Evil Twin: Cyprien's Chronicles

Underbed kennt jedermann. Das Land liegt nachts unter Kinderbetten, verschwindet mit dem ersten Sonnenstrahl und taucht abends wieder auf. Böse Monster wohnen da in Sümpfen, auf Wolken oder auf Meeren aus Matsch und in Vulkankratern. Erinnern Sie sich? Evil Twin holt Sie zurück in Albträume von früher. Jemand macht das Licht aus und die Tür zu, dann beginnt die Freak-Show.

Despite the fact that Evil Twin has been in development for several years now, there has been little buzz over the title which is rather sad as it deserves plenty of attention. Fortunately, unlike many delayed titles that are still released with problems, Evil Twin is exactly the opposite. It's a highly polished, quite entertaining game that must be considered. Well done In Utero and UbiSoft.

Wie gut, dass mein Gamepad ’schwitzfest’ ist. Denn so gefordert wurde ich von einem Spiel schon lange nicht mehr. Die nicht gerade alltägliche Hintergrundstory, gepaart mit vielen abgedrehten Einfällen, gefällt auf Anhieb. Selbst American McGee’s Alice kann hier nicht viel mehr bieten. Verbesserungswürdig ist die Kameraperspektive, die nicht überall im Spiel frei um den Helden geschwenkt werden kann. Sprünge auf gut Glück gehören zur Tagesordnung und lassen Sie oft eines Ihrer Leben verlieren. Eine komfortablere Speicherfunktion hätte Evil Twin ebenfalls gut getan. So passiert es schnell, dass Sie fast eine Dreiviertelstunde spielen, bis Sie endlich den ersehnten Speicherbutton betätigen dürfen. Glücklicherweise blieb ich bis auf eine Ausnahme von Systemabstürzen verschont.

Fans van Rayman die ook de 'donkere zijde' eens willen verkennen, moeten dit gewoonweg eens proberen.

In Utero nous sert une conversion fidèle à la mouture PC, qui gagne en jouabilité et se révèle toujours aussi savoureuse en terme d'ambiance. La progression n'est pas particulièrement originale mais l'immersion est immédiate. Une bonne alternative à Jak and Daxter, même si ce dernier se révèle beaucoup plus indispensable sur ce support.

Cette version Dreamcast d'Evil Twin n'a rien à envier à son homologue sur Playstation 2. Le jeu agace parfois par sa progression fastidieuse et sa maniabilité délicate, mais le scénario est original et le gameplay reste très prenant. A essayer si vous avez apprécié le monde ténébreux d'American Mc Gee's Alice sur PC.

In Utero's graphic engine (Phoenix 3D from 4X Technolgies) allows for levels bursting with detail, varied textures that aren't reused from one world to the next, and a clever particle system that produces some of the best explosions and magical effects that I've ever seen. I can't quite put my finger on why it looks so good, maybe it's the dark burton-esque style used throughout, the hyper detailed textures (of which there's 576 Mb of uncompressed data worth), the rock steady frame rate, the special effects such as the spectacular lighting when you change to Cyprien's alter ego Super Cyprien - suffice to say Evil Twin will impress anybody.

Le jeu vidéo français se porte bien cette année. Après Darkworks (Alone In the Dark 4), c'est au tour de In Utero de nous le prouver. Evil Twin est un très bon jeu qui mérite vraiment toute votre attention (à condition toutefois de faire abstraction des soucis de maniabilité).

Am Genre vorbei: Die tolle Geschichte, die bizarren Monster und die abgedrehten Levels hätten Evil Twin zur Rayman-Konkurrenz machen können. Aber die Jump&Run-Action bietet zu wenig Innovation und wirkt mit der Zeit eher als lästiges Beiwerk, um der gelungenen Story weiter zu folgen und alle Welten kennen zu lernen. Schade, denn man merkt den Entwicklern von In Utero an, wie viel Kreativität sie in dieses Spiel gesteckt haben. Am Ende bleibt nur eine faszinierende Fantasy-Welt, die mit Standard-Gameplay und -trotz teilweise imposanter Szenen und Architektur- guter, aber keineswegs atemberaubender Grafik ausgefüllt wurde. Jump&Run-Fans sollten trotzdem zugreifen, denn obwohl Rayman eindeutig das dynamischere Gameplay bietet, erzählt Evil Twin die spannendere Story.

Jag tycker egentligen inte om plattformsspel, men Evil Twin höll mig ändå igång en hel natt. Trots problemen med kontrollerna så satt jag där, kämpandes för att komma vidare och insupa mer av stämning och spänning. Gratulationer går till In Utero som lyckats med detta, det kan inte ha varit lätt att skapa ett plattformsspel som faktiskt känns nytt.

Das Gameplay ist abwechslungsreich und intuitiv, jedoch ohne übertrieben harte Sanktionen. Du wirst mehr als 100 Charakteren begegnen, mit 60 von ihnen kannst Du interagieren. Die unterhaltsamen Filmsequenzen - ungefähr 210 - geleiten Dich durch das Spiel und unterstützen In Uteros Anstrengungen, ein authentisches Szenario für Evil Twin zu schaffen.

Cyprien kann zwar springen und hangeln, aber nicht schwimmen? Na schön. Im Wolkenlevel falle ich tausend Mal in den Tod? Gut, dann eben von vorn. Ich bin wirklich tolerant, weil ich Jump-and-runs mag. Und Evil Twin zählt zu den motivierendsten Vertretern des Genres. Doch warum bekommen diese effektverliebten Franzosen nicht einmal eine vernünftige Kamerasteuerung hin? Schade, denn ansonsten haben wir es hier mit einem sehr ausgereiften Spiel zu tun: Grafisch, akustisch und von den Ideen her ist es top.

Evil Twin: Cyprien's Chronicles är en frisk fläkt bland plattformsspel, lämplig för både Mario-fans och för de som tycker att rörmokaren är lite fånig.

What remains is a failed, yet not totally unplayable game. Cyprien is a young orphan with a superhero alter ego. Players can transform into the alter ego at any time, providing they collected sufficient icons to power it. Also present is a first-person view for your slingshot. Unfortunately none of these make the game's combat anything other than a necessity. This typifies Evil Twin's failure to unify its many parts into any sort of satisfying whole.

Décidément, en cette année 2001, le studio français indépendant In Utero ne chôme pas, puisqu'il sort déjà son troisième titre : Evil Twin Cyprien’s Chronicles. Ce jeu d’aventure/action vous place dans la peau d’un jeune garçon transporté dans un monde imaginaire, sombre et plein de surprises. Il devra rétablir l’ordre sur cette planète dévastée par une vague gigantesque et dirigée par un tyran appelé le Maître.

What makes this game all the more difficult is the completely awful camera angles. The camera can get stuck, and does not offer you the right position for jumping. Sometimes you may miss a platform because you simply cannot see it effectively. All this leads to a disappointing game. Some people were quite looking forward to this, but it's become quite disastrous with some of the worst camera angles ever seen. The controls aren't too bad, and the game lasts a while, but the poor animation, and bity dark, glooming graphics really let the game down. Maybe one to pick up cheap on ex-Rental or on the Dreamcast.

Ubi Soft should have put this PS2 dog to sleep as well. It’s boring, dreary, and characters’ penchant for swearing makes it inappropriate for the toddlers that might actually think it’s fun.
