With game time in Fight Night 2004, you'll learn to avoid those frequent headbutts to the fists you've been encountering in other boxing games. The name's changed and so has the gameplay. Knockout Kings turns into Fight Night with more bang (literally) for the buck. PlayStation 2, Xbox The champ is back. It may have a new name, but make no mistake?after a long reign as a top contender, EA's boxer has successfully made the transition to the undisputed number-one rank in the world.

Fight Night's absorbing career mode should be the model that other boxing games follow. After creating a fully customizable brute who can be ordained with all of a boxer's necessities, including tattoos, hair color, and clothing types, the real training begins. You start at the lowest end of the totem pole (ranked 50th in the world) and work your way up to becoming number one?that is, of course, after defeating the top-ranked heavyweight, Muhammad Ali. The true delight in your path to glory is two fold. Instead of moving up a ladder with systematic predictability, you get to choose your fights in various venues against lower- or higher-ranked boxers. And, the interspersed training enables you to not only build your skill meters but also help discipline your fingers on the analog stick, developing an actual rhythm to swinging your boxer's fists.

Make no mistake about it, Fight Night 2004, is by far the best boxing game ever. Period. The new total punch control system adds an unprecedented amount of realism to the genre without sacrificing any of the fun. True, the new control scheme will take some getting used to. And some might be put off by it. However, for those of you that do stick around for it (no pun intended); you are in for a great surprise. EA has revolutionized the genre of boxing simulation and once again set a new standard for simulation games in general. Forgettable announcers aside, this game will not only draw you in, it will convince you that you are capable of taking on Holyfield mano-a-mano. All I can say is that Fernando Vargas better be happy he is not in this year’s game, because I (with the help of the amazing create a player option) would finally have been able to take my name back.

A sublime evolution of a serious sports simulation that doesn't make life easy to start with but rewards you with depth, blood and belts.

Boxing games have long been a staple of videogame consoles. From the aptly named “Boxing” for the Intellivision to EA’s earlier attempts at boxing with Knockout Kings, there has rarely been a console that didn’t feature at least a couple of boxing titles. Throughout the history of videogames, there has been several boxing games that were fun to play, and in the case of “Punch Out,” went on to legendary status.

In the end, Fight Night 2004 isn't without its flaws, but that doesn't stop it from being the most complete boxing game ever created. Everything the game offers--in terms of gameplay and presentation--all comes together to deliver one cohesive boxing experience that finally cracks the code and stands as a boxing simulation with the level of control and the fast-moving gameplay that makes it as fun to play as any arcade-styled boxing game before it. This is one title that just about every boxing fan should own, and it's one that even fighting game fans might enjoy, since it's deeply rooted in skill-based gameplay that tests your defensive and offensive abilities equally.

Once you get used to the unusual controls and get an appreciation for the strategy and authenticity they offer, you will have some good fun with Fight Night. Playing with your friends can be great fun, especially when you choose to fight with the famous boxers, as many have a distinctive style that needs to be accounted for. The game is well-balanced and allows for a number of effective styles based on tactics, movement and combinations, which is a key achievement for this kind of game. Because it is a little short on content, it is likely to be relegated to exclusively 2-player use sooner rather than later, but that shouldn't stop you for picking it up and giving it the attention it deserves.

Fight Night 2004 offers the most realistic control, gameplay, and graphics ever seen in a boxing game. Over the years, the boxing genre has been trying to get more and more realistic, but most attempts to date have fallen flat in one category or another. Electronic Arts has made several good attempts with its Knockout Kings series, but even here some aspects of the games weren't as real as they could have been--and perhaps should have been. This year, EA Sports did to its boxing game what it did last year to its baseball games--it started over. The end result is Fight Night 2004, an all-new game with an all-new name. And much how MVP Baseball made improvements to EA's then-stagnant baseball series, Fight Night 2004 reinvigorates the boxing genre. It also offers the most realistic control, gameplay, and graphics that the genre has ever seen.

In this day and age of updated rosters and annual feature padding, true innovation in sports titles is about as common as a scoreless game of NFL Blitz on easy mode. And while a select few pieces of software actually do manage to break through with some interesting ideas (MLB 2005's use of the EyeToy; MVP Baseball's pitching technique), a truly evolutionary step towards changing the face of an entire genre hasn't been made for quite some time. Though some may argue that NBA Live 2003's freestyle ball control was the last big step towards transforming the game of basketball, that inclusion was really nothing more than a much needed enhancement to a pre-established form of hoops. If Live 2003 had truly innovated, it would have marked the beginning of a whole new industry-wide approach towards designing basketball games. But as it stands now, it was simply the first to standardize non-passing functions with the analog stick while ball moving handling away from the face buttons.

Fight Night 2004 is the best boxing game out to date. If you like or love the sport you'll fit into the Fight Night mode like a glove. The future is bright for EA's newest competitor.

You can see what the big deal is with Fight Night 2004 straight from the opening bell. You don't even need to be holding the controller, actually, it's so obvious. If boxing games up to now (such as EA's own Knockout Kings series) were all about sweaty guys jabbing each other in the face until one side runs out of energy, then this one is about boxing as it really works: the give-and-take, the strategic brutality, the subtle movements that mark the difference between victory and defeat. It's one of the first games to examine boxing as a sport, rather than a brawl, and for that it deserves some sort of gold star for extra effort, at the very least.

I didn’t expect it, but Fight Night 2004 has become a real jewel. EA proves they can also make intelligent Fighters. And above that, everything is mixed with this special EA flavour when it comes to atmosphere. The graphics and music just fit together, and it’s always nice to see your opponent looking like a big loser. Conclusion: go play this game and be as surprised as I was. A new world will open for you: a world where fighting isn’t just aggression. There will be aggression of course, but think of it as a game of chess with gloves and shorts.

Whenever you think of sports genres that are fairly devoid of regular entries, the sport of Boxing comes to mind. And you know, it's probably for good reason. The luster and pagentry of Boxing has pretty much gone into the toilet. Staying in on Friday night to watch HBO or Showtime Boxing made way to paying $40-50 for a night that rarely gave you your money's worth made it hard for people to stay interested in prize fighting. Top that off with the unfortunate tarnishing of the sport with the personal and in-ring problems of guys like Mike Tyson, and the sport has been spiraling downward ever since. People just don't think of Boxing the way it used to be.

Boxing games have always been a tricky proposition. In trying to blend the realism of the sweet science with entertaining arcade gameplay, developers have mostly created watered-down fighters. EA Sports' Fight Night rises above the rest; it's incredibly diverse control system is implemented into a truly enjoyable game that has enough simulation elements to please boxing fans and strong gameplay that can be appreciated by a diverse crowd.

Usually when a boxer loses a high profile match, he claims not that he was beaten by a superior fighter, but rather that there was a flaw in his preparation or that the guy landed a few lucky punches. It’s all about saving face, even if that face looks like a giant swollen blueberry after a two-hour meeting with a leather glove.

You can't mention a boxing video game without referring to its roots. The game I'm referring to is Mike Tyson's Punchout (or simply Punchout if you got on the boat a little late) for the old NES. Since then there have been many boxing games, but none were able to capture the imagination of a whole era of gamers while bringing a dying sport to the forefront for one last hurrah.

It was obvious that the Knockout Kings series had run its course. EA had to draw a line under the title to totally reinvent it for a determined return to the ring, fighting fit and ready claim the crown back from Rage, which unexpectedly landed a killer blow to the chops with Rocky just before the Britsoft publisher's inevitable demise.
