Fathom's high-resolution graphics are sharp and rendered in brilliant color. A Joust-like control scheme is used to control the bird, where the button causes your wings to flap. There are no serious flaws with Fathom, and it's one of the best-looking Atari 2600 games around.

Fathom is a strange game. Even after a couple of plays and multiple readings of the instruction manual I still wasn’t entirely sure what I was supposed to be doing. Once you figure it out, though, it’s a rewarding experience that offers system-atypical gameplay depth.
Even though this game has a whole lot of fast-paced action, the actual play quality is tremendously dull. True, there are over 150 different screens, but they are all so similar that it's hard to tell them apart. The only thing that even begins to redeem this game is the high quality of the graphics. The coastline and volcanoes are beautiful and highly realistic, as are the clouds and the blackbirds. The colors are glorious.

Overall, the title isn’t horrible to play. Play Dolphin (or just about any other game) and you’ll have more fun than playing this poorly done game.
