Simply put, Excitebike 64 and Wave Race are the best racing games available for Nintendo 64. If Left Field can pull this off for Nintendo 64, I can't wait to see what it has in store for Dolphin! You're a schmuck if you don't run to your nearest retailer and snap this one up right now.
Total! (Germany)
Gaming Target
Excitebike 64 is the best racer on the N64, it even beats out Nintendo's own Wave Race 64. The controls and mechanics are astonishing. You'd be mad as a hatter not to pick this one up. So get going. You've got two games to beat.
The Video Game Critic
Excitebike 64 is a fantastic motorcross game, boasting superb graphics, realistically animated bikers, and a selection of both indoor and outdoor tracks. After a slight learning curve, you'll feel in total control of your jumps, wheelies, slides, and stunts. And best of all, there's plenty of big air to catch. Excitebike's framerate remains exceptionally smooth even in the four player split-screen mode.
Game Critics
The game isn't perfect—I would have liked even more tracks to race on as well as a few more racers—but there is no arguing the excellent gameplay. If Nintendo's future releases are this much fun, I don't see them encountering any problems with their upcoming hardware, and the Nintendo 64 can exit the stage with its head held high.
If there's one thing that Nintendo has in its corner, it's the huge collection of franchises that it can go to time and again when in need. With the Nintendo 64 needing to prove itself to the masses, Nintendo tapped Super Mario to showcase the system in the form of Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Kart 64. As things became more dire, Star Fox 64 and Legend of Zelda 64 appeared in all their 64-bit glory to quiet the naysayers. But now as the console reaches the end of its lifecycle, Nintendo seems to be tapping even more of its properties lately. Donkey Kong saw some action last year, and this year Nintendo picked its ancient racing classic that hasn't seen the light of day since the 8-bit NES console was in the talk of the town. I'm talking about Excitebike, the high-flying, 2-D, motoracing title that was a hit in the '80s, but is back in full 3D under the name Excitebike 64.
Nintendo Power Magazine
By far the best N64 motorcycle game to come out.
All told, Excitebike 64 is an excellent rebirth of the Excitebike franchise. The gameplay is arcade-like, but it is also deep and varied in that well-known Nintendo way. The visuals aren't perfect, but they are stunning nonetheless. Most importantly, the game is both fun and addicting, giving oldsters and youngsters alike a chance to revel in the glory that is Excitebike. Some will cry about the frame rate, and some will wish the game featured real riders, but even these woes are forgotten when the game itself is so scrumptious.
Gamer's Pulse
So there you have it...my look at Excitebike 64 is at an end. For the lazy people that just skipped down to the end, the game is quite good and very challenging. The graphics are pretty good, the sound is decent, and the game is technically sound.
The Next Level
With solid controls, outrageous tracks, and plenty of extras, those that possess an interest with Excitebike 64 will not be disappointed. Heck, I wasn't even enthused about the game until AFTER I played it, so maybe everyone should try it. Be sure to have an abundance of tolerance on hand though.
Da Gameboyz
Racing fans will probably find this game comparable with other N64 favourites like Wave Race, so if you were looking for something brand new, and you're tired of endless racing sims, Excitebike 64 is probably for you. And if you're a dedicated, long-time Nintendo aficionado, you'll love Excitebike 64 because it doesn't forget its roots. So, if you fit either of the above descriptions, I would suggest you pick up a copy for yourself.
All Game Guide
To put it simply, Excitebike 64 rocks. If you dug Wave Race 64 or 1080° Snowboarding, then you'll definitely dig this game. Other than the innovative turbo feature, however, Excitebike 64 doesn't quite revolutionize graphics or gameplay like those games did in their time. Nevertheless, Excitebike 64 proves that it belongs in the third generation of N64 games. It's a great game to add to your collection, especially since it has strong multi-player modes.
Super Play
I could rave on and meet the traditional reviewing quota, but I've really said all I need to distinguish EB64 from the rest of the racing pack. If not for the strength of the Nintendo 64 racing library (full of premier titles such as Diddy Kong Racing and Wave Race and sleeper hits like Stunt Racer 64), I'd proclaim this challenging, invigorating death-defying racer to be the best. But as it stands now, it's just the best motocross game I've ever played, and the only one I intend on playing, because I can't see myself having more fun with the genre as I did with this.
Excitebike 64 is a decent update but it's not perfect by any means. For all intents and purposes, this is the best bike racer on the N64. That doesn't mean it's good however... that's like saying All Star Baseball 2001 is a good baseball game simply because it's the only N64 baseball game this season. Excitebike 64 however, is a technological achievement for Left Field Studios minus a simple flaw in the crashing animation. I do wish the game were a bit more arcade-like than what it turned to be though. Hopefully we'll see more shortcuts and more "action" (along with corrections to the other problems I have outlined in this review) in what I hope to be will be an eventual title for Dolphin. This is the best motor bike title on N64 but it's still not perfect by any means. Rent it.
Consoles Plus
In fact, if Excitebike didn't have a multiplayer mode, I could leave it alone. But like every game from Nintendo that's come out in the past three years or so--with the exception of Donkey Kong and Zelda--the multiplayer action's hard to pass up. The single-player mode's good enough, don't get me wrong. You select from one of six riders, pick a track, and start slinging mud and catching air. But there's something deceptive about the one-player game, something that makes you think you're better than you are, something that makes it hard to play and even harder to get into.
