My only real beef with this game is its lack of a two-player mode, as Excitebike was made for it. Despite this, Excitebike has a distinct charm and significant replay value, unlike the majority of the NES launch titles. This is why Nintendo recently updated Excitebike for the 3DS and why the majority of retro gamers still uphold it as a rightful classic twenty-six years later.
NESNintendo Land (2003)
Have you never played excite bike? Where were you all this time? This is undoubtedly the best motorcross game for the NES. Maybe all console systems. This game had a track edit feature so the fun never stops! I've been playing this game for 10 years and it just does'nt stop being fun. This game is way ahead of it's time. The graphics, playability, track edit, and Game modes are awesome. If you havent played this game yet you are missing out bigtime.
NESThe Video Game Critic (May 14, 2000)
Excitebike's graphics and sound won't win it any awards, but its tight control and addictive gameplay are hard to resist. The side-scrolling tracks feature hills, obstacles, mud, and ramps. Crisp control allows you to accelerate, turbo, and adjust the angle of your motorbike in the air (which affects your distance and landing). You can either race against other motorbikes or go solo. Racing against other bikers is more exciting, but it's also harder because touching another racer can knock you off your bike. There's no score here - the goal is to achieve the best time so you can advance to the next track. There are only five tracks included, but you also have the option to construct your own! That's right, there's a track editor that even lets you save your work! Excitebike is a quality game, and the only thing missing is a split-screen, two-player mode. This addictive motorcross game was recently "updated" for the Nintendo 64.
Nintendo 3DSDS-x2 (2011)
Excite Bike is still a simple entertaining game which is initially free, from the eShop, to launch the 3D Classic series. It does slightly improve on the original title adding enhancements only modern day technology can offer.
Nintendo 3DSThe A.V. Club (Jun 26, 2011)
There are five courses, including a qualifying course to acclimate you to the vagaries of speed management and bike positioning. Two modes allow for either solo races or competition with AI riders. Excitebike also beat Mod Nation Racers to the racecourse-creation mode by a quarter of a century, and in this refresh, you can save up to 32 tracks. The 3-D is interesting, giving the pixel graphics a diorama-like veneer, but it isn’t exactly a wild improvement. Nintendo is already touting how cheap and easy it is to convert games in this style, but it’d be nice if they souped up these 3-D classics with a few more features…
Nintendo 3DSOMGN: Online Multiplayer Games Network (Jul 05, 2011)
In the end, 3D Classics: Excitebike is well worth the download. If you’re reading this before July 7, don't waste any more time, and go get it now -- it’s free to download! After that date, it will cost you around $6, but if you’re a fan of the NES classic, or are looking for a nice time waster on that next vacation, this is definitely worth it.
One of the earliest NES games, this is an example of a simple concept lifted to great heights via pushing the NES to its early limits with solid graphics, nice sound design, and a touch of polish.
NESRetro Game Reviews (May 29, 2015)
Excitebike is a short but challenging game that still plays extremely well today. The gameplay mechanics have real depth that were ahead of their time and the addition of a track designer make this an early classic in the NES library.
There's not much skill involved in clocking up a good timing on the two Mattel tracks, but there's always the addiction or constantly trying to be number one.
80 (UK) (Jun 09, 2007)
There may be better bike games out there now, but Excitebike's instantly appealing mini motocross mayhem still works beautifully today.
NESTotal! (Germany) (Oct, 1994)
Game Boy AdvanceGamePro (US) (Aug 05, 2004)
Tons of people used to play this game in the arcade. It was cool then, and this version is the same, only smaller and with a track designer.
NESJust Games Retro (Sep 01, 2003)
Ask a classic gamer about Excitebike, and you'll probably get a handful of fond memories. And why not? It was a launch title for the U.S. release, and the NES had some memorable launch titles (Super Mario Bros, Duck Hunt, and Tennis to name a few) that continued to remain great games, instead of being lost in the flood of newer releases. Another fine example of how simplicity can win over flashy graphics and majillion dollar production budgets, Excitebike remains just as fun today as it did when it was released.
Nintendo 3DSWiiloveit (Sep 07, 2011)
As a nice showcase of the potential these remakes offer, 3D Classics: Excitebike is a game you should feel comfortable downloading. In short, it's a fun handheld experience made better by the visual touches Nintendo has implemented. Consider this remake worth trying out.
Nintendo 3DSFamily Friendly Gaming (Oct 01, 2011)
The 3D effects in 3D Classics Excitebike seem to shift the game just a little. Bringing it to 2D just flattens it out. I am not impressed with the 3D in this game. I learned to race as quickly as possible, and avoid the other racers. The various lanes should have helped avoid the other racers but were not as helpful as one would think.
Nintendo 3DSRetro4Ever (Oct 12, 2013)
The game itself hasn’t aged that well, but as a novelty it’s fun for those 10 minutes at a time you may spend with it. The quick nature of Excitebike lends itself well to portable systems. It’s just a matter of whether you require a deeper racing experience to satisfy you. This is the best version of Excitebike you’ll find.
Nintendo 3DSGamegravy (Jun 14, 2011)
All in all, it’s nice to see Nintendo give early adaptors something for free (until July 6th, 2011) for their loyalty. It is a great way to get users onto the shop channel and it gives them something that they are familiar with but also shows off the new line of 3D classics. I’m excited by the possibility of other games that can be remade like this but I’m also hoping that they receive more than just a paint job. The price point is going to be $5.99 after the month for free and I’m just not sure it is worth the price unless you are a huge Excitebike fan.
WiiMag'64 (Sep 03, 2009)
Nintendo 3DSMag'64 (May 19, 2011)
Nintendo (UK) (Jun 13, 2011)
Right now, though, Excitebike represents a pleasing - if not essential - example of how Nintendo is planning to overhaul some of its true retro treasures.
WiiNintendo Life (Feb 17, 2007)
Here is a good example of a game which doesn’t need flashy graphics or sound to be fun. The controls work like a dream and popping wheelies over hills still makes us feel like Evel Knievel even though the game is now over 20 years old!
Nintendo 3DSNintendo Life (Jun 07, 2011)
But aside from the lack of 3DS-specific features, Excitebike's charming aesthetics and deceitfully strategic gameplay have only gotten better with age. With the 3DS's impressive horsepower, we're going to see more and more handheld titles trying to provide console experiences, but with Excitebike 3D, Nintendo assures us that the eShop will be a place where gamers can find the sort of fun, pick-up-and-play experiences that made handheld gaming such a success in the first place.
Nintendo 3DSGame Freaks 365 (Jun 15, 2011)
Nintendo’s 3D Classic line of games for the 3DS has promise. Excitebike has proven that. It is a good thing that they include it as a free download, since I really do not see paying $6 for it. If Nintendo is going to stay competitive with online downloads, they need to consider reducing their prices to something similar to the App Store. However, as a free game, there is enough here to make it worth at least a couple hours of play.
Game Boy Advance64 Power / big.N / N Games (Aug, 2004)
WiiGameSpot (Apr 02, 2007)
Many people have fond memories of Excitebike, since it was one of the original launch games for Nintendo's NES console back in 1985. Now that the game is available for the Wii's Virtual Console, it's nice to see that it's still charming and fun to play, even if the intervening years haven't been kind to the graphics and audio.
NESHonestGamers (Apr 20, 2013)
Excitebike is a fun classic to count as part of your NES library, and a good game to break out on occasion for nostalgia's sake. If you want a superior experience built around the same core mechanics, though, you're better off with something a little bit newer.
Nintendo 3DSPocket Magazine / Pockett Videogames (Jul 21, 2011)

NESThe Games Machine (UK) (Dec, 1987)
Racing games have been around in many shapes and guises for several years, and although this is very playable, it tires steadily as you play. Being so easy to play and master, it may appeal more to younger people, but we doubt whether there is much lasting appeal for hardened arcade or racing fans.
Wii UFNintendo (May 24, 2013)
Nintendo 3DSCubed3 (Jun 22, 2011)
3D Classics: Excitebike may be vaguely fun in very short play sessions, but with the advances in technology and a superior WiiWare version available, it simply feels dated. The 3D visuals are fantastic and the added save functionality is an improvement, but those alone are not enough to keep every player hooked.
NESTilt (Dec, 1987)
Game Boy AdvanceCheat Code Central (2004)
I found the gameplay to a lot of fun but not for any extended period. Not even a multi-player mode would get this game a recommendation. If you could try it out at Blockbuster you probably wouldn't even rent it because it's all too obvious the fun is finite - just like this review.
