Electronic Super Joy is a fast-paced side-scrolling platform game. The player controls a character (Captain Lewis) who must navigate worlds filled with deadly traps and enemies. The character basically can only run and jump, but later he gains other abilities, like "smash" attack, double jump and limited flying ability. These abilities are given in certain stages though and do not stay with the character forever.

Many stages scroll automatically, forcing the player to make split-second decisions and memorize the stage layout. The game boasts high difficulty level, on par with Super Meat Boy. In contrast with challenging gameplay the backgrounds are drawn in bright colors and the soundtrack is techno dance music. The game consists of three worlds, fifteen stages each, plus several bonus stages in world four. To unlock the bonus stages the player must collect a number of stars which often are located in hard to reach areas. At the end of each world the player must fight a boss, and the fight usually lasts for several stages.
