F29 Retaliator

The only drawback of this game is that the aircraft cannot be blown up, and only by crashing into the ground can they be destroyed. However, if you lose your vital systems, you are sure to be downed!

The realism of flight is extremely fluent and convincing (made all the more exciting considering the current lack of ATFs to compare it with). Then there's the graphic quality which inches the whole flight simulation field ever nearer to those multi-million pound Rediffusion full-blown flight sims. Throw in infinite depth, with a mind-blowing number of missions, four totally different warzones, masses of enemies to fight, and first class presentation at every point in the game and you have a program that is everything I could possibly have hoped for in a flight simulation. It's not a simulation, it's an experience.

Graphics are beautifully detailed, fast-moving polygons thoughtfully coloured to form realistic ground detail, the sandy beaches and shallows of the Pacific islands being particularly attractive and authentic.This and the smooth, fast 3-D effect make F-29 the best-look flight sim around. The soundtrack is a great rock piece plus some amazing sampled effects, from gunshots to the groan of the pilot during high-G turns!

A fighter-pilot with real depth. But it isn't boring - not by a long chalk. In fact it's absolutely fantastic.

Retaliator is even better than Falcon. And it's certainly bigger. Basically, you'd be a bit of a prat not to buy it - unless of course you hate flight sims, in which case what on earth are you doing reading this in the first place? Go away at once.

Retaliator ger mycket spel för pengarna. Spelet har "det" som ett "dygnsrytmkrossarspel" ska ha. Det lockar en i fällan och sedan är man fast! Jag är såld – F29 Retaliator är en höjdare!

Excellent stuff! If you've saved the world already in F-16 Combat Pilot and are looking for some new challenges then this is the one to go for. The emphasis is much more on the action side than the flying side and everything hangs together terrifically well.

Nice fast, and relatively smooth vector graphics, combined with a smart cockpit design makes this an attractive looking game. Sound effects are good, although the engine begins to sound like mum's old twin tub after a while.

Man kann ohne weiteres behaupten, daß Oceans erster Flugsimulator gleich ein Volltreffer geworden ist: Die normale Grafik ist gut, die 3D-Vektorgrafik eine Wucht - wie schon gesagt, traumhaft schnell und dabei sehr flüssig. Die vielen Missionen lassen so schnell keine Langeweile aufkommen, es gibt etliche neue Ziele, wie Kriegsschiffe und bombastische Gebäudekomplexe. Ein paar Schattenseiten dürfen aber auch nicht verschwiegen werden: Das Spiel ist bei weitem nicht so simulationsträchtig wie "Falcon" und Konsorten, der Realismus fehlt doch etwas. Genauso wie die angekündigte Musik, lediglich Effekte sind zu hören, die aber auch nicht ganz überzeugend sind. Ein Zweitlaufwerk wird übrigens unterstützt, wer keines hat, sollte am besten den kleinen Bruder zum Diskettenwechseln anstellen!

Der Flugsimulator "F-29 Retaliator" unterscheidet sich auf dem ST kaum von der Amiga-Version (Test in POWER PLAY 6/90). Nur auf ein paar Farben und den kernigen Sound müssen ST-Besitzer verzichten.

Den Militärs gehen die Geheimnisse nicht aus: Sorgte noch vor zwei Jahren Microprose mit dem "F19 Stealth Fighter" für das Fluggefühl eines Top-secret-Jets, so ist jetzt Ocean mit dem "F 29 Retaliator" dran. Diese neue Kampfflieger-Entwicklung ist ganz besonders schnell, erreicht eine Gipfelhöhe von satten 70 000 Fuß und rauscht waffenstarrender als ein ganzes Arsenal von Kriegsspielzeug durch die Lüfte.

Oceans Flugsimulatordebüt ist nun auch für PCs zu haben. Fixe VGA-3-D-Grafik und eine leicht zu lernende Steuerung bieten eher dem Neueinsteiger die nötige Kurzweil, als dem alten Simulationsveteranen. Zudem kommen einige kleine Mängel in puncto Flugverhalten und Realismus, die den Spaß etwas trüben.

Great to look at, but if you're expecting the most realistic or playable flight simulator ever, you might be disappointed.
