It is a game that will drown those who step into its absorbing, overwhelmingly detailed world, a game that will bury you and refuse to let go. Yet your submergence will be agreeable, your burial ecstatic, and the hands placed around your throat welcomed like those of a lover's. To play Skyrim is to enter into a relationship, one that provides feelings of empowerment, yet demands total submission. Submit you will, for The Elder Scrolls V is the new zenith of role-playing games and it commands you to look up.

Minor issues aside, Skyrim is hotter than a dragon's backside after three courses at a curry house, and if you're the sort of person who favours tunics over T-shirts or prefers a tankard of mead to a pint of Stella, chances are this is the game for you. Likewise, if a deep combat system, an engaging plot, a wonderful cast of characters and a stunning, open-ended game world sounds like something you might be interested in, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim should be at the top of your list.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is less a product of creativity than an act of creation. The accomplishment on display is without equal, but it’s the sublimation of those efforts into a deeply personal experience that is the lasting effect and elicits the compulsive desire to consume more and more of what it has to offer. Playing it, I could recall getting the first Nintendo system and sitting down with my brother to play Super Mario Brothers. Upon reaching the subterranean level 1-2, the dramatic aesthetic shift awakened us to the giddy thrill of realizing that we had no idea what the game had in store ahead, and our excitement became an uncontained rapturous exaltation. Eighty hours into Skyrim, I’m still feeling like that 11-year-old.

Bethesda crafts role-playing games that are hard to do justice to in a traditional review. For gamers who live for this sort of thing, each person’s play-through becomes their own unique experience – leading to water cooler moments that not everyone gets to share. Skyrim seems filled with these and yet, I have a feeling you won’t experience half of what I did nor will I travel the same paths you pursue. That’s the fun and beauty of this title – each adventurer begins from the same Point A and may end at the same Point B – but the paths we travel in between are vast and meandering and consistently surprising. And that’s Skyrim’s biggest accomplishment – it greatly adds to the conversation. In a marketplace where console RPGs are bigger than they’ve ever been before, Skyrim’s arrival marks a fitting Return of the King.

Such a game feels less like purchasing an entertainment product and more like buying a house or proposing marriage. It's something you're going to be living with for hundreds of hours, and it's full of little quirks that will alternately delight and infuriate you. More the former than the latter, hopefully. I'm having a hell of a time tearing myself away long enough to write a review. There are still houses to rob, snotty shopkeepers to set on fire, piles of bones yet to be rearranged to spell out rude words, and I suppose I should get around to doing something about all those dragons eventually. Speaking of marriage, haven't had a chance to do that either. I've invested a considerable amount of time into this game and it still feels like I've only scratched the surface. I'm looking forward to continuing my adventures of the frozen north long after this holiday season, and it's without a doubt one of the best games I've played this year, if not one of the best RPGs of the last decade.

Skyrim is a transcendent experience. It may not be perfect, but it excels in almost every aspect of design. There are games that you play and there are games that you experience, and this is the latter. It sucks you in, and you will get lost in its depths. So go buy Skyrim, and then call your friends and your boss, and warn them that they won’t hear from you for a while.

This is a monumental, landmark game, and it's hard to think of how to actually improve it. My above points are thoroughly true and I stand by all of them. But as the score reflects, my heart is not in the criticism here, I’m just being perverse and desperate to find reasons to spend less time playing it. I really wish it was worse, because it’s going to be a painful draw on my evenings for months to come. 14 hours of play has merely scratched the surface of something utterly huge and engrossing. It won’t be to everyone’s taste, obviously – the geeky teenage fantasy note will put some off, and the sprawling world is overwhelming to the point that it really saturates you, there is too much to take in at once. Savour this like the finest of wines, if you can, and it will repay you with moment after moment of awe and wonder. I, however, will be drowning in this vintage until bubbles come out of my ears. Goodbye, everyone, I have to save Tamriel from darkness by stealing all its plates.

If you only have enough cash for one game this holiday season, and one of the main criteria is that this game has to last you until next holiday season, then The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim for the Xbox 360 should be your game of choice. Skyrim will suck you right in and you might not come out until you start to grow grey hairs. Bethesda has once again managed to crank out yet another fantastic open world RPG game with an endless amount of quests and interactivity that is sure to stand the test of time. While some of the bugs, glitches and load screens will aggravate you at times; the fact remains, Skyrim is a game you should not avoid.

I really can not stress enough, this is a watershed moment for gaming. A game that is both deep, fulfilling, accessible and fun that could last you a year all for £40/$60 is just a no-brainer of a purchase. If those technical niggles are resolved then feel free to add that extra .5 to the score!

Even with these issues there is only one way to describe Skyrim and that is epic. There is so much to see, do and experience that it’s exceedingly easy to get lost in the fantasy. It’s not a remarkable or radical departure from Oblivion, so if that game left you cold, Skyrim will too. For those who embraced that lifestyle, you will find Skyrim is Oblivion+++. Buy it now, ditch all your responsibilities and say goodbye to the rest of 2011 and perhaps even 2012 as well.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is the best open world first person role playing game that Bethesda has ever created and everyone who had fun with Oblivion, Morrowind or the Fallout series should pick it up and play through it at least two times (for story reasons) using two very different builds to get close to everything that the game has to offer.

These problems, as unwanted as they are, don’t hold Skyrim back from being Bethesda Game Studios’ finest release to date. This is one of those games that I go into with a clear idea of what I want to accomplish, but somehow along the way find myself on the other side of the continent with eight hours of gameplay under my belt and no checkmarks next to my planned tasks. Skyrim ruled my life for two straight weeks, and I wouldn’t be surprised if it becomes a fixture in my gaming rotation for the remainder of the year. It's one of the biggest, most content rich games I've had the pleasure of playing.

It's difficult to ever feel completely satisfied with a play session of Skyrim. There's always one more pressing quest, one more unexplored tract of land, one more skill to increase, one more butterfly to catch. It's a mesmerizing game that draws you into an finely crafted fictional space packed with content that consistently surprises. The changes made since Oblivion are many, and result in a more focused and sensible style of play, where the effects of every decision are easily seen. Featuring the same kind of thrilling freedom of choice The Elder Scrolls series is known for along with beautiful visuals and a stirring soundtrack, playing Skyrim is a rare kind of intensely personal, deeply rewarding experience, and one of the best role-playing games yet produced.

The games we normally call open worlds – the locked off cities and level-restricted grinding grounds – don’t compare to this. While everyone else is faffing around with how to control and restrict the player, Bethesda just put a fucking country in a box. It’s the best open world game I’ve ever played, the most liberating RPG I’ve ever played, and one of my favourite places in this or any other world. In case I’m not getting it across, this is a thumbs-up.

The most difficult reviews to write are games like Skyrim. Bad titles are easy to write reviews for as their flaws stick out in obvious ways. Skyrim delivers a mind blowing level of content wrapped in a package that would be worth the experience at twice the price. The flaws are so minor, especially when compared to all of the things that this game does right, that it’s difficult to even quantify anything less than a perfect score. Congratulations to Todd Howard and his team – Skyrim is, and by a dragon-sized margin, my top pick for RPG of the 2011. And now…off to pick more pockets.

There are hundreds of reasons to fall in love with The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. It makes improvements across the board over Oblivion, but doesn’t try to reinvent the wheel and won’t appeal to players yet to appreciate The Elder Scrolls. It’s a fantastic Action-RPG with an amazing world to explore, unique quests and combat tailored to each player. It’s not perfect, and is full of glitches as expected, but fixes will come. Skyrim is the experience most were waiting for and one of the best to come out of a star-studded end to 2011.

It almost wouldn't be a Bethesda game without sometimes-underwhelming performance, strange bugs, insane NPCs and all those other open world flaws and gameplay contrivances, but it speaks to the quality of the rest of the game that once you get more than an hour into Skyrim that all just won't matter. I was mad when I got stuck in the floor of a dungeon once and had to reload a save ten minutes prior - but I was also so excited to continue playing that the anger didn't last. With Skyrim Bethesda have truly succeeded in crafting not a sandbox, but a world. It's a world that's more exciting to live and play in than any other they've created. It's a game where the world is the greatest character of all, reigning supreme over all others. Skyrim's world is beautiful. That, combined with exciting gameplay, open-ended character development and engaging story threads is all it takes to be truly great - but it all starts with the world. From that, through that, the game itself is beautiful too.

So, to answer the original questions... yes, it most certainly lived up to its hype and, in my opinion, Skyrim is the new benchmark against which all RPGs will be measured. It's a fantastic game, with an incredible amount to do and a beauty the likes of which has yet to be seen on current consoles, but there is a distinct lack of magic in Skyrim and so, with a reported 190 hours of gameplay remaining, the interest has already waned. What's important, however, is that it took the equivalent of twenty playthroughs of most modern single player campaigns for that to happen. The fact that this pains me as I genuinely want to continue playing is a testament to how good it actually is.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim continues a long standing tradition of excellence for Bethesda's role playing series. Though it retains the depth and strategic elements of the previous games, it's also the series most accessible title, making it a great jumping on point for fans new to the series. With all of its exploration and content, you're going to be playing Skyrim for a long time, but that's okay, you didn't like sunlight anyways did you?

But it's hard to really criticize a game for not holding up after 100-150 hours. Most games don't last that long -- and with the ones that do, I'm usually ready for them to be over a good bit before that time. When I hit that 100-hour mark, I had been upon an extended (and disorganized) hike around the world and had loved almost every minute of it. Some missions might not have been particularly fun, there might have been some glitches and the game eventually crumbled under itself, but the ride to that point was intensely fun -- the most I've had with a game in probably a couple generations of systems.

Skyrim is a beautiful game. Skyrim is a well-developed piece of software. Skyrim is a forward-only time machine (in that it will suck hours and hours of your life away) and an excuse to buy a next-gen console if your PC can’t run it. Skyrim is so addictive and so distracting that it’s difficult to say anything bad about it. It would be a disservice to anyone who considers themselves a true gamer to miss this one.

In the light of the game's impressive strengths, however, all of this criticism feels like unnecessary nitpicking. Skyrim is easily one of the strongest and best examples of the Western RPG, and it further establishes Bethesda's reputation as one of the most talented and creative forces in the gaming industry. Moreover, it offers players a world so vast they could easily become lost in it, and so beautiful they may never wish to return from it. See you all next spring...

You want Skyrim. It’s just about everything you wanted from a new Elder Scrolls game, and it has dragons, too. What more could you ask for?

If you've played previous Elder Scrolls games, glitches and oddities don't come as a surprise. Nevertheless, Skyrim comes in a year graced with multiple quality RPGs that feature tighter combat, fewer bugs, better animations, and so forth. But to be fair, none of those games are endowed with such enormity. Yet The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim doesn't rely on sheer scope to earn its stripes. It isn't just that there's a lot to do: it's that most of it is so good. Whether you're slashing a dragon's wings, raising the dead back to life, or experimenting at the alchemy table, Skyrim performs the most spectacular of enchantments: the one that causes huge chunks of time to vanish before you know it.

Other RPGs such as Disgaea and Final Fantasy XII may rival the total hours of gameplay one can derive from Skyrim, but they can only do so through mass quantities of grinding. What they can’t rival is Skyrim’s incalculable amount of content and the sheer variety it has to offer, which I’m fairly certain topples even that of several existing MMOs. Whether it’s story quests, randomly stumbling upon a new dungeon, seeking out dragons, micromanaging everything you’ve collected and crafted, or doing dastardly deeds for the Daedric gods, Skyrim is indescribably massive. And, despite a handful of notable shortcomings, more often than not it is jaw-droppingly beautiful and thoroughly satisfying to play.

Ultimately, Skyrim is a spectacular game. Huge, full of rewards and things to see, read and do. Still, the “console friendly” approach did leave its mark and the technical problems, coupled with some excessive simplification don’t bode well for Bethesda’s reputation. Yet even though I wasn’t that enthralled in this universe like in the other titles of the series, I can’t deny its achievements. Maybe because I want to find the last part of that magical amulet.

Oblivion is in my top five most overrated RPGs of all time, while Fallout 3 is one of my favorite current-gen RPGs. The Elder Scrolls V sits somewhere between the two. Indeed, Skyrim strongly resembles its predecessors at times, and the catalogue of small changes and minor additions makes it more of the same. Skyrim takes few risks. Perhaps the only risk it takes is failing to match up to its competition in individual areas. Other RPGs released this year have better stories, sharper graphics, and more visceral combat. Skyrim doesn't really care. The latest Elder Scrolls has such confidence in the allure of its open-world structure that it shirks the need to compete. And, it largely succeeds in being better than the sum of its parts. So grab a tankard of mead, wrap yourself in a tundra beast's hide, and stoke the meadhall's fire. There is a long winter ahead.

As I mentioned earlier this game did not break any new ground for me. Some of the games elements can be dated back to Catacombs 3d. But this game isn’t about what new elements have been brought in, its about how they added the elements to make a game worth playing. Skyrim will give hours of fun to anyone who gives it a chance, even people who don’t want to have anything to do with the actual storyline can still run off and have their own fun in the numerous towns and cities that dot the landscape.

For newcomers, you will be so overwhelmed by the sheer volume of things to do in this huge world that it won't really bother you. As a longtime fan, I can honestly say there were some much needed improvements, but that this is still a very familiar, fun, and still rather unique experience. Because The Elder Scrolls games are so damn good, I couldn't ask for much more. But for the next release, it would be nice to see more time being spent fixing some of the problem areas that exist. Overall, this one of the best games of the year, and one that is completely deserving of your money and time. It is a lot of fun, no matter how you choose to play and regardless of its many problems. It certainly is the best Elder Scrolls title to date, it just didn't feel like a massive step up from its predecessor. Instead, it opted to take a more lateral approach, and in my opinion the experience suffered slightly this time around because of it.

When taken in total, it must be admitted that The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim does not deviate much from the established Elder Scrolls formula. However, the painstakingly-designed world in combination with the retooled leveling system represents the most polished version of that formula to date. There's something to be said for sticking with what one knows and refining it, and in Skyrim's case, there's a lot to be said for it.

Once you’ve found the parameters that Skyrim works with, it’s not difficult to play by its rules, and even enjoy it. There is a huge, jaw dropping world to discover at whatever pace you desire. Along the way you’re free to author your own story, defining your unique character and experience through whatever style of play you prefer. When you’re lost in its rich landscape and enthralled within its fiction, Skyrim thrives, and is truly unparalleled; it’s when you take a closer look, you can’t help but discover the seams holding this tapestry together.

This sprawling, Nordic-themed RPG feels like an interactive Lord of Rings movie. Skyrim's attention to detail is amazing, especially when you consider its massive scale. The rugged wilderness looks very natural, and the towns, dungeons, relics, and characters all seem to have a purpose and back-story. You'll find entire books in this game that you can actually read! The graphics have an illustrated quality, and the snowy scenery looks breathtaking when bathed in moonlight. As with most RPGs the focus is on exploration, resource management, character development, and an epic storyline. Skyrim held my attention longer than most because it's so accessible. In the early going you wield powerful weapons, cast spells, shoot arrows, pick locks, and battle dragons. I like how "time stops" when you access your inventory, allowing you to switch weapons or use a critical item. The main storyline is a series of quests, some of which require you to travel over huge expanses of land.

Touch wood I’m still without any of those issues, but talk of lag returning post-patch doesn’t bode well. I clocked up 350 hours in Oblivion. Am I going to be able to do that here? Or will my ballooning save file eventually cripple my game? “Review your experience,” they said. So far I’m having an incredible time. I don’t want it to end but it could at any time. The patch seems to only be a temporary fix, and what about the people who aren’t online? I love this game, I really do, but I can’t give it the score I want in its current state. That would be unfair to anyone forking out £40 for a something that might work. It might not. The most amazing game of the year is in there somewhere. I really hope Bethesda can get it out.

For all Bethesda's ambition, why haven't they gotten better at the basics of moment-to-moment gameplay? This is the same game they've been making since 2002's Morrowind. In fact, you can trace this design as far back as Bethesda's 1990 Terminator game, in which you played Kyle Reese battling the Terminator across an open map of Los Angeles. Has any other developer worked with the same basic idea for more than two decades and still asked you to accept such fundamental compromises as this sloppy melee system, overbearing inventory management, and brittle AI scripting? When so many other issues have been solved, when computers and console systems are finally ready to realize Bethesda's ambitious vision, why do these more pedestrian issues persist? For the most part, Skyrim is a triumph of world building that deserves recognition, praise, and the many hours you'll pour into it. But Skyrim is also a disappointing punt.
