Eragon is an excellent treat for fans of the books and soon to be fans of the film. The game covers a lot of territory while doing a great job of bringing a decent amount of challenge and thrills to the masses. While it's not clear if we'll see more interactive works based on the series, the talented folks over at Stormfront have done the source material proud with yet another fine fantasy-based action game.

Looks like the video games and the movies industries start to interact more and more often and it seems to be a boost for the both of them. Well, the game offers about 8-10 hours of gaming experience and I can't really say I was particularly impressed with it. However it did make me wonder about the movie and I must admit I can't wait for it to hit the screens. All in all, if the game was meant to be a preview to the movie, than it met its goal beautifully. Otherwise, despite the fun experience and appealing storyline, I'm sorry to say it's not a must have of the action adventure genre.

While it's true that Eragon is not a game that will change your life or keep you hooked to your TV for 60 hours, it is a really damned fun co-op title where you and a buddy can wreak havoc on big orc-like critters with sick-looking neck-snapping and gut-stabbing moves.

While I appreciate the attempt to expand the genre with flying dragon combat, those sections of the game are brief and not particularly compelling. Unless you're a hardcore fan of the book series and film, I'd take a pass on Eragon.

Because of Lord of the Rings: Two Towers and Forgotten Realms: Demon Stone, developer Stormfront Studios is no stranger to movie-based hack n’ slash or games involving magic and dragons. For some reason, this talented studio just couldn’t find its groove with Eragon. The game boasts a handful of interesting ideas – such as track-based dragon riding and action-packed finishing moves – but the core gameplay just doesn’t have any fire to it. Your sword attacks feel weak, and casting a spell takes far too long to ever be useful. You can definitely see moments of the brilliance that you would expect from Stormfront, but it’s hidden within mediocrity.

Eragon is a mediocre title that fails be become a good movie-based game or a very bad one. The game's character models, voice-acting, and sweeping fantasy score are the only items that hold-up throughout the experience, with the combat system loosing its luster early due to overly repetitive gameplay. Average gamers will complete the game on hard in under nine-hours and with no draw to play it again; it is hard to recommend this as anything other than a one-day rental for even a fan of the source material.

I wish I could say I was surprised but, like so many other film-inspired titles, “Eragon” was clearly meant to be just another cog in the giant marketing machine – quality took a backseat to just getting it done in time for the film’s premiere. Our loss.

For the most part, Eragon is a solid game. Nothing stands out as being particularly noteworthy in it, but it's not bug-ridden and may provide a worthy adventure to play through for fans of the franchise. If you're looking for a fun action game though, it'd probably be best to look elsewhere. That is, unless you're looking for some easy achievements to earn.

Xbox1UP
Eragon is, in the end, a competent fantasy beat-em-up on PS2 and Xbox, and a fairly sloppy port for 360. The only thing that can be held against is that it's a brand-new game that looks like it's already been around the block a few times. Well, that and it might have insultingly undershot the target demographic a bit. Most of us were better at these kinds of games when we were young. Tweens or teens could play through this game with their thumbs cut off and a frontal lobe tied behind their back.

Xbox 360Game Chronicles
Loyal fans of the books will probably want to check this game out, but in actuality those are the same fans that will suffer the most disappointment. Having never read the book or watched the movie I was able to approach Eragon from a purely gaming standpoint and was totally disappointed. Not only did it not live up to the franchise material upon which it was based, it just wasn't a good game. Eragon is short, linear, easy, and failed to engage me past the first or second level, by which time you have pretty much seen and done most everything you are going to do in the game. Sure, they mix up the environments and throw in some clumsy dragon levels, but at the end of the day or the game (whichever comes first), you'll come away with sore thumbs and a serious mood of regret for having spent any time with this lifeless adventure.
57
Xbox 360GameZone
Eragon is a game that could have been a lot better but falls apart due to a most likely rushed development cycle to have this game released the same time the movie comes out. Even though the Xbox 360 version contains two additional levels and boss fight this is not really worth the price of admission since there are so many better games already out on the market.

Eragon is a case of a developer attempting to tick boxes for the sake of a license rather than trying to create a truly entertaining piece of software. Littered with occasionaly glimmers of hope, Vivendi’s attempt to create a true killer-app sadly falls flat, with most of the game feeling uninspired and largely by-the-numbers. Bound to entertain the odd movie goer, Eragon holds little charm for anyone else and feels entirely run-of-the-mill throughout.

Eragon isn’t a bad game per se but is ultimately an average affair as it offers very little innovation to hack and slash gaming. The production values in general appear to be quite high and it does a reasonable job of being entertaining whilst it lasts. There are a few encounters that are pretty dull especially the boss battles which seem to drag on unnecessarily. To say the game is worthy of a purchase I would perhaps say only if you really enjoyed the film and even then there really isn’t much on offer once the story has been completed. For a rental game on a cold winters day then sure Eragon might be worthy here but if you are looking for a deep meaningful game then perhaps you would be better off looking elsewhere.

Eragon isn't an awful game, but it's not worth your hard-earned cash, either. It's a decent rental to play over a weekend with a friend, but otherwise you'd probably be better off avoiding this one. If you're dying to play a game like this, then EA's Lord of the Rings games are very similar and far superior. And if you're a die hard Eragon fan, then go with the GBA version instead and you'll be a lot happier.

They could have made things so much better with some thought and time but I am guessing the movie release had a lot to do with the timing of the game release. Eragon for the PC is not worth getting unless you just have to. Now if I can get my Gameboy Advance version of Eragon away from my kids I think I will have better luck with that version.

Eragon isn’t an awful game. The problem is that what is there isn’t good. There’s not a lot of gameplay to keep someone playing for very long, and that’s including the secrets. The controls are mediocre, but the combat feels too simple, since only one or two moves are really needed, and the AI can just easily get kicked off edges anyway. The plot is too thin to entice anyone new to the story, and there’s just not enough there to interest anyone else.

The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers and Return of the King had a lot of things going for them. An RPG-style upgrade system; multiple, varied playable characters; fantastic graphics for their day; and one of the greatest stories ever told holding it all together. Eragon has almost none of that. The battle system is fairly shallow; the dragon riding is plagued by bad collision and controls; the presentation isn’t up to Xbox 360 standards; and the story is merely decent. Eragon follows the status quo by being yet another cog in the feature-length motion picture marketing machine.

These are the sorts of games that prey on reviewers. They seek us out, and proceed to strip away our very souls. Eragon is about as devoid of passion and energy as any project I’ve ever born witness to and the very lack of soul robs it of any chance to become something more than a quickie tie-in for a half-ass movie. Skip this title and never give it a second thought.

If you haven't seen the movie or read the book, Eragon for the Xbox does little to entice you to do so. Newcomers sitting through the stylized, yet graphically antiquated, cinematics will feel lost - or worse - entirely indifferent to the plight of Alageasia. This isn't to say the game's story won't appeal to its fan base, but Eragon's redundancy and simplicity just offers too few reason to keep playing.

Unless you're a big fan of the books, there's really not any reason that you should purchase Eragon. The game doesn't feature much in the way of plot exposition (a shame, since I'd heard very good things about the book), and the presentation is just plain awful. I mean, you know it's bad when you are simply told between levels that you've learned new abilities or gained new weapons. Nearly every aspect of Eragon is a disappointment, from its straight-outta-the-current-gen graphics to its poor in-game camera.

Eragon isn't worth the brief amount of time it takes to play through it. The gameplay and presentation aren't up to snuff and the storytelling cutscenes don't do their job at all. Games based on movies are notorious for not living up to their big screen cousins, but all of the elements for creating a good action game of this nature have been laid out in the past so there isn't any excuse. Even if you're a huge fan of the fiction, a rental is the most time you'll want to spend with this game. Even that might be pushing it.

Eragon fails at telling the story it is based on and has some of the worst options we've seen in recent history. Some of the environments are well done. The spells could use work and this is a port from the old generation. Standard fantasy game music and decent voice acting. The combat system starts off well but doesn't expand as the game progresses. It's short and you won't care to play it again.

The game is brief and can be beaten in about six hours; however, the novel can possibly be read in just a bit more solid reading time than that, and would offer a more enjoyable experience in exchange for the sacrifice of time out of your life. In the final analysis, however entertaining the movie might be, Eragon is an experience that’s better to read than it is to play.

As movie licensed games go, Eragon is about as bad as they get. The concept is there, but nothing works. It is a simple matter of the concept not being a great match for the license.

Scores of less than 50% generally indicate some sort of game-breaking technical flaw, unforgivable glitches or an Entomologist's dream serving of bugs. But in the case of Eragon, it's the simple fact that the game is absolute crap. Awful graphics, pedestrian gameplay, and about as much depth as the average puddle, Eragon lacks any sort of redeeming qualities...with the exception of just how quickly the painful ordeal is over. Only fans in dire need of the bonus materials or the most desperate and hardened of Gamerscore Whores will even be bothered trying to harvest this game's yield, but for everyone else, stay far, far away from this stinker.

Both as an action adventure game, and a licensed work, Eragon comes across as substandard in just about every way imaginable. It feels like an unfinished game that was rushed through to release in time for the movie to appear in theaters. The combat is repetitive, the presentation is dull and lifeless, and the entire game suffers from an apparent lack of effort.

Eragon is a big fat dud, plain and simple. The combat is incredibly boring and generic that the game becomes a chore to play almost right off the bat. While this isn't a bad looking or sounding game, none of that matters when playing the game makes you wish for it to be over. For a genre that's essentially based on repetition and tedium, Eragon takes it to another level and offers nothing remotely enjoyable.

That's sort of a metaphor for the game as a whole. There's nothing in Eragon that hasn't been better executed in a host of other games. And while fans of the book might forgive some of its faults, it's equally possible that they'll be even more annoyed than other gamers because Eragon failed so miserably to live up to its potential. It's a real shame, because Stormfront Studios proved with The Two Towers that they absolutely were capable of delivering what Eragon required. But as a whole, Eragon feels rushed and slapped-together as a low-budget attempt to cash in on the holiday film release and make a quick buck from the fans before word gets out that it's not worth half its retail price.

From all angles Eragon is disappointing. It doesn’t look as good as it should and deaf gamers will be completely unaware of the game’s story, which really isn’t on. That’s not to say the game has a story that’s worthwhile. Yes it’s based on a movie that’s based on a very popular book but you wouldn’t think so given how generic everything seems in the game. It just seems like you’re playing a collection of monotonous action sequences with the challenge coming from the number of enemies you face rather than their competency to put up a worthwhile fight. I daresay fans of the movie or book might find something here to kindle their interest but others would probably be better off just purchasing the book, if they haven’t already done so.

Eragon is easily one of the worst Xbox 360 games I've played in the past few months. The repetitive gameplay, ugly graphics, muddled presentation, pathetic achievements, terrible extras and extremely short campaign will send Eragon to the bargain bin in a matter of weeks. Eragon is a breeze in six to eight hours, and no part, even the final battle, really tasks any of your elite or even rudimentary gaming skills. There is little replay value—the only unlockable items are interviews with the game’s dull creators which are unlocked by finding the “secret egg” in each level. There’s a “super secret” bonus for collecting all the eggs, but I need to play that much Eragon as much as you need to go buy it.

Casting judgement on Eragon is not a difficult act. Cynicism aside (of course its purpose is to cash-in on the books/film), there is nothing in Eragon to warrant playing it, unless you're a hardcore achievement-point chaser or must have everything Eragon-related. When you consider that the 360 already has other similar titles - think Ninety-Nine Nights, Dynasty Warriors, hell, even Kameo - all of which are better games (yes, all of them!), you just don't need this. Based on the on-foot levels alone, this would be poor. But when you add in the frustration and pointlessness of the Saphira levels, it just gets worse. Lovers of the book and/or film may find slightly more to enjoy here than out-and-out gamers, but they'll probably be more disappointed given the higher expectations they'll have. Either way, it's a pretty awful attempt to successfully cross the media-divide, so hopes will have to be pinned elsewhere.
