FATE is one of the best action role-playing games for the PC that I've played this year. The game isn't particularly innovative and doesn't really bring anything new to the genre but what it does do is deliver a solid and fun game experience for all ages.

Fate, simply put, is one of the best PC games released so far this year. It's elegantly designed, hopelessly addictive, and -- best of all -- only costs $20. So why haven't you seen in on store shelves? That's because it was developed by WildTangent, and is only available online via the company's website. Don't let the "indie" game label fool you - it's a superb game.

Fate isn’t going to glue new brain cells inside your skull, but it isn’t going to murder the ones you have. It’s a good time, it really never reaches an end, and it may be the best way to while away the lifetime between now and Diablo III.

Kudos to WildTangent for publishing a non-traditional "casual" game that not only offers tens of hours of fantasy role-playing enjoyment, but for creating a product that should appeal to both novice players and hardcore gaming enthusiasts alike.

Fate is a hack-n-slash Diablo-style game just a few lush cut-scenes and a few dozen "Stay awhile...and listen!'s" away from outright copyright infringement. This is not to say Fate is a bad game. It's not. It's chock-full of action, loaded with cool loot, packed with spells, swarming with packs of vicious monsters, and so on...just like Diablo.

It's a fully 3D action RPG that's like a combination of Diablo and its sequel, but with better graphics.

Dedicated fans of RPGs and dungeon crawlers will likely make this game a cult classic. Fate is likely to be misunderstood by the common gamer and lacks the varnish or flashy characters of a sexier, more superficial game. But like the pint-sized protagonist, it gets the job done: the random levels, monsters, and rewards means that if you live to dungeon crawl, this is a game you must play.

Fate is that rarest of things: the low-budget game done well. It’s a cheap single-player RPG, produced and distributed online by Wild Tangent in the USA, with a plot so wispy that it might as well not be there. Its basic gameplay is pure Diablo, and – unbelievably – it’s actually more one-dimensional than Blizzard’s aging hack-and-slash superstar.
