DOSComputer and Video Games (CVG)
Certain aspects of this game aren't quite as good as Dungeon Master (I preferred DM's concoct-your-own-spell system and the constant problem of running out of light was novel), but there are other aspects which are better, namely the ability to interact more fully with the sewer's denizens and recruit new adventurers, and the fact that the equipment screen and the 3D window can both be visible simultaneously. The only thing Dungeon Master had that this doesn't was originality, but I'm prepared to let that pass if you will. Now FTL, beat this... please!

If RPG's are the thing to get your pulse racing, Eye of the Beholder will blow your mind. Grab it at the first opportunity, but be prepared to spend a l-o-o-o-o-n-g time playing!

AmigaThe One
Eye of the Beholder is an essential purchase for followers of the AD&D series, but also for people who missed FTL's games first time round and those of you that finished them and want some more.

AmigaAmiga Points of View
There have been many pretenders to the Dungeon Master throne but this is the first game that has taken the genre to a whole new level. The sheer level of detail and atmosphere is breathtaking. This is the game your Amiga was made for. It's stunning!

AmigaAmiga Format
Eye of the Beholder is an intense, taxing experience. It combines all the accepted methods of modern role-players and adds a far helping of spooky sounds, twisted puzzles and plenty of traps for the unwary.

AmigaAmiga Computing
A blatant Dungeon Master rip-off it may be, but there's no escaping the fact that Eye of the Beholder is still one hell of a game. If you only intend buying one game this month, then this got to be it. In short, Eye of the Beholder is an absolute corker.

Everything that Dungeon Master should have been. A great RPG.

AmigaAmiga Power
Not really as big a leap on from Dungeon Master as I would like, but still sufficiently different to make it an essential purchase. Intelligent and (yes, it's that word again) atmospheric, it's a wonderful piece of software and no mistake.

Beholder simply takes the idea of Dungeon Master, improves it, and adds the feel of AD&D roleplaying with its character classes and general gameplay.

AmigaAmiga Action
I wondered where SSI could advance to next when I viewed their last product, and now I know. But even though it is almost identical to Dungeon Master it hasn't quite got the same zest. The graphics are rather gaudy and it would have been better if the walls had been grey. But on the other hand the sound FX are more than adequate. With all this taken into account the game is excellent and although it doesn't knock DM from the number one spot it's certainly worth getting hold of.

DOSAbandonia
Eye of the Beholder is an all-time favourite. It's a real-time 3D dungeon romp at its best. You control a party of four adventurers that has to explore the sewers of your city and eradicate the evil that has infested them.

SEGA CDGamePro
The Sega CD version is better than the SNES version, but we're not talking pen knives and broadswords here. Aside from some cosmetic adjustments, such as reorganization of inventory slots and different placement of the compass, the two versions are basically the same, but the CD comes closer to the look and feel of the computer original.

To be frank, anyone with a Sega CD should track down a copy of this game. I got mine a K-Mart for under $5 and I have played it to death. RPG and Sega CD fans have a nice little game here that will keep them occupied for at least 20-25 hours. I enjoyed Eye of the Beholder very, very much and can't recommend it enough. If you can get past the dated graphics and sometimes stiff gameplay, you've got yourself a game!

DOSACE (Advanced Computer Entertainment)
Eye of the Beholder adds little or nothing to titles such as Dungeon Master, but it's impossible to criticise it in any other way; graphics, sound, gameplay and packaging are all fine. It should provide hours of entertainment for RPG fans, and if you get stuck you can always send off for a clue book to help you out.

SEGA CDThe Video Game Critic
Throw in a map that's basically just two dots on a huge grid and confusion is the result. That's too bad, because otherwise Eye of the Beholder is a fun, immersive experience that really does play like D&D.

SEGA CDElectronic Gaming Monthly (EGM)
A first-person RPG, with some excellent options --- like creating your characters from scratch. The combat scenes take a lot of practice to master fully (especially with enemies that are a little too quick on the attack) and moving the characters around the various areas also takes time. The graphics are good enough, but the sound could be improved.

SEGA CDVideo Games & Computer Entertainment
While Eye of the Beholder isn't perfect, it's one of the only better RPG's I've come across in a while, if only because it's so sophisticated. Having more control over the abilities of your characters - and having the application of the D&D rules - makes this much more satisfying role-playing adventure than some game featuring squat characters with big heads whose names all sound like Santa's reindeer.

DOSQuandary
Eye of the Beholder from Westwood Studios is one of my all-time favourite games. Set in one of the mythical lands of the Advanced Dungeons & Dragons realm, you and three companions are commissioned by the Lords of Waterdeep to venture forth into the dank sewers below the city to seek out and destroy whatever is causing a plague of monsters to terrorise the townsfolk above. So you and your team depart using the only entrance, which collapses behind you ... sealing your fate ...

SNESGame Players
Eye of the Beholder lacks a sense of purpose. You spend much of the game wandering around a giant dungeon maze killing enemies and picking up stuff. That's for computer nerds, not SNES role-players! An auto-map feature would have mad life easier, too, and allowing only one saved game is really inexcusable. RPG fans wait much too long between games, but this one --- while not bad --- may not be enough to satisfy the adventuring spirit of hungry gamers.

SNESElectronic Gaming Monthly (EGM)
For Dungeons & Dragons fans, this game will likely to be a dream come true. A highlight of this one is 3-D graphics, as are the variety of characters. However, if you aren't an RPG fan, it's doubtful you'll be hooked.

SNESGamePro
The SNES version is decidedly the weaker translation and that's not simply a function of the limitations of it's cartridge format. (The only obvious CD enhancements are the spoken intro, lavish game music and digitized sound.) The SNES dungeon graphics are better brighter and hotter, but they're implemented as the expense of the game's dusky realism and have a curiously squashed quality, as though the dungeon was supporting some immense weight.
