F.E.A.R is the most intense first-person shooter I’ve ever played. It doesn’t do it by bombarding you with ear-splitting explosions, or keeping you at the brink of death, but through sheer atmosphere, design, and pacing. Even if you aren’t a tactician when it comes to first-person shooters and prefer run-and-gun mayhem, this game will slow you down and get you into the crouch position. F.E.A.R will have you leaning around corners, taking very careful shots at only the most vulnerable spots on your enemies’ bodies. You’ll be more environmentally aware, searching frequently for objects around you that can serve as shields, looking for pillars that can be used to ricochet grenades off of. Bottom line: F.E.A.R will change the way you play FPS games and along the way it will deliver an awesome experience that will have you asking for more.

Overall, F.E.A.R. is one of best shooters I have played in several years. If you like horror and shooting, I highly recommend F.E.A.R. You will not be disappointed!

F.E.A.R. is an emotional and adrenal roller-coaster ride that every fan of the genre must experience. Those that have already played the game on PC will have to decide for themselves whether or not the addition of the instant action mode is worth a purchase in of itself, as that really is the only major change from the original. Similarly, many of the foibles from the PC version are still present, such as repetitive environments and enemy types and a somewhat short play-time for the single-player campaign. The console version also introduces the new fault of a less-than-polished lobby system. That said, these faults are incredibly minor and barely merit mention relative to the quality of product as a whole. In fact, they pale in comparison to the game’s greatest flaw: the release date. With two insanely high-profile titles on the horizon, a port of year old PC game –- even a superb one –- is likely to be overlooked this holiday season, and that’s a damn shame.

Believe it or not, F.E.A.R . was an extremely difficult game to review. Any time a review is undertaken for a game inspiring so much hype, a methodical approach is often the best.

F.E.A.R. is one of 2005’s most anticipated releases. The developer Monolith is well known for fantastic games such as the No One Lives Forever series, while F.E.A.R. is their first horror first-person shooter, which was developed only for the PC. The title of the game—besides obviously wanting to scare you—is also an acronym for ‘First Encounter Assault Recon’ task force. F.E.A.R. are a secret force that deals with paranormal phenomena. In this first-person shooter, you become the new point man (what else?) who’s tasked with stopping a military experiment that’s gone bad. Your mission is to stop an army of cloned soldiers, controlled by a psychic commander named Paxton Fettel, who used to be an army officer.

We all know F.E.A.R. right? Ever since its announcement, we knew this would easily be the scariest shooter ever (Doom 3, eat your heart out!). The many trailers showed us many unexplainable phenomenons and a young girl that can easily massacre an entire squad of soldiers. References to Ringu/The Ring and Ju-On were rife, as were the rumours about the storyline. But now, it's finally here. Prepare for the thrill of the year.

WindowsIGN
After playing the game, I understand the air of mystery, because there's plenty of surprises to be had -- and questions they can't answer because the game leaves a few loose ends, mostly intentionally. I look forward to a sequel with derelict sea vessels and voice mail passwords. I don't need new, flashy weapons or new, flashy bad guys. That would be neat, but would be better would be to further explore this story that Monolith has done such a great job of setting up. I feel like I've been waiting since Half-Life 2 for a really good, story-based shooter, and that's a lot of competitors in between there and here, for a guy in my line of work. FEAR has that immediacy, and that ambition to suck the player in with vivid immediacy and top-of-the heap production values.

I thoroughly enjoyed FEAR and I wholeheartedly recommend it to every fan of awesome video games. This one is terrific and no self-respecting PC gamer should miss the opportunity to relish in its many qualities. Just remember again that FEAR is definitely not suited for minors.

The first impression is this is a very sturdy game, well assembled and with a lot of "weight". It has all the wining features and will probably get to be the Game of the Year in the FPS genre. It's scary, mean and will haunt you even if you finish it. You will look behind more than you'd like long after finishing the game and movies with little girls won't be the same. Conclusion: buy it, play it and spread the news. This one is a landmark in gaming history.

WindowsGameSpot
F.E.A.R. is quite easily one of the most intense and atmospheric games that you'll play, and it's a spectacular blend of horror and action. You can't help but get the feeling that this is a game that's the spiritual successor to the original Half-Life, because it's so obviously inspired by that classic game. Indeed, some of the locations and enemies are highly reminiscent of those in Half-Life. This is a game that will thrill you one moment and scare you the next. F.E.A.R. features some of the greatest gunplay available in a first-person shooter, and it elevates the art of firing a gun to whole new levels. This alone makes it an incredibly intense game that must be experienced. The fact that it's also one of the creepiest games ever made is just icing on the cake.

WindowsNetjak
Ultimately, F.E.A.R. is a top quality shooter. It is visually impressive, has some of the best AI this side of the Rio Grande, and does a damned good job on weapon management. Still, the steep system requirements will put a hamper on the regular public’s enjoyment and hold off all but the most advanced PCs. F.E.A.R. would be a perfect buy at the $29.99 price point.

WindowsGamesFire

Xbox 360Gaming Age
With technology moving at leaps and bounds, you would figure a game that is a year old would be old hat by now, but I guess that was just a sign of how ahead of its time F.E.A.R. was. I would have liked to see the recently released expansion pack for the 360, but maybe that is why we have the marketplace for such things. Overall, if you like FPS titles, you like your games pretty, and you like to be scared, then F.E.A.R. is right up your alley. Proceed with caution; you will wet yourself on this ride.

All things considered, F.E.A.R. is an excellent addition to the Xbox 360 library, and it has made the transition from the PC in great form. The multiplayer aspect of the game still needs some work, and we're sure that these issues will be addressed in some form in the near future. If you're strictly looking for an action-packed multiplayer experience, you may want to wait a while for the growing pains to be overcome, and perhaps give it a rental to get a better grasp of the community and the state of the game. On the other hand, if you're interested in taking on a captivating yet downright terrifying single-player experience, F.E.A.R. comes highly recommended.

F.E.A.R. is, unquestionably, one of the best shooters of 2005. The advanced graphics and physics create a string of firefights that are amazing to watch, and creative level design and advanced AI make them equally engrossing to play. The game begins to drag a bit about halfway through, but the big finish is more than worth the effort, and the way the story turns out will likely make you want to see it all again. Add in some addictive multiplayer, and there's really just one phrase to describe F.E.A.R.: scarily good.

Right now, doing that is glorious fun. Slow motion gun battles tied to an engine that articulates carnage with the furious eloquence of a caffeinated linguist, bound together by people who've seen a lot of Asian horror, uniting to spread memorable moments over a bed of visceral excitement. Were it not for its time manipulation though, it would suffer - and certainly can't compare to Half-Life 2's timelessness on that basis. Buy it because it's a glorious novelty that won't wear off for its duration, but do expect things to move past it in the coming years. For now, it's worth celebrating because it's put the fun back into FPS punctuation.

On the hard difficulty, the single player game lasted about 15 hours. If you decide to play on normal, you are probably looking at a 10 to 12 hour experience. The difficulty can be changed at any time during the game, but that will effect achievements. As stated earlier, the multiplayer features flesh out the game and can dramatically increase the replay time of the title. I highly recommend this game to any fan of the horror genre, FPS gamers, or those looking for an engrossing story filled with action. I would like to mention that watching through the entire credits sequence at the end of the single player game will help explain the final act. For those looking for just the single player game, rent the title to knock out the quick campaign. For everyone else interested in the multiplayer and the achievements, it's worth a purchase price of around $30 to $40.

When you put all the features together, FEAR is a very fine FPS indeed. While some of the horror elements to the storyline may seem a tad cliché, the game's almost perfect fundamentals and solid extra's makes it an instant nominee for 2005 PC Game of the Year, and I can tell you now, unless we get a surprise in the next two months, I have a feeling FEAR will be receiving a vast array of industry wide acknowledgements for just that. FEAR is not indisputably the best FPS we've seen on the PC, but it is one people will remember for a long time, and if/when a FEAR 2 arrives, it will be very highly anticipated. The bottom line is, even if you're only a remotely active fan of the FPS genre, you should go out and get FEAR....and maybe a videocard upgrade on the way back.

I thought I knew about creepy games. I thought that I could stay cool through the worst that Hell could throw at me - hey, I did it Doom 3, after all. I thought nothing could intimidate me after staring down the Strider onslaught in City 17. I thought I was a stone-cold badass with the headshot and strafing skills to laugh in the face of death and come out the other side of any dark tunnel covered in blood of my enemies and grinning.

Not too far into the game, that realization is accompanied by another: F.E.A.R. brings to your mouse and keyboard the most adrenaline- and expletive-producing firefights of any FPS to date. How good is it? Good enough to stand up to a mountain of hype-fueled expectations and come out blowing us away regardless. It's so good, you'll be ready to play through it again on the next higher difficulty... before it's even over.

A game that fashions such primal fear and mixes it with an always-compulsive if a little generic shooter action can only be a positive thing for gaming. What's on offer here is sheer ingenuity in manufacturing an atmosphere that creeps right into the room you're sitting in - and that's playing it in broad daylight at three in the afternoon. If you like you shooting with a dollop of tangible fear, F.E.A.R. is for you.

Kollege Graf schaut mich erstaunt an. Besser an F.E.A.R. hingegen: das freie Speichern. Puh!

One of the first things you notice when firing up F.E.A.R. is that a lot of work went into the game’s production values, combat and technical aspects. If you’re looking for a game to show off your new PC or video card, F.E.A.R. is the game to do so. Monolith has obvious polished those areas to a level that’s arguably above any PC game before it. As such, most reviews have judged F.E.A.R. on its spectacular, cinematic firefights. After all, that’s the very reason to pick up this game. The firefights rate a 10, and one can only heap praise upon them.

F.E.A.R for those shortcomings is an excellent addition to the shelf of any shooter obsessed gamer. If you’re not into shooters but you’re looking for something to begin with, then F.E.A.R is a great entry into the crowded market and performs extremely well against the major competitors. The shortcomings don't stop this game from being one worthy of major accolades and hopefully a larger sequel.

Ob Sie F.E.A.R. kaufen sollten?

Was habe ich gestaunt.

The best way to describe FEAR would be a Half-Life, mixed with Resident Evil and a dash of Condemned. You are dealing with a clone army while trying to explain recent paranormal activity as a new member of FEAR's elite unit. There are trips where you witness paranormal activity of events that happened already, or something that is currently happening to you. FEAR is not revolutionary, but plays out extremely well.

The conclusion? F.E.A.R. should be enjoyed only on some serious hardware, because it really has something to show us at a visual level. Of course, everyone has its own taste when it comes to environment, but I sincerely do believe that only a blind man would say that the graphics stink.

F.E.A.R. 360 is a port, but an extremely good one. People can, and indeed may, argue all day about whether the PC version is superior but ultimately they're missing the point. On the Xbox 360, F.E.A.R. is a FPS that adapts well to the restrictions of the joypad and offers a compelling and brutal slice of gaming that any shooter fan will enjoy. The graphics aren't mind-blowing, and the level design is slightly repetitive, but the overall package is hard to fault. An enjoyable and painless online component is the icing on a bullet-riddled cake.

F.E.A.R. is a great game with a lot of bang (no pun intended) for your dollar. If you don't like seeing a lot of blood, then stay away from this game. The campaign isn't the longest, but there are several difficulty settings that will substantially up the challenge. The game is adrenaline filled and highly entertaining. The only drawbacks are the lack of a save anywhere feature, and the occasionally maze like environments.

Respekt Monolith.

WindowsGame Revolution
F.E.A.R. might well be the year's best single-player PC experience, but it won't win any awards for its multiplayer. Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch and Capture the Flag are the only game types, and there aren't many maps. The only interesting twist is that players can capture a power-up allowing them to use Concentration. When triggered, your allies are slowed a little and your enemies are slowed a lot, giving your side a small reflexive advantage. Also, F.E.A.R.'s online content is powered by the same diesel engine that powers the single-player game, so you're in for intense, violent fun even if most of the best multiplayer bells and whistles were left on the development room floor.

Some interesting levels -- even three or four -- and I'd go into the 90s, but the levels are amazingly dull for a game built on an engine this powerful. It's like hiring Michaelangelo to paint your garage.

PlayStation 3Play.tm
To summarise, F.E.A.R. may not be an entirely convincing next-gen romp but it still delivers where it is needed. Agreed, the graphics are somewhat dated but this is to be expected considering the game's just been tweaked and released. The main draw is the fierce, more involving shoot-outs, which given the variety of weapons and intelligence of the enemies are simply excellent. I personally found the paranormal parts a bit dull and repetitive, simply being a distraction from the main purpose of dishing out some ruthless punishment. I'm also disappointed that this game was not more chilling though, but then there is a Japanese Proverb that states 'Fear is only as deep as the mind allows'.

PlayStation 3Worth Playing
Overall, F.E.A.R. is an above-average shooter with some fright tossed into the mix. The game's campaign is fairly lengthy, so you won't barrel your way through it, but in the end, the scary moments never fully live up to expectation. And that mostly has to do with the fact that after the initial area, the frights become less and less frequent as the game progresses, and it turns more into your average FPS shooter. The later stages of the game can also become rather unbearably difficult, but if you're an FPS fan and you've already finished Resistance, F.E.A.R. is still a great alternative.

F.E.A.R. isn't perfect -- there's glitches, watered-down graphics and crappy load times -- but it's still one of the best experiences I've had on a PS3 to date. The gameplay is solid and will serve as a treat to anyone looking for an entertaining shooter with an excellent multiplayer system.

Call the clock-tampering thing a crutch; F.E.A.R.’s troopers try so hard, you almost hate not fighting fair. For instance, they work together in teams to outflank you, They search for cover and overturn objects to create it when they can’t find it. All of it is stuff we’ve seen other shooters claim credit for without really getting it right. Here, it means that someone fires wildly and falls back when he takes a flesh wound, that he relocates the second you stop looking, and that he understands that he’s got a shotgun, you’re reloading a rifle, and that it’s in his interest to get in and close the gap. And that right there is enough to put F.E.A.R. in with the few FPS titles worth tackling a second or third time to see how the same parts play out with fresh tactics.

F.E.A.R. will auf Euch schießen, sich mit Euch messen, Euch Horden um Horden seiner gerissensten Gegner entgegenstellen - F.E.A.R. will Euch Angst einjagen.

This is an outstanding Horror title from the same stable as "Condemned" though infinitely less scary. There is a constant element of FEAR as you play through this great-looking FPS which has fantastic sound with a brilliant cinematic score and even better gunfights. The story line is told through interacting with the games environment and the more you explore the more you uncover. Probably the most atmospheric First Person Shooter on the 360 delivering brilliant gunplay against truly awesome A.I. If F.E.A.R. had lived up to its advertising campaign it would have been terrifying. My wish was that it had to be played with the lights on. Instead, watch out for little girls as you crawl through air vents in abandoned factories and keep out of lifts.

Still, F.E.A.R. scares. The giggling, everywhere and nowhere at once; the naughty girl ripped right out of The Ring who crosses the ceiling and your thoughts with every creaking this or that; the fire and smoke where the walls once were--half of it's hallucinatory, and all the spookier because it happens anytime, anywhere. After that, though, recycled incidents reappear at intervals, and F.E.A.R. tires itself out with treadmill scare tactics. One bleeding wall is unnerving, two will upset the lily-livered--beyond that, it's business as usual. And yet, when you aren't spooked, when you quit wondering why what's happening is happening and you see that atmosphere here stops at "office park after-hours," F.E.A.R. is still one of the year's top single-player shooters.

F.E.A.R. is a solid first-person shooter. The gameplay is rich, the AI is decent, the multiplayer is fun, and the sound direction is remarkable. Sadly the graphics are VERY disappointing which makes this version the one not to get if you have the option. The 360 and PC versions offer a smoother experience to be sure though the PS3 isn't bad by any stretch of the imagination; it's just not as good.

Overall, F.E.A.R. is a fun and great experience for anyone who hasn't played the game before. Anyone who's tried the game on the PC or Xbox 360 will immediately notice flaws and probably retreat to the previous versions, but the game still makes a nice addition to the PS3's growing library of ported titles.

Ultimately F.E.A.R. is one of the better FPS games to appear on the Xbox 360 and it should have been highly recommended to any fan of the genre. However, it’s not a pleasant experience for deaf gamers because of the lack of subtitles and captions. Of course I’m not saying it’s impossible for deaf gamers to play the game but it would be much more difficult than it should be and you’re going to miss out on the story. Essentially this is a big disappointment because F.E.A.R. has all of the things most would desire of an immersive FPS. It has suspense, great action and a challenging AI that, had the game been subtitled, would have been one of our favourite FPS games on the Xbox 360.

It’s been a year and a half since F.E.A.R. originally hit the PC, so it’s a little hard for a second console version to really stir up excitement without some major upgrades. The truth is, the PlayStation 3 version is a downgrade in many respects. Game-starved PS3 owners should at least give it a rent, but it’s hard to recommend as a purchase when there are games like Resistance already on the market.

F.E.A.R. is a great game to play, if for nothing else, for theadvanced A.I. Instead of mindless bots that keep coming, youradversaries know how to think and move, making the game all the morechallenging. The multiplayer aspect might catch on some, but I wouldn’t imagineon a large scale. The problem with games like F.E.A.R. that have adedicated storyline, is, once you play through them, most of the timeyou have no desire to play them again. Although I can’t say enoughabout the AI, I really have no interest in playing the game again.

F.E.A.R. is a solid title on any system, but the PS3 seems to come off worst. Put simply it's not as polished as we hoped. Still, if the PS3 is your only option you're still in for quite a bit of fun.

The loading times are absolutely shocking, up to several minutes between scenes in some cases. Might this all be down to Blu-Ray? Let's just hope that's not the case... So, all in all, F.E.A.R. is a major letdown and a real pain in the neck for PS3 FPS fans hoping for the definitive version of a once top game.

When F.E.A.R. originally debuted on the PC in 2005, it delivered a kinetic and spooky first-person shooter experience, capped with memorable firefights and cutthroat artificial intelligence. That same experience transferred successfully to the Xbox 360 last year. The PlayStation 3 version of the game retains the same focus on action, but lacks the level of polish and atmosphere seen in the previous two versions.

So where does this fit with retro gaming? I'm not sure that the FEAR franchise will enter the pantheon of great modern games like HALO and Katamari. But I believe it will remain firmly in a second-tier niche of fans who will always enjoy it. But best of all, it's a cheap romp for first person shooter fans, running you less than $15 used at your local Game Stop.

This is a tough one for me - if I was scoring the game itself, ignoring platform, I would easily give it an 8 or a 9, and I do hope this review doesn't put anyone off purchasing F.E.A.R. The truth of it though, is that while F.E.A.R is undoubtedly a great game I wouldn't recommend the PS3 version. If you have a PC or 360, and have not yet played F.E.A.R, get out there and buy it. If the PS3 is the only viable option available, then yes, it is worth a punt - but only if.

No 360 game can get by without decent looks and F.E.A.R. kind of loses the plot here – it looks strictly last-gen until the bullets start to fly. At this point wonderful Havok physics kick into action, and added to its own plastered on, but top-notch visual effects, a game that looks like it could run happily on the PS2 suddenly becomes one that continuously makes you go “wow!” – at least till the novelty wears off – it’s not quite the one-trick pony that Max Payne was, but with its nightmare sequences, psychological mind terrors and general scare tactics, it comes across like some kind of hybrid of Max Payne, Deus Ex and Monolith’s very own Condemned. When you boil it all down it’s not quite as good as any of them.

PlayStation 3Bit-Tech
If you have a decent PC and you haven’t played F.E.A.R. yet, then that version is still the one to get, and it’s a disappointment that the PS3 version hasn’t exceeded or even matched it. It is not, by any yardstick, a true next-generation game. However, if you want action and entertainment – not a showcase – F.E.A.R.’s failings can be forgiven. Underneath the poor textures and rubbish console ‘exclusives’ F.E.A.R. is every bit as thrilling as it ever was, which is more than can be said for its PS3 FPS rivals.

Despite its blemishes, F.E.A.R. is still a solid single-player shooter with a lot of scares, and the online multiplayer mode is fun and reasonably lag-free. PS3 owners hungry for a post-Resistance shooter experience should at least put F.E.A.R. into their rental queue.

If you haven't played F.E.A.R. First Encounter Assault Recon on the PC or 360 there's a chance you've been looking forward to the PlayStation 3 version and expecting it to be at least as good as the 360 version. Whilst the core experience is still here, it's the worst version so far. With poorer graphics, long load times and the absence of force feedback (although it's not the fault of the game, its absence is still unfortunate), the PlayStation 3 version is definitely the less desirable console version of the game. There's been no improvement made in the support for deaf gamers and when taken in consideration with the other problems it makes the game tough to recommend which is a shame because had the game been subtitled (and maybe captioned) it would have been a game that was easy to recommend, even with the technical shortcomings it has.

So where did this game go wrong? Nowhere really, it’s just not any better than anything else out there and is an average decent shooter. Nothing less, nothing more. If you’re looking for a masterclass in frenetic blasting, majestic bullet-time and some fiendishly tough AI baddies to face off against, F.E.A.R. is unparalleled. However, is it worth paying full price for a game that sees it’s PC counterpart getting a bit extra? I fear not…

At the end of the day, the PlayStation 3 port of FEAR could've been much better. If the framerate hadn't been as jerky, we'd have a fairly enjoyable game -- nothing ground breaking, but enjoyable, nevertheless. FEAR would be a great game, altogether, if it offered a bit more open-space. Visually, the game is a joke and probably the single worst looking port I've seen on the PlayStation 3 thus far. FEAR's best attributes are its audio and gameplay presentation, both of which that create a very a tense setting. Unfortunately, neither of those two traits can save FEAR from being a mediocre game. If you have no other means of playing FEAR other than a PS3, secure the PC or Xbox 360 version instead. If you don't have a proper PC or an X360, rent the PS3 version of FEAR first.

Trouble is, you're likely to turn F.E.A.R. off long before you get to see the best of it, simply because the game's technical flaws are so many and so profound. It’s impossible to review the PS3 version without looking over at the PC and 360 editions, which are both clearly superior games. Why pay that kind of money for a PS3 game with poor controls and graphics when the same game can be had for a better price on other platforms? Unless you are one of those super-rare gamers who only owns a PS3 without a gaming PC or an Xbox 360, then the game is worth checking out just for the scare factor alone – otherwise, it’s a pass.

Yes, the PS3 version comes with bonus single-player content. No, it isn't worth the aggravation. If you have a 360 or a beefy PC, buy those (cheaper) versions of this game. If you only have a PS3, Resistance is a better shooter for the system. Although the gunplay is as solid as ever, there is nothing to recommend F.E.A.R. on this platform if you have any other choice. Each individual issue is irritating, but taken as a whole they're arguably not worth the effort. If you don't have a decent gaming PC or a 360, and you just can't face playing any more Resistance, than give F.E.A.R. a try on your PS3. But don't say we didn't warn you.
