Evil Dead: Hail to the King is a very entertaining game and highly recommended for fans of the movies or fans of the survival horror genre of games. Just keep in mind the system requirements so that you're not disappointed when you can't use your gamepad or juice up the resolution on your new P4 1.7GHz monster computer.

Evil Dead: Hail to the King.

Been there, seen that, done that!

Hardcore Evil Dead fans want to like Evil Dead: Hail to the King so much that like zombies, they just might suffer through this CD’s imprecise gameplay and rough-hewn graphics. They’ll be rewarded by plenty of great visual references to the films, that unfortunately range from raggedy, uninspired monster designs to cool cinematic story sequences. Also, Bruce Campbell’s now-classic one-liners (Come get some!) are a major plus. However, it’s a mystery (and a shame) why with solid survival horror games like Nightmare Creatures or the Resident Evil series out there as examples, a can’t-miss movie license like Evil Dead couldn’t have faired better. Hold out hope that better versions of this game will show.

Fans who see something they love translated into another medium - whether it's a book turned into a film or a comic turned into a TV series - always build fiercely high expectations, only to be inevitably disappointed. But Hail To The King would still be a poor game without the Evil Dead baggage. In fact, it would be downright rubbish without the little magic it has stolen from the films. There may be no raping trees, but our fond memories have been brutally violated.

One would think the developers would understand some of the play mechanics that made Resident Evil cool, considering they decided to emulate that classic game. Nothing shocks or surprises you, aside from the fact that so many horrible decisions conceived this blundering zombie of a game. Enemies regenerate constantly, even as you're picking up items from the last battle. Combat is absurd, and the lack of variety in weapons (there are guns, but almost no ammo) make it a total bore. It's not scary, funny, or even gory. This Evil Dead stinks like a rotting, disembodied hand. If you love Evil Dead and want more, I suggest checking out Peter Jackson's Bad Taste and Dead Alive (the unedited version). You'll probably completely forget about this game when you see a man liquefy a house full of zombies with a lawnmower strapped to his waist.

Trots en bitvis hyfsad atmosfär slinker Evil Dead: Hail to the King utan protester ned i facket för medelmåttiga spel, vilket inte ens Bruce Campells röst kan ändra på.

For those who missed my wonderfully insightful review of Hail to the King for PlayStation, allow me to recap but a few of the points made in last month's issue. The game lacks the pacing of the movies, and instead comes off as a weak Resident Evil emulation with Bruce Campbell voice-overs. To top it all off, Evil Dead is impossibly hard thanks to regenerating enemies and needless annoyances such as a hedge maze. The Dreamcast version has better graphics, but looser controls. Remember, shop smart; shop around for a better game than this at S-Mart.

I consider Evil Dead: Hail to the King an utter tragedy. There's so many ways this game could have gone right, I have trouble comprehending how it turned out so bad. A 4.5 is a horrible score, but if this didn't have the Evil Dead license I may have given it a negative rating. The only thing it does right is swallow your soul.

Had the battle sequences not been so maddeningly frustrating and frequent, Evil Dead: Hail to the King would at least weigh in as a decent Resident Evil clone, but they work to make the game almost unplayable. The fights even undermine the otherwise decent puzzle-solving elements, since you're required to do a lot of backtracking across areas where Deadites constantly respawn.

Nevertheless, if there's any lasting appeal in Evil Dead: Hail to The King, then I must've missed it, cause with all the things I've mentioned I can safely conclude that this is one of the worst and most unsuccessful Resident Evil clones. Many of 'Evil Dead' worshipers will want to try this game; I wouldn't recommend it however, simply because it might make you hate the Evil Dead trilogy for the rest of your life. If you're not an Evil Dead devotee, then I'd suggest you satisfy yourself with the Resident Evil games - they offer so much more, both in gameplay and graphics.

Gameplay itself is repetitive as well. Evil Dead is one of those games where you have to slowly scan across every wall pressing the "action" key to find hidden treasures since many of the items you'll find aren't represented by an icon -- most are, but some aren't. Then, when you finally do find a certain object, you usually have to run to the other side of the haunted forest through the aforementioned never-ending onslaught of undead.

True story: I had a dream a couple of nights ago that Andy asked me to write a page on this game. I woke up completely horrified. Later that day I asked him if that had actually happened. "No Kristian," he said. "It was only a bad dream." Thank God. Need I say more?

Evil Dead: Hail to the King raises a lot of questions, not the least of which is an enduring fascination with why THQ is publishing it. Irresistible source material aside, it's a little late to be jumping on the survival-horror bandwagon--especially with such a lackluster rip-off as Evil Dead: Hail to the King. If you're a fan of the movies, you'd be better off spending the same amount of money on the collector's edition of Army of Darkness on DVD instead. You'll enjoy it a lot more than playing Evil Dead: Hail to the King, which will wear out its welcome in a much shorter span than the 96-minute running time of the film.

Evil Dead: Hail to the King is terrifying for all the wrong reasons. The gameplay is repetitive while the combat is frustrating and unrewarding. The graphics are outdated and the sound is unimaginative. There are very few redeeming features in Evil Dead, which is a surprise considering the source from which it was produced. The Evil Dead film trilogy was by no means a thought-provoking experience, but it was fun and exciting none the less, traits that got lost somewhere in the conversion. For those reasons, I can’t recommend Evil Dead, not even to diehard fans of the movies. It may be early but Evil Dead: Hail to the King has likely secured a spot in our annual “Worst Games of the Year”. Now that’s scary.

In Verbindung
mit der offenbar zufallsbasierten
Kollisionsabfrage haben wir es hier mit
einem verdammt unfairen Spiel zu tun.

Fighting is nothing but button mashing, and it gets so tiresome that you'll soon try to avoid confrontation altogether. Unfortunately, the creatures regenerate constantly and love to block your path. It's especially painful when you get lost in the endless maze behind the cabin. Hail to the King fails to capture the edginess or humor of the movie, and poor control and repetitive action are like nails in the coffin.
