I love the FIFA franchise. It’s a love that goes beyond my obvious affection for the sport as an Englishman and sports fan. While the Winning Eleven game on the Xbox was magnificent I seem to always turn my attention to EA Sports soccer game. Yet in the year of the Xbox 360, this year’s edition might very well be the best soccer game you’ll play on your original Xbox. Welcome to FIFA 06, soccer fans.

Regardless of its less-than-perfect online play, FIFA 06 is a game that no soccer fan should be without. The offline gameplay is difficult to fault, the graphics (especially the stadiums and player animations) rarely fail to impress, and the game's eclectic soundtrack (which boasts no fewer than 38 tracks from all over the world) never sounds out of place. The sound of a stadium full of fans chanting in FIFA 06 is also a real treat, and it really helps set the atmosphere ahead of an important match. To quote one of the game's many musical anthems, FIFA 06 "feels just like it should."

FIFA Soccer 06 is a consistent title that improves, as a sports game should, on the year prior's title. It's still a step or two behind Winning Eleven, but it's a great starter title for people curious about soccer games. The new controls are welcome additions, although the revamped New Dribble control scheme seems like a pandering gesture to get diehard soccer fans to play EA's game. Also, for owners of both a PS2 and an Xbox, there are some hard decisions to make. Xbox Live is the way to go for online, unless you have no problem signing up for ads or charging two dollars to your credit card for what should be a free experience -ultimately, the online situation is something to strongly consider between the two; it's enough to differentiate the scores between systems. Either way, though, it's a solid game, although WE/Pro Evo's soccer fanatics might not be willing to convert quite yet.

Simply put, if you’re a fan of football (or soccer), you really can’t miss with this title. The gameplay is extremely solid, the managerial mode is surprisingly deep and the additional features make FIFA 06 a great sports addition for fans of the sport.

FIFA 2006 is absolutely positively one of the best football games ever made and shows that EA is serious about competing with Pro Evo Soccer. PES5 will likely still be just ahead but EA is catching. The winner is the consumer as each development team pushes each other to bigger and better games. We can't wait to see what the two can pull out for next gen. Until then, FIFA 2006 remains one of the premiere console games, and we can't recommend 2006 to football fans enough.

EA Sports continues to refine the FIFA franchise in an attempt to finally topple the Winning Eleven series as the number one game in soccer fans' hearts. It's come close in previous years, with last year's game doing a remarkable job of getting so close as to be a matter of taste, rather than features -- but will it follow Madden as the definitive choice for the sport?

Since 1994, not a year has gone by without EA Sports releasing at least one new FIFA soccer game. And, predictably, 2005 is no exception. The isometric pitches and teams of identical players that graced EA Sports' earliest offerings have now been replaced by stadiums and players that can be difficult to distinguish from their real-life counterparts. And although there have been some ups and downs along the way, the series' gameplay has evolved at an equally impressive rate. FIFA 06 is particularly unusual in that it ditches some of the series' recent innovations in favor of tried-and-tested gameplay mechanics. However, it also adds plenty of new features that help make it the most realistic and accessible (and best) FIFA game to date.

FIFA 06 is a decent improvement over the 2005 edition and it's instantly apparent to anybody familiar with the series. The visuals and physics will the first to grab you and the manager mode will keep you fumbling around menus for hours. It still hasn't struck the balance of intuitive play and depth of control that you get from Winning Eleven but the power of authentic players, teams and leagues still carries a lot of weight. Like many other EA Sports games, FIFA 06 does a wonderful job of capturing the culture of the sport it represents. Fans of world football will feel that from the opening video sequence.

EA's other football franchise remains popular but isn't always the choice of the most serious soccer fans. For the 06 version, the developers at EA Canada have jammed every detail of every team and player into the game, making it the most thorough, most accurate representation of FIFA football we've seen yet. Knowing Thierry Henry's birthday, however is only so much fun. The challenge set before FIFA 06 this year and every other year is how well it can appeal to soccer fans who crave the gameplay depth and control found in Konami's Winning Eleven series.

One of the things that made me a fan of the FIFA series is that it's one of the easiest sports games to get into. It's not a weak game, but you don't have to be a soccer game pro (or be the sport's biggest fan) to get the most out of the game.

Itse otteluita on hauska takoa.

Winning Eleven 7, released in early 2004, won the G4 TechTV Sports Game of the Year—quite an achievement for a soccer game. Even Europeans will concede that Winning Eleven is a magnificent football game, and EA needs to do something really special with future FIFA games if they plan to reclaim the top spot on the table.

My personal interest lies more in the actual in-game action. But for those who want to be more hands on with your team, stick with current gen. Also, truly hardcore gameplay enthusiasts may still want to get their kicks from Konami's stellar but complicated annual kick-around. but for the time being, FIFA's got my attention.

FIFA is pretty much Electronic Arts' most important release of the year. It shouldn't come as a surprise that the game makes its appearance on just about every platform (except maybe the Amiga 500 and Commodore 64). With the PlayStation 2, Xbox and GameCube versions getting critical acclaim (and the inferior Xbox 360 port only shining on the graphics side), EA's eyes turn to the handhelds, most importantly the PSP. There aren't any real changes, but did anyone really expect those?

FIFA is a name that rings many bells for the football aficionados. Some of us may even prefer playing FIFA and forget the good old physical exercise. I have to mention that this game is not an easy one. It's not arcade, it's not quite a simulator, because EA did not forget that the PSP's primary purpose is to deliver a unique experience in small doses, but it's a pretty good title.

The FIFA versus PES debate rages on. As the former gets better, so does the latter, and so the status quo remains; while FIFA 06 is probably the best game in the series so far, it's also still unable to close that gap that makes Pro Evolution Soccer 5 the more fluid, more realistic, and ultimately more enjoyable game of football, but at the same time provides enough entertainment in itself to warrant a purchase as well. That is, if you don't already own last year's version...

The FIFA series has been constantly improving itself from the moment it was conceived. This newest one is without a doubt the best that I have played from the franchise, though I hate to say that it still isn't as good as Winning Eleven. If the online play had been nailed, the experience on the PS2 could have rivaled the Xbox, but as it stands Live outclasses this version in every way. The graphics and audio presentation is top notch though and there is so much to do with this game that it can be a daunting task to undertake.

FIFA 06 adds little new to last years game, however if you're looking for a soccer game then this game will probably suit your needs, especially if you can't wait for Konami's upcoming PES5. A good game that doesn't add as much as it should have.

FIFA 06 is a very good game, but since it follows its predecessor by a little over six months it's not a huge leap forward. You get the feeling that EA should have held off on releasing the first game, instead focusing their energy on FIFA 06. If you're reasonably satisfied with FIFA Soccer you can probably hold off on this one, but if you don't own already one it or you want a more polished experience, FIFA 06 is worth a look.

And it's this, combined with smart marketing and a plethora of licenses that will no doubt win over mainstream fans in FIFA's 15th year. But for skilled gamers looking for a more realistic and deep challenge it doesn't come within cooee of Pro Evolution Soccer's godliness. A decisive run up the midfield for sure, but robbed of the ball just before the penalty box.

In effect what we have here is a flawed classic. It plays superbly, the management mode is certainly addictive in the extreme, the AI is great, the graphics detailed and crisp and there are so many modes to enjoy. So it all comes down to those stutters, which seem to affect some gamers more than others - meaning it could be a DVD Drive issue. Let's not get too bogged down on the issue of stutters though, certainly its not stopped me enjoying FIFA 06 more than any other football game I've ever played.

So damn mad I just want to get those people against the wall.

FIFA 06 is a game that reassures me that the PSP isn't entirely a dead fish in the water. We've seen a lot of PlayStation or PS2 ports on the system since launch, with dozens of sports games. FIFA 06 might not break that general mold all that much, but at least it sticks to the stereotypical PSP title description, doing it pretty darn good. Playing a season on-the-go (I did it on my N-Gage all the time) is great fun, especially with the soundtrack, commentary, and graphics of the PSP. The landscape view Juggling mini-game is a creative use of the gigantic PSP screen, possibly opening the door for future game concepts. While I'm about ready to give a yellow card to whichever publisher releases another sports game on the PSP, FIFA 06 proves its worthiness.

If you hear the word football and you automatically think World Cup instead of Super Bowl, then this is definitely the right game for you. Anyone thinking of experimenting with the world’s most popular sport may want to try before you purchase FIFA ‘06. This is not the right game for everyone, but it is the right game for many of you. Fans of previous versions will be right at home. In the meantime there’s always EA’s other soccer title FIFA Street for some faster paced arcade style action.

An option to speed up the pace of play would have been welcome, as would a break from the series' reliance on set animations for players and better defensive AI, but this game does well to recover the series from its disastrous beginning on the handheld. Expect more next year.

If you are into soccer I suggest you pick this game up. Most FIFA fans know what I am talking about. They are loyal to the brand. But, its more then just small upgrades. With every FIFA there is always something that is radically different. EA has been great to keep up with these games. There is always improvements being made and EA is always trying out new features to make the next game even better then before. It is amazing how much work goes into these games.

It will take a while to see where FIFA will be when it comes down to how it’s presented amongst the other sports titles, but EA has done a fine job with this and left itself to improve on some things, such as the lighting on players, possibly adding more modes for the gameplay freaks, and, hopefully, installing the league clubs along with the national clubs so that players can run through the English Premiere League and run through something resembling the FA Cup. If you’re looking for a soccer title at launch for the 360, this a great start for you. Hopefully, there will be a Winning Eleven title for the 360 soon for comparison, and the next great soccer rivalry will begin.

FIFA has come a long way in the last twelve years, but most of its changes take a few iterations to refine. This is again the case with FIFA 06, a solid all-around improvement over last year’s game. Still, EA should focus on really nailing the online play missing in Winning Eleven and stop embarrassing the franchise with petty control tweaks. It’s the best FIFA to date, but still only the second best player on the pitch.

Soccer has finally come to the next-generation. FIFA Soccer marks the first next-gen Soccer game from EA Sports. But as we're seeing from many games so far, the next-generation is not quite here yet. EA Sports has taken their games, and instead of just copying over their current gen games, they have been rebuilding the games from the ground up. But in doing that, they have stripped down their games and taken out key game modes and things that made their current gen games so great. I was hoping for a middle ground, but so far haven't gotten one. However, FIFA on it's base isn't all that bad an Xbox 360 game. I was just hoping for more.

Leave it to EA Sports to help introduce a new gaming system with its own brand of excellent sports titles. The Xbox 360 is here and it’s every bit as good as we imagined it would be and with its launch we’re seeing some EA Sports games that range from Madden NFL to NBA Live. Thankfully soccer fans haven’t been left out and FIFA 06: Road to FIFA World Cup is here to show off the power of Microsoft’s new console. Then again it might just disappoint those fans who think it’s the same experience as FIFA Soccer 06 for the original Xbox only with a visual upgrade.

FIFA Soccer 06 is an improvement and pretty much the FIFA for PSP soccer fans have (and should've been) waiting for. It's smoother, feels better and doesn't feel so much like a PS2 game squeezed into a PSP's body. The juggling game is a nice quick way to get in some gameplay (and drain your battery) without committing to an entire game but really isn't much more than DDR with a soccer star. It would've been nice to see some connectivity between this PSP version and the PS2 version of FIFA 06 like we saw with Madden NFL 06 for both systems. Franchise mode is a big deal to soccer fans too, so it could be something we see in the future.

We apologize in advance for not providing a more in-depth and meaningful FIFA 06 review. You see, the thing is we don't know how to do it anymore. To an untrained eye, this article might not even sound like a FIFA 06 review, but we assure you this is the (worst) best we could come up with.

So I am going to turn my sights towards the Xbox 360 version of FIFA '06. To me this version of the game seems to have taken a step back in some regards. FIFA is always going to look good. And they have improved the Dynasty mode and brought some other neat game modes in. But gameplay has always been the staple of a good Soccer game, and when playing against the computer, FIFA '06 just doesn't have it like FIFA 2005 did. The online gameplay really though saves the game from total mediocrity though. Against human opponents the game is still very fun to play. Like I said, bring on the Xbox 360!!

Welcome to NLG Sports. From the NLG Sports studios in Baltimore, MD. I'm your, Mike Mullis. The same fact remains every year. Soccer apparently will never be a major sport in the United States. Indoor, outdoor, doesn't matter. I have been to see the Baltimore Blast MILS team many times, and the arena never draws over 4,000 people. And in the outdoor MLS, how many people can name more than three teams in the entire league? That's why Soccer isn't the popular sport that it is in Europe. We are an offensive minded society, and let's face it; Soccer is not an offensive game.

It's not all bad though, as I still find myself dipping in on a daily basis for a FIFA fix which must be said can often not be satisfied due to the utter cheating savagery of online gamers. Well, maybe I'm not quite as good as I thought I was, but at least I can beat my friends. And that's probably where you'll find me. After playing through one RTWC Campaign, there really is no need to return to try again, bar unlockables and achievements, none of which I find enough to entice me back in. However, like I said, FIFA is an addictive beast, and it's one I'll continue to feed until PE5 makes its way to Xbox 360, or the official licensed game takes ?40 from my wallet. Until, online it is!

In the end, hardcore soccer fans who wanted even more realism from this series will enjoy playing around with the new controls but if you’re a player who thought FIFA 2005 wasn’t a great game might as well rent this game or stay away from it cause you won’t be missing much.

Americans, as a rule, don’t have much patience for soccer. “Too boring,” is the common complaint. “Nothing ever happens.” Since the rest of the world calls the sport “futbol,” Americans tend to compare it to American football, and the two sports couldn’t be more different. Comparing it to hockey makes a bit more sense: both sports are about controlling the ball (or puck), passing well, and setting up scoring opportunities. Goalies in both sports have huge responsibilities. And … both sports tend to be low-scoring. Strategy, rather than action, is the rule of the day.

What is also strangely fun is this new thing EA Sports is doing with its sports games while they're loading. NBA Live does a great job with this too, and I hope it marks the start of a trend that everyone picks up on. While FIFA is loading it dumps you in an indoor arena and lets you take shots on goal and fool around practicing moves that you'll never reliably manage to pull off during a real game.

In terms of out-and-out throwaway, the new Manager Mode offers little in the way of real involvement beyond having the option to play up to 15 league seasons with a team of your choice. On paper it's a nice way of adding a Player Manager feel, with the ability to either play the game (as if it were a normal player versus CPU match), watch a quickfire text commentary, or skip straight to the result. Usefully, if things are going a bit pear-shaped you can choose to jump in and take over playing the game, although - annoyingly - you can't leave the CPU to simulate the game if you've had enough. Strangely, you can't simply act as a spectator; it's either control the match directly or not.

While soccer is growing in popularity in the US, it still isn’t anywhere near the level the sport has achieved throughout Europe, Central America, Africa, the Middle East and, well… pretty much everywhere else but America. Known globally as futbol, EA Sports’ latest foray into the only futbol title that John Madden’s never slapped his name on is a solid entry for the series. The new game features tons of teams from six areas around the globe, and you can play using any of them. So how does the game stack up? Let’s strike at the details.

Before the gushing begins about how fun the next generation of FIFA is to play, it must be said that FIFA 06: Road To FIFA World Cup is a major disappointment. No, that doesn't mean this Xbox 360 launch title is not a good game, but with a scant selection of game modes and only international teams included, it begs the question: Why isn't this game better?

FIFA 06 on the current consoles appealed to me quite a lot. It was clear that the devteam put gameplay as first priority and you could feel that. The same fun but with improved graphics, what could be wrong with that?

Overall, Fifa 06 RTFWC is a surprisingly promising game marred by many striking (excuse the pun) shortcomings. The gameplay formula feels somewhat well balanced despite its simplistic approach. While Fifa is still not up there with the mighty Pro Evolution series just yet, in terms of gameplay it is a large improvement over the Fifa 06 game launched back in October. However the biggest problem this game has is the sheer lack of play time offered in its main single player mode. The fact that you can only qualify for the World Cup and not play the whole thing paves the way for EA to make a quick buck later in the year with the predictable World Cup tie-in they have already announced. While this game is definitely worth a rent or borrowing off a friend, its serious lack of substance makes it difficult to justify the £49.99 RRP price tag unless you simply cannot delay satisfying your football fix on the Xbox 360 or are intending to make full use of the online service provided.

While FIFA 06 isn't a bad game by any means, it isn't something that is accessible to everyone. I was disappointed by it because I was looking for a soccer game that could throw me into the international phoenominon and this simply isn't the one. It's still a decent game, and I found myself having trouble putting it down after I got a feel for the controls, but it's not worth your $60 unless you're looking for the high-definition graphics of the Xbox 360 or you're a soccer fan with nothing else to play.

All in all the single word to sum up the first soccer game on the Xbox 360, Fifa '06 is “blah”. It gets the job done in terms of visuals and audio, you just cannot beat that grass hands down. But the gameplay and lackluster features will drag this game through the dirt and back, unless you are a hardcore Fifa fan pick this up at the local rental store just to see the grass and take out a few Frenchman just for kicks. Wait for Fifa ‘07 to come out, I have a feeling that one will be much more featured and have the finished feeling that we have come to know from the Madden titles.

All in all FIFA 06 is much more flash than substance. While the graphics are noticeably better than the current generation, the game just isn’t fun. I just didn’t enjoy playing it. It was a fairly hard game to review. I was glad to have some friends who enjoyed soccer help me out, and the fact that they didn’t dig the game too much either made me feel more confident in my decree. I’m tired of paying for rushed, minimal next-generation games. Save some money, and get a more complete game by sticking with the current generation.

If the trend of stripped-down games continues to plague the Xbox 360, there are going to be a lot of very unhappy gamers. Even shallow gamers expect more out of their system than just pretty high-definition graphics. Gamers are looking for more of everything, including options within the game and ways to improve on what might have already been a good game. And FIFA 06 definitely needs more of everything.

AS FAR AS THE global game is concerned there are two video game series that are hotly contesting the title to best represent the sport of football or, as we like to call it around our parts, soccer. When it arrived in stores last month, the Xbox version of FIFA 06 was undoubtedly EA Sports' best soccer game to date. Now, less than two months later, FIFA 06: Road to FIFA World Cup has been released for the Xbox 360, and the Xbox version of FIFA 06 is still EA Sports' best soccer game to date. How can that be the case? At the very least, FIFA 06: Road to FIFA World Cup must be the same game that was released for the Xbox but with better graphics, right? Wrong. FIFA 06: Road to FIFA World Cup is inferior to its Xbox counterpart in just about every way imaginable, and is undoubtedly one of the most disappointing games available for Microsoft's new console at launch.

For a game that shows great promise on the field, all the extras really bring the game down. It is hard to recommend FIFA Soccer 2006 for anyone looking for a single player experience, as with the lack of options, they will likely grow tired of it quickly. Gamers looking for some great multiplayer soccer action, it doesn’t look or sound much better than this, so a pick up may be in the cards for you. No matter which profile you fit, it is certain that EA has some work to do next season if they are to attract gamers to shell out 60 dollars again.

I sound a bit like a broken record on this, but next year EA's sports games will be hitting their full stride, which I'm looking forward to already. If you're a soccer nut FIFA 06 is your only fix for the Xbox 360, but it'll probably disappoint you with a complete lack of "standard" features.

If not already obvious, FIFA 06: Road to the FIFA World Cup should be avoided to the utmost extent. The game is a waste of precious gaming time and hard earned money. Unless you're an insanely rabid fan of the sport, purchasing two soccer titles a year will seem a little crazy. With some extra time, EA pulled off a far better game in World Cup. The road getting there can hardly be considered in-depth.

In the end, FIFA 06: Road to FIFA World Cup lets the goalie out of the box by telling us the name of the game's only mode right there in the title. What it fails to mention is that there's nothing else here for FIFA, Winning Eleven, or soccer fans in general. If you don't have that luxury of getting this free with a haircut or something, you may want to adopt this game much later and for less money.

The developers of FIFA 06 have made to qualms about it: this title isn't as in depth in regard to modes as the current-gen games. With every special edition soccer game comes a certain degree of cost. Any EA soccer title, from FIFA: World Cup Soccer 2002 to last year's Euro 2004 tends to lose the elements of gameplay that give the regular editions so much replay value. This year's next-gen installment is no exception. Underneath the beautiful graphics that have left so many people transfixed is, at its core, a very simple game that, metaphorically speaking, resembles chewing gum. When you first pop it in, it's extremely flavorful and pleasant. After a while, though, it loses its flavor and becomes a grind.

When it was first announced that a FIFA game would arrive on Xbox 360 launch day it must have been welcome news for many fans of the series. Indeed had the game been a graphically superior version of FIFA 06 it would have certainly been a game to recommend. However, although it has FIFA 06 in the title the game has nothing in common with the PlayStation 2, GameCube and Xbox versions of FIFA 06. The game can actually be quite enjoyable when played as a multiplayer game but those looking for single-player football action would be better with an Xbox football title that's compatible with the Xbox 360 or waiting for the football games that are sure to appear in 2006.

Really, to describe what EA has produced here as dreadful would be to do a terrible disservice to things that merely inspire dread. It's a game that not only fails to live up to the potential inherent to the new graphics and processing hardware at its disposal, but arguably in its failure manages to raise valid questions and concerns about everybody else's attempts to wield said technical advances as tools of realism, because it exposes so expertly the potential flaws in this approach. In a sense, it's not only awful, but it's also sabotaging everybody else's efforts at the same time. As a game, it's not much better. I like football, I like football games; I find it hard to recognise this in either category.
