There’s still plenty of exploring to be done, ED-E’s a lovely WALL-E-esque companion, and Ulysses is a cool villain with a wonderful voice. The ending’s superb (much better than both New Vegas and Fallout 3), and I never was bored or wanted to give up. It’s not the full Fallout experience, but as the ultimate final test of your skills it works very nicely. Now then… when’s Skyrim out again?

Overall play-time to complete the expansion is around 4-5 hours, which does not sound like a lot; however this needs to be matched against its price of USD 9.99, which we believe is more than fair given its quality. If you are a fan of the series then we highly recommend it as it closes the saga on a high note.

In each of the four New Vegas DLC releases, Obsidian has used the opportunity to both expand the Fallout universe and add depth to the characters within it (as well as sprinkle it with new guns and playthings). Together, they form a wonderful collection and present a superb reference point for how to expand your original title in unique ways. None of the add-ons can really be subject to the oft-repeated (and justified) claim that the material should've been included in the main game, and at seven or eight hours in length they all provide pretty fine value for money. Each one has its flaws (with linearity being Lonesome Road's biggest drawback), but overall they're a fantastic, collective achievement by Obsidian and should make the (surely) inevitable New Vegas 'Collectors Edition' a must-buy for anyone who hasn't yet sampled these expansions. The lights may be going out in Vegas, but the irradiated glow will never dim.

A solid romp through the Great Divide and some answers given from Ulysses makes this a DLC to get for Fallout: New Vegas players. Some bad bugs crept up and Ulysses can be a little bit annoying in the way he talks. The story was a little disappointing, but not too bad. A little short and a little linear for those that like to wander and want a lot to explore.

Up until this point, I've enjoyed the steady stream of Fallout: New Vegas DLC. No matter how hard I tried, however, I couldn't get behind Fallout: New Vegas: Lonesome Road. Although it provides a big piece of the overall story puzzle, it doesn't provide gameplay to back it up. After the excellent Old World Blues, I expected more from Lonesome Road. Unless you're a Fallout fan dying to have questions answered, it is best to skip Lonesome Road.

And what would the new Fallout be without the glitches and execution blunders that so frequently intrude on your travels? A tunneler might clip into the environment, following you around and attacking you from beneath the ground. (Contrary to what the creature's name might imply, this is a bug, not a feature.) A rock hovers in the sky as if dangling from an unseen thread. Invisible walls prevent you from vaulting over obstacles you should be able to clear. These returning issues become less and less forgivable as time and technology march forward. Fortunately, this adventure's key developments help overshadow them, as do some new weapons (a rocket launcher called Old Glare among them), a level cap increase, and other goodies. Nevertheless, Fallout: New Vegas - Lonesome Road doesn't fully satisfy. The confined environments make for unexceptional exploration, and the long-winded dialogue never reaches a proper climax.

After spending around seven hours with Lonesome Road one thing became clear: you won’t want to purchase it for the story. Like other downloadable content packs, you’ll gain five additional levels and some sweet weapons worth some serious cash…er bottle caps. Unfortunately, those are the only major benefits. In this case, only Fallout fans desperate for more content should embark on this oddly paced journey through the Divide.

Although it lacks the unrelenting difficulty of Dead Money and the inventiveness of Old World Blues, Lonesome Road is still superior to the lacklustre Honest Hearts. The DLC provides a few (depending on your commitment to exploration and challenge-completing) hours of gaming but nothing really significant or memorable happens until the final quest, where you confront Uylsess and learn some truth about your mutual pasts. The result of the inevitable showdown presents you with some hard choices that alter the main game fairly significantly; opening up new locations, characters and having a large impact on your reputation. Viewed and played as a single chapter in the game’s main story-arc, Lonesome Road is fairly enjoyable, but its blandness, lack of more new enemies and uninspiring quests let it down.

Fallout: New Vegas always had a bit of a melancholy tone to it, and now the journey is winding to a close, as developer Obsidian Entertainment is fulfilling their promise to release three final downloadable addons for their hit action/RPG. After the release of the Dead Money DLC, things got a bit iffy, but then they announced three new $10 adventures, each delivering a good six to ten hours of first-person shooting and RPG yumminess to close out the New Vegas legacy and end post-release support for the game. In many people's opinions, these add-ons were only getting better as we dug into some of the weirdest, most entertaining, deepest stories we've seen since the advent of paid DLC. The fourth and final one, Lonesome Road, was set to be the best yet, but at some point, something got derailed. It's hard to tell if something got broken in the early design or whether something got rushed at the end, but the result is disappointing to say the least.

As always, there are fringe benefits to buying in. If you finish Lonesome Road, ED-E will get some cool powers once you return to the Wasteland, and the five-level bump in the cap is always welcome for those who don't need a more compelling reason to fully ransack New Vegas' sandbox. Moreoever, depending on your decisions at the end, you could very well find yourself dealing with some profound consequences. Unless you're just dying to close out the Courier's tale, though, there's no real reason to shell out the full $10 for Lonesome Road right now. However important its place in the lore may be, this DLC simply doesn't play very well to the main game's strengths.

Fans angry that they need to fork out more money to see the "real" ending of the game can rest easy. The events of Lonesome Road build to a suitably apocalyptic climax, but it has none of the depth, pace or meaning of the face-off between House, Caesar and the NCR that rounded out the original storyline. Completists will want to see it through, just to say they did, but it's a shame to see such an epic atomic age narrative go out with a whimper rather than a bang.

In being anticipated as the most important DLC, Lonesome Road already collapsed under the pressure and risks submerging New Vegas in a sinkhole of the pointless. It’s nowhere being as wealthy as Dead Money, it’s more dishonest than Honest Hearts, and compared to Big MT, it’s the real Big Empty. As what is presumably the final expansion of the Mojave skirmish, Lonesome Road is paved in letdowns and enough wrong turns to falsify its promises of bringing things full circle. Consider yourself a victim of highway robbery if you elect to pay its toll.
