Eternal Champions

With as detailed and out of control the Sega CD version was, and all of the rumors of a Part 3 to finish out the series (not counting the side-scrolling action spin-offs), does anyone have any ideas as to why this series never continued for the Saturn, the Dreamcast, or any of the other systems once Sega went multi-platform? Even the original games have never been re-released on any system of compilation pack.

I always saw this as a very ambitious fighter from Sega. Did it just run its course with the gore and themes, or could it just not contend with the Virtua Fighter series?
