Europa Universalis II

C'est un jeu qui saura capter l'attention de son auditoire pendant des semaines voir des mois entiers lorsque l'on pense à des scénarios comme la Grande Campagne. Il n'en reste pas moins qu'Europa Universalis 2 n'apporte pas énormément de choses par rapport à son prédécesseur. Les fanatiques investiront sans problème la somme qui leur est demandée, mais il est vrai que les joueurs occasionnels n'amortiront pas aussi facilement un tel investissement... Un choix difficile.

For those of you which have experienced the joy and excitement of Europa Universalis, there probably isn't enough here in the second version to promote a purchase. But, if you have not played either version, EU2 is a great way to introduce you to the wonderfully complex gameplay found in the Europa world. Europa Universalis II is a very complete historical real-time strategy title, even with sub-par graphics and sound. Fans of strategy games should not miss this title. Napoleon awaits.

Jag spelar för närvarande version 1.03 av EU2 och Paradox Entertainment har redan tillfört nya historiska händelser tack vare sina aktiva anslagstavlor förutom det vanliga att rätta till buggar (spark, spark Paradox). Jag ser fram mot många kvällars spel, fram till den dag då Europa Universalis 3 dimper ner i min brevlåda det vill säga!

All things considered, this fine game will get the same four and half GiN gems that the original did. If you played and enjoyed the original then you will enjoy this one even more. If you have heard of the original but never got around to playing it and feel you may enjoy a complex foray into the fascinating world of exploration, diplomacy and combat in the age of discovery, then you owe it to yourself to pick up a copy and give it a try.

Europa Universalis 2 is going through some growing pains, but if you're at all interested in history or empire-building games, you owe it to yourself to play this game.

Europa Universalis II requires more subtlety and more work to play than the first game, as events often crop up to keep you from zooming through times of peace at higher game speeds. Although the new game doesn't represent the jump in production values that some might have hoped for, the gameplay changes should give fans of the first game plenty to work with. For those who haven't played the first game, the better documentation makes this a much more accessible way to try out one of the most engaging serious strategy games of the year.

Pour ceux qui ne connaissent pas Europa Universalis, sachez que vous vous trouvez devant l'un des jeux de stratégie les plus fins qui aient été adaptés sur PC. Malheureusement, son aridité le prédestine aux hardcore colonists. Qu'apporte cette nouvelle version ? Le jeu couvre quatre-vingts années supplémentaires : dans le premier titre, on pouvait s'éclater de 1492 à 1792, désormais de 1419 à 1820. En conclusion, comme Europa Universalis n°1 était un excellent jeu, il est logique qu'une nouvelle version soit dans la même veine. L'achat de ce deuxième volet intéressera donc l'amateur de stratégie, mais le possesseur de la 1ère version ne devrait pas trouver grand-chose de nouveau pour justifier cette nouvelle dépense.

Amper een goed jaar geleden waren we hier laaiend enthousiast over de diepgang en historische basis van deze empire-builder. Nummer twee is gelukkig meer dan meer van hetzelfde - veel meer. De onverwachte 'gebeurtenissen' houden je nu ook in tijden van vrede druk bezig.

This is a terrific genre game. It is readily apparent that a lot of time and effort has been invested to exact the time frame of the program, and the game not only will teach about the history of this world, but will challenge players to stay one step ahead of it. This is one of the more challenging civ games published this past year.

En conclusion, EU2 est un wargame historique très complet, depuis sa sortie il reste vraiment LA référence en la matière. Un excellent moyen pour apprendre l’histoire en s’amusant, ou même de la ré-écrire, même s’il risque de dégoûter certaines personnes par son coté austère et sa complexité apparente. À recommander à tous les fans d’histoire, les stratèges en herbe et à tous ceux qui ne se laisseront pas décourager, sachant qu’il vous faudra nécessairement plusieurs essais avant de bien prendre en main tous les paramètres du jeu, le tutorial se révélant utile mais pas suffisant.

Europa Universalis 2 est la digne suite du premier volet. Le jeu pousse le concept encore plus loin en introduisant toujours plus de paramètres dans son gameplay qui se trouve du coup bien plus riche et complet qu'auparavant. A réserver aux frappa-dingues de stratégie, peu regardants sur l'aspect technique du soft !

Overall, the feel of the game seems right and this is a welcome addition to the Macintosh library of strategy genre games. This isn't the kind of game that can be played through in a straight multiple-hour session or picked up for 10 minutes and put down again, but something that actually gets more interesting over time, especially as the game and its diplomatic relationships evolve. There's no set path to victory and the player will have to reinvent their empire time and time again as they come across inherent stumbling blocks (such as leveling up their infrastructure to decrease inflation as well as advancing their military technology and fortifying a region's cities to prevent against invasion), which makes it frustrating at moments, but fun to come back to a bit later.

What if Sid Meier's Civilization were real-time instead of turn based? That's the question that Europa Universalis II tries to answer as it presents a game of world building and world conquest, set among the nations and cultures of the 1600s.

EU II will be most enjoyed by those who love the genre of strategy games, while the gameplay isn’t too difficult to pick up, the intricacies of the game mechanics can be daunting. Those who have played and mastered other strategy games will be able to dive in head first into the detailed rules of conquest and diplomacy. The action isn’t paced quickly, and mastering the game is more akin to an art form than a point and click interface. The game is well made, and besides the shortcomings of the multiplayer, the game has some innovations to strategy games that shouldn’t be overlooked.

Zusammenfassend lässt sich sagen, dass Europa Universalis 2 trotz schlechter Steuerung und Grafik ein gutes Strategiespiel ist, allerdings nur für hartgesottene Strategen, die den Vorgänger oder Titel wie Imperialismus mochten, Genre-Neulinge sollten um dieses Spiel einen großen Bogen machen.

Wem schon Teil 1 zu viele Texte bot, verliert jetzt erst recht den Faden. Fans des Vorgängers können allerdings zugreifen. Immerhin sorgen die inhaltlichen Detail-Änderungen für einen Hauch frischen Windes.
