FIFA 98: Road to World Cup

As a hard-core gamer, I do not take my approval or disapproval of games lightly. My family and friends rely on me to give them an honest and unbiased opinion of the games I play. So the bottom line is: if you love the game of soccer, you will love this game. And if you don't like soccer, or even hate it as I did, chances are that you too can be converted, as I was. I give my word that this game is not only fun, but addictive. FIFA '98 rates a 96 overall -- simply the best soccer and sports title on the market. Between this and their other great '98 editions, EA Sports has finally reclaimed their title as the gaming world's number one sports developer. FIFA 98 is plain and simply awesome and I don't see how it can get any better, other than better menus and a speedier frame rate (although, EA keeps managing to surprise me).

Wer hätte das gedacht? Electronic Arts legt die Meßlatte für Fußballspiele noch einmal höher. Das gilt nicht nur für die gesamte Präsentation, sondern vor allem für die Spielbarkeit. Die zur Verfügung stehenden Kommandos lassen kaum noch Wünsche offen und gestatten neben flotten Dribblings und mitreißenden Torraumszenen auch Flankenwechsel und einen kontrollierten Aufbau aus dem Mittelfeld. Das war bislang bei noch keinem Fußballspiel erforderlich. Die hervorragende Grafik, die detailverliebten Animationen und die erfrischende Soundkulisse können schließlich nur zu einem Ergebnis führen: Das ist Fußball!

É óbvio que perde em definição gráfica e um pouco em velocidade face ao original, saído em Dezembro, para PC. Mas isso explica-se pelo benifício da tecnologia 3Dfx que as consolas de 32-bit não dispõem.

Nach zahlreichen weniger begeisternden Betas hätte ich persönlich nicht mehr an einen Überflieger geglaubt, doch EA Sports hat es wieder einmal geschafft. FIFA 98 ist eigentlich das erste Programm, das die Bezeichnung Fußballsimulation auch wirklich verdient hat. Nicht nur die Präsentation erinnert verdammt deutlich an jene Szenen, die all-samstäglich auf bundesdeutschen Fernsehschirmen auszumachen sind. Vor allem die perfekte Spielbarkeit hebt FIFA aus der grauen Fußballmasse heraus. Hier wird nicht drauflosgebolzt, Erfolg ist nur jenen beschieden, die ihre Chancen geschickt und mit Bedacht aufbauen. Daß die Kanadier es hinbekommen haben, trotz 18 möglicher Kommandos die Steuerung nicht zu überfrachten, verdient Respekt. Wer jemals Interesse an dem Gerenne nach der weißen Lederkugel entwickelt hat, kommt an diesem Programm nicht vorbei.

Gdy dodać do tego znakomitą grywalność, można być pewnym, że kupując produkt Electronic Arts zyska się zajęcie na kilkanaście ładnych tygodni.

Det går även att plocka ut ett eget dreamteam. Det är kul att det verkligen märks skillnader när man byter spelsystem. Det finns ju skräckexempel på spel där man rent teoretiskt skulle kunna välja att ställa upp i 1-8-1, men där laget lik förbannat ställer upp enligt 4-4-2-systemet. Ska du bara önska dig ett enda fotbollsspel i julklapp, rekommenderar vi gärna detta.

Volltreffer! FIFA 98 ist ein brillantes Fußball- Feuerwerk, das fast so hoch in den Wertungshimmel steigt wie NHL 98. Nach dem für mich persönlich etwas enttäuschenden 97er Vorgänger stimmt bei der WM-Qualifikation so gut wie alles. Eine hervorragend geglückte Mischung aus eleganten Paßstafetten und adrenalinfördernden Strafraumszenen wertet auch das Spiel in der Halle auf. Die Präsentation ist, trotz fehlender Spielerportraits, absolut überragend. Manche Kameras kommen einer TV-Übertragung verflixt nahe. Viel getan wurde bei der Optik der Stadien und Kicker: Selbst die berühmte Vokuhila-Fußballermatte ist hier und da auf dem Feld anzutreffen. Die Animationen sehen nun eine ganze Liga besser aus und sind deutlich flüssiger. Durch Motion Blending verursachte, lästige Verzögerungen auf Tastenbefehle gehören endlich der Vergangenheit an.

Smooth, entertaining, and relatively high-scoring, FIFA 98 may eventually prove a little easy for hard-core footballers, but the multiplayer options (and EA's matchmaking site) will let you find one another like long-lost lovers at the Eiffel Tower. They say Paris is the city of love, and you'll most certainly love this game.

FIFA 98 para a Nintendo não é fraco, nada disso! Se tivesse saído tal como está para a PSX, seria óptimo. Estamos é todos à espera de ver mais em 64 bits.

The more that I play this game, the more that I like it. EA Sports has put together a great package with FIFA RTWC 98. Everything is top notch, from the game play and graphics, to the overall realism and atmosphere of the game. Toss in that with three levels of difficulty, you should never get too frustrated. In fact, increasing the difficulty kept me from getting bored. The amateur level was considerably easy, but the professional and World Cup levels will definitely keep you challenged for a long time. If you love soccer, you will love this game.

Fifa ´98 macht auch heute noch großen Spaß, da es eben recht arcadelastig wirkt und es prima für ein Spiel zwischendurch geeignet ist. Gerade durch den Hallenmodus und den zahllosen Mannschaften hat es auch heutigen Fußballspielen was voraus. Es ist schon schade, das EA bereits beim Nachfolger all diese einzigartigen Features wieder strich und sie bis heute nicht wiederentdeckt hat…

Soccer has never played better on the Sega Saturn than with FIFA 98. Loaded with control and play options, realistic physics and graphics, and great - if occasionally delayed - commentary, FIFA 98 is a blast as a single-player or multiplayer game. Its few flaws are easily overlooked, especially when you're in the middle of a tight head-to-head match.

Overall, FIFA '98 is a pretty decent game. For those name hungry, soccer obsessed fans out there, FIFA '98 will make a fine addition to their gaming arsenal. For the rest of us, it's still worth a look. It has some pluses and minuses over its predecessors, but that's the usual fare. EA depended too much on the name alone to sell this game, and should have used the money to make this game the best on the market.
