There simply is not enough meat to the game to keep the core gameplay interesting and with such a long game means that you'll not only be fighting hard against the constant stream of enemies but also your interest levels as well. The aforementioned areas which are lacking in polish also dampen the experience, and seem to stand out more due to the repetitive nature. The game is good, but falls short of being great or excellent. There are some good ideas here but these are shot down due to the game's shortcomings which is a shame, as a bit more imagination added to an already imaginative game could have made the whole experience a little more memorable. That said, if you're after a no-nonsense hack and slash game that's as linear as it is bloody then you would do well to give the game a look in. For lone players you'll probably want to dip in and out rather than go for a marathon session as this seems to be the best way to tackle what's thrown at you.

The lackluster execution could be partially forgiven if Fairytale Fights were an Xbox Live Arcade title. But as a full-priced retail release it feels like a missed opportunity. In fact, Castle Crashers, a title that treads much of the same ground, only much more successfully, can be purchased over XBLA for a fraction of the price. An inspired presentation, some solid dark humor, and an imaginative concept kept me playing Fairytale Fights till I sliced and diced every last cute woodland creature, but its flawed gameplay—even with the appeal of 4-player online co-op—keeps it from being much more than something I'd recommend scooping from the bargain bin a few months from now.

Fairytale Fights is not the deepest or most intriguing game that I have ever played, but that did not make it particularly a bad game either. With a nice art style, adequate sound, and simple mindless gameplay, the latter being what the game sets out to be, how can one not have fun kicking some fairytale ass, even with the camera and boss battles issues aside. In the end if one goes into Fairytale Fights with realistic expectations of what the game is, then one will no doubt enjoy what the game has to offer.

Fairytale Fights isn't a perfect game as it has already come under heavy criticism from all corners of the internet, but I absolutely enjoyed my time in this fantasy world of death, decapitation and dismemberment. For what Fairytale Fights sets out to accomplish it does so triumphantly. The big deal here is the price, and as it stands Playlogic is asking full retail value for the game, so that means Fairytale Fights is going to be the same price as something as involved as Dragon Age. The price tag on this one should really be cut (and I’m sure it will be) to recommend it for most gamers. –unless you’re a little twisted and love the thought of slicing up buckets of blood, fairytale fights might not be for you. Love it—hate it—it’s definitely and interesting entry in the game marketplace and should be checked out if you're even remotely interested.

I was actually looking forward to the title, and in some ways pleasantly surprised, but its repetitive nature and its hard-to-spot instructions certainly let the side down. If you ever see it in the bargain bin, knock yourself out, you could do a lot worse.

Fairytale Fights isn't as bad as a lot of other outlets make it out to be, but it's got plenty of flaws. I like the premise and the idea of the game, but the execution is rough. I still suggest you make time for it either this year or next when the gaming season slows down for a rental.

This game is fun while it lasts but the constant stream of deaths just makes things more frustrating than entertaining. Throw in a barrel full of glitches and the exact same levels time after time and you will probably have had enough after one playthrough. A rental only and, frankly, the much better Castle Crashers is probably a preferable option.

Full of character and colour, this game, despite being a great concept with a dose of dark humour, doesn’t quite make the ‘better than average’ ground that it perhaps should have, thanks to a myriad of problems and an unforgiveable list of glitches. Flaws aside, until it gets the patch it so desperately needs, Fairytale Fights certainly won’t have a happily ever after and that’s a real shame.

These are only my major qualms. If the above issues didn’t deliver the killing blow, a plethora of smaller misgivings laid Fairytale Fights to rest. In my playtime I saw loot continuously spawn off cliffs or disappear too quickly to pick up. Additionally, most levels boast tricky environmental hazards, such as bobbing saw blades. I met my demise several times passing by, only to find myself spawning under that very same blade. I eventually escaped thanks to a forgiving respawn, but only after a string of deaths robbed me of all my accumulated wealth. Top off the list with repetitive and uninspired boss battles, an off-kilter depth of field and a one-dimensional economy, and Fairytale Fights is offensive, just not in the way Playlogic intended.

Overall Fairytale Fights has a unique premise and quite a bit of potential. Unfortunately lackluster execution on a couple of key features detracts from the experience. The game is certainly not broken, however, a couple of questionable design decisions prevent it from being a good title. If you are someone who likes linear beat em up titles then by all means check this title out. You’ll probably get a chuckle at the over the top violence and all of the cartoon blood that you will spill throughout your adventure. There are even achievements for sliding in the blood for a certain distance or for a certain amount of time. Do yourself a favor though and rent before you buy. You might get a kick out of renting it for the weekend and inviting some friends over to go through the story with you. At the standard $60 price tag this game is overpriced and it probably won’t be long before it sees a price drop.

FairyTale Fights is a likeable game with a fun style and surprisingly dark sense of humour, but it’s let down by simplistic level design, a lack of substance and undeveloped combat. The co-op modes are sincerely welcome and the bare bones of a good hack-and-slash are here, and there are some nice physics and comical little touches going on. However, at the end o the day the gameplay is spread a little too thin to really stand out in what is quite a crowded sub-genre.

Overall, while we’re supposed to be having ceaseless fun slashing our way through a crazy wonderland, we’re continually frustrated and instead of reveling in the charming bloodshed, we’re just frowning at the screen. In other words, Playlogic falls well short of their goal, and that’s unfortunate. Something like this could’ve been a guilty pleasure for everyone and in all honesty, if they had just tightened up the control, put a bit more thought into the levels, and overhauled the combat mechanic (and get rid of the right analog), this game could’ve easily hit the mark.

Fairytale Fights is a good example of a fantastic concept poorly executed. All of the visuals and presentation seem in place, but the monotonous gameplay and boring combat really drag down the overall experience. If this was released as a straight-up downloadable game or even a budget-priced disc title I would not be as quick to dismiss it, but at $60 it is hard to recommend outside of a weekend rental. I expect the game to drop in price fairly quickly and when it does it will be a steal, until then I will have to chalk it up to another great idea fumbled at the goal line.

Fairytale Fights could have easily been a very good game. The concept, while not the most original, is still very solid. The graphics are nice, the character and level designs are quirky, and the numerous weapons should have brought something unique to the table. Instead, this decent idea got buried under glitches, a bad camera, and frustrating gameplay, and there seems to be no reason for that to have happened. With a little more time, Fairytale Fights may have been a surprise hit that kept you and your friends occupied for weeks. Even if you really want to hack and slash your way through this game, it can be completed over a weekend, and the multiplayer certainly isn’t enough of a draw to keep you going back. We’ll never know what could have been, and though the game can be entertaining at times, you’ll likely get more long-term enjoyment out of Castle Crashers instead of paying full retail price for Fairytale Fights. It’s a shame, but this game does not end happily ever after.

Fairytale Fights has some significant problems in principal areas that hinder the game from ever becoming what it was meant to be. It ultimately feels much more like an XBLA title than a full, $60 game. Unless you’re in dire need to exact revenge on the three bears on Goldilock’s behalf, I wouldn’t waste your hard-earned cash on a mess of mediocrity.

Fairytale Fights isn’t a terrible game, it’s just a repetitious one made all the more maddening thanks to huge list of missed opportunities. It would have been easier to disregard Fairytale Fights if the game was just bad, but with underdeveloped, but clearly promising ideas constantly waved in our faces, it makes the disappointment of the final product that much harder to swallow – If only the weapons had felt more varied. If only the locations and enemies weren’t so repetitive. If only the hub world was more interactive. If only. If only. If only.

Fee-fi-fo-fum! Gamers who are looking for an enjoyable cooperative experience need to look elsewhere. The chaos is fun to be a part of for the first few hours, but it becomes redundant too quick to recommend for anyone who isn’t looking for a title to play online or offline cooperatively with a family member or friend.

Fairytale Fights is simply boring. The combat mechanics do nothing interesting, the level design actually has copy-and-pasted segments and, even though there's plenty of gore, the camera is pulled back so far that you can't see much. Unless you're really hard up for some cartoon violence, then don't bother.

That more or less sums up Fairytale Fights. It's nice to look at it and is amusing for a short while, but as soon as the presentation gloss wears off you're left with a dull hack 'n' slash that makes use of an overly simplistic control system. Without the substance to go with the game's amusingly twisted appearance, Fairytale Fights never really gets past the opening chapter.

Fairytale Fights had some potential but it falls extremely short of its goal. I really wanted to enjoy this game but after putting a good eight hours into it, I was more than ready for it to come to a bloody end. There's just nothing to hold your interest over the long haul and while roaming around with some friends helps, it just isn't entertaining enough for me to recommend it to anyone, not even those who love fairy tales and platform titles.

All in all, nothing can save this game. There might be a small bunch of people who can make the best out of it, but it truly isn't a worthwhile experience, especially at its outrageous full retail price. Despite its good overall potential, large amount of long and short range weapons, and the many unbelievable promises, the linearity of the levels, lackluster storytelling, redundant and unpleasant action gameplay, unsophisticated and unpolished controls, and lack of the promised gore turned Fairytale Fights into a nightmarish yarn you should probably avoid.

If Fairytale Fights were a $5 or $10 Xbox Live Arcade title it would be easy for me to recommend the title based on the novelty of seeing Snow White and Jack (of the Beanstalk) square off in a bloody fight to the death, but as a $30 retail release it is difficult to approve. If you are looking to get an ultraviolent fairy tale fix, you would be better off to use that $30 to download Castle Crashers and buy a DVD of Shrek II.

Do I need to mention that there is multiplayer support in the game? Up to four players can join in locally or on Xbox Live to play co-op or competitively. The game is no less tedious or no more fun simply because you have company to share the misery. In fact, you should save yourself from that misery entirely and let this particular fairytale be forgotten.

As a hack-and-slash platformer, Fairytale Fights could have been a success. On top of a consistent and admittedly appealing theme, it has all the right ingredients to fit the genre: countless weapons, challenging levels and 4-player co-op. But with repetitive gameplay and unrewarding challenges, this title falls very, very short of becoming the next Castle Crashers.

There’s no doubt that Fairytale Fights comes up quite a bit shorter than I thought it would after I played it at E3. It doesn’t seem like Playlogic dug in to finish the game, which left it to work (or not work) based on its gimmicks. Sadly, those gimmicks aren’t strong enough to maintain the game across its entirety. It’s probably safe to say that few will live happily ever after on this one.

It's telling that Fairytale Fights attracted a lot of attention in the office. Grabbed by the garish colour scheme and arresting art, three or four people sat down for co-op. None of them lasted 10 minutes, and nobody came back. There are clearly some talented people at Playlogic - notably whoever did the endearing cut-scenes, which play out like Hanna-Barbera doing The Matrix. How something so colourful and quirky became so bland is a mystery of the creative process.

Fairytale Fights is built upon an interesting premise with great potential, but sprouts something far inferior to a magical beanstalk. While it can be briefly enjoyable and provide a few giggles and chuckles, it quickly becomes repetitive and boring. Cooperative play helps, but in the end, the poor controls and lack of genuinely entertaining qualities will drive most players away.

When all's said and done Fairytale Fights is the most depressing game I've played in a long time. That doesn't mean it is the worst, although its not miles off, it just means that it takes an idea so plump with potential and wastes it in such a way that it made me feel genuinely sad. In the hands of someone like Insomniac (of Ratchet and Clank fame) this could have been a cracking little game. Unfortunately, Playlogic have instead managed to craft something with oodles of style but absolutely zero substance.
40
Xbox 360Worth Playing
From interface to basic design, it's marred by numerous game design decisions that simply should not have made it to the finished product. While the look of each level is fun and distinct, the actual combat rapidly becomes tedious, repetitive and deeply frustrating due to the control problems. In many ways, Fairytale Fights is less fun to play than many 8-bit beat-'em-ups with better controls and level designs, such as the aforementioned River City Ransom. There's absolutely no excuse for this. Castle Crashers proved that the genre could be reinvented in wildly fun ways, and it was a mere XBLA title. Fairytale Fights is selling for $59.99 in some stores, rendering it both bad and ludicrously overpriced if you buy it new. It is my suggestion that you pass on this game and just play River City Ransom or Castle Crashers instead, perhaps watching some "Invader Zim" afterward. You will have an experience completely superior to anything you'd get out of Fairytale Fights.

You may imagine that this is supposed to be a kid’s game but the gore levels have earned it a 16 PEGI rating. Maybe hardcore platform fans or people who like monotonous beat ‘em up gameplay will enjoy this. I’m struggling to see a potential audience. The design is antiquated and badly implemented and the bugs should have been fixed before release. In fairytale terms this game is a poisoned apple and if it doesn’t kill you it will probably put you to sleep.

As a premise, Fairytale Fights could be awesome. In the same vein as Happy Tree Friends and even Itchy and Scratchy, this game would have maximised its potential if it was available in short bursts. It’s based on fairytales after all, not an epic quest from the mind of Tolkien. I haven’t played such a shallow title all year, as Fairytale Fights’ release as anything but a downloadable title completely boggles the mind. Even then it would fall short, and wouldn’t be worth the time of day. From an intriguing prospect to an abysmal game, Fairytale Fights has turned out more like a horror story.

Even if it were a downloadable game for a fraction of the price, Fairytale Fights would not be recommendable. The very idea of this shallow, repetitive, bloated, excruciating adventure as a full-priced retail offering is nothing short of ludicrous. Fairytale Fights has one of the very best set-ups of any game this year, yet it's marred by repetitive gameplay, annoying combat, levels that go on forever and bosses that stand out for all the wrong reasons. Not only is this game a huge disappointment, but it's also one of the least enjoyable games I've played this year!

With a nonexistent base of gameplay to build upon, every other aspect of the title (including that golden fairytale premise) is utterly wasted. I can think of no earthly reason why anyone should spend time with this game, especially with the overflowing cornucopia of high-quality titles all vying for attention this holiday season. Fairytale Fights would have been starkly disappointing as an XBLA or PSN download-only title, but as a retail game taking up shelf space, it's absolute failure.

I've strained my brain for something good to say about Fairytale Fights, but I don't have anything. It's ugly; it's slippery; all of the enemies blend together because they're all the frickin' same... it's awe-inspiringly bad, really. Not since Superman 64 have I played something this stomach-wrenching, and at least in the end that was funny-horrible. This one skips by funny-horrible and goes right back to bad. I love subjecting my friends and family to some of the worst games I've played, but this one will not be shared with anyone (and I'm the guy that enjoyed the Burger King games).
