Honest Hearts does it’s best to get your head as involved in the narrative as possible to add gravitas to the choices you make while in it. And it pretty much forces you into making those choices. It asks you to inspect your idea of God, fate, and second chances. It puts you in the role of religious dispute arbitration consultant, and expects you to make a well thought out decision that will impact these people for the rest of their lives. Or at the very least to briefly consider the possibilities long enough to have a new thought in your head about the very subject. It’s not everyday that as a videogame character you embody the proof of God’s grace, and God’s existence for a man falling short, but in the same stroke become the reason that a pillar of faith and virtue has his belief shaken to his core. For this alone it is an experience that should be mandatory.

Honest Hearts is one of the better DLC packs Bethesda has released yet, and it comes down to the combination of an interesting landscape and original story along with unique RPG choices, then layering the signature Fallout brand (at least, since Bethesda took over) of slightly off-kilter, but still intensely entertaining FPS combat on top. If you enjoyed New Vegas enough to get at least most of the way through it, then this is surely a worthy addition to your DLC library. If the next two New Vegas packs as good as Honest Hearts wound up, then we'll be in for a treat this summer.

If I had to compare Honest Hearts to any previous DLC in the Fallout 3/New Vegas universe, it would probably be Point Lookout: and that’s easily a good thing.

When considering the $10 purchase, ask yourself these questions: Do I like Fallout, but need a new place to explore? Do I want a higher level cap? Do I want to know more about the Burned Man? If the answer to any of these is “yes”, then do yourself a favor and download Honest Hearts. It doesn’t change much of the Fallout formula, which is a good thing. The narrative could be stronger and there’s a lack of variety in terms of creatures occupying the park, but these are minor complaints about an otherwise enjoyable time.

If flipping through digital pages of text doesn't float your boat though, then look elsewhere. Shallow plot aside, you're looking at four hours of getting jumped by giant animals in a dusty canyon. Hunting Yao Guai whilst under the influence provides an amusing high point, but Honest Heart's side quests provide little distraction from the main tribal trudge.

This being a Fallout game, it's no surprise that you could run into a number of bugs. These include some enemies you cannot damage or target in the Vault-Tec Assisted Targeting System because they are standing in water; corpses hovering in midair; and non-player characters running from you in fear for absolutely no reason. Don't let such typical bugs dissuade you from considering Fallout: New Vegas - Honest Hearts, however. The story and related quests don't surprise, but this add-on gives you the opportunity to once again influence those you meet and accomplish your goals as you see fit. And, you do those things in a desert environment harboring enough creatures and caves to make it worth exploring.

Even though this DLC pack as slightly shorter than Dead Money, it definitely felt more satisfying to complete. It also feels more polished than Dead Money and I definitely ran into less bugs during gameplay. I also loved that I could return to Zion after completing the DLC. With the level cap bump and interesting narrative, I’d say Honest Hearts is well worth the $10 entry fee for diehard Fallout New Vegas players. If you are just picking up the New Vegas for the first time, you should definitely look into both DLC packs when you get a chance.

'Honest Hearts' expands the Fallout universe in yet another distinct direction. Slowed down, survivalist players will have the chance to embrace the Zion National Park and its tribal squabbling. While the journey into the rocky wild of Utah lacks the cleverness of 'Dead Money' or the excitement of 'New Vegas,' it will still please fans because it simply more Fallout. 'Honest Hearts' gets are recommendation, just don't expect to be wowed.

Certain quests lack invention and the cast feels small, but otherwise another fine excuse to immerse yourself in the Fallout: New Vegas universe.

As a side story to the main event, Honest Hearts is forgettable and predictable. Where it justifies its asking price is in the takeaway benefits it supplies to the long-term wasteland wanderer. More levels, more perks, new weapons and new enemies - this is what really benefits the game, and Honest Hearts delivers more than enough to make it a worthwhile diversion for players of all levels. It would just be easier to recommend if the story wrapped around the gameplay additions was more compelling.

Honest Hearts has a wonderful setting with some fun things to do in it, but “some” just doesn’t cut it. The majority of the DLC is utterly devoid of surprises, treats or interesting characters and places, and you’ll soon start getting bored. It commits the worst sin an open-world RPG can do: it makes the player not want to explore. Stick to the Mojave: ain’t nothing here but rocks and broken dreams.

A typical Fallout download that buries a few interesting new ideas and locations beneath a patchwork of overfamiliar, and increasingly outdated, content.

I must admit to being disappointed with how straightforward and unceremonious it was to meet Joshua Graham, the near mythical ‘Burned Man’ whom Caesar covered in pitch, set ablaze and cast into the Grand Canyon for his failure at the first battle of Hoover Dam. Given his torturous back-story, I was hoping for something more impressive. This disappointment soon expands to the experience of the DLC as a whole. Although it offers new content, this quantity is not qualified by its quality. Honest Hearts delivers on the content level but is lacking in essence and a strong narrative that makes you care about how your actions affect Zion and its people. This is a far from essential purchase and is only recommended for Fallout completists.

After bringing peace (or something approximating it, anyway) to the Zion wilderness, I walked away from Fallout: New Vegas—Honest Hearts feeling like it was a missed opportunity. With more time and attention given to the writing, characters, and quests, it could have been a very special experience. As it stands, it's a forgettable detour through Averagetown that strays from the exceptional content I've come to expect from New Vegas. R

Honest Hearts was promised as a long awaited harvest, but is rather, a shrub grown from the soils of poor choices. Those who enjoy exploring may find this as a new way to sate their wanderlust, but that’s all it accounts for. Those who’ve just purchased New Vegas, and the available DLCs, should consider playing this one first for its ease in level building and the opportunity to stock up on supplies for better tackling the Mojave’s early segments. Beyond that, Zion National Park symbolizes a vestige of letdowns and not even its beautiful sights are enough to hide the shame.

Strong concept, weak execution. Add in the dated look of the game, and numerous bugs and glitches new and old, and Honest Hearts isn't worth the $10.
