Chamonix Challenge is very pretty to look at and extremely difficult to play. The ST graphics are the better by a margin, largely because of more detail.

Amstrad CPCThe Games Machine (UK)
First reactions to Chamonix Challenge may well be of frustration and perhaps even boredom but perseverance is the name of the game and once all the idiosyncrasies are mastered that little blue sprite will be climbing, sliding and falling to his doom with the best of them.

Make no mistake, this is no arcade or adventure game, but a richly graphical, creatively conceived and implemented climbing simulation that will appeal to anyone interested in the sport, buy may prove less than stimulating to the purist arcader.

The rockface is the most frustrating part of the game. To succeed you must find good foot and hand holds. This part of the game I found disappointing because of the perseverance needed to succeed: Patience is not just a virtue in Chamonix Challenge - it's a necessity.

The presentation is impressive: the options are virtually identical to the ST, and there's a similar neatly animated climber's face registering dismay when a crisis crops up. Setting aside the quibbles, perseverance does dampen the initial tedium, and when you've got the grown acclimatised to the troublesome control-method, there is a great deal of satisfaction to be gained from conquering a peak.

Still, if you don't mind your action at a slow pace and find the idea of mixing a bit of strategy with some careful preparation appealing, Final Assault is the man for the job. It's a rewarding experience - provided you've got the patience and determination to succeed.

Final Assault isn't rubbish. In fact it's quite fun. It's nice to know that there is still some originality left in the market. The only problem is, it's far too easy. On my first go I played at intermediate level and finished it without any problems. With that problem in mind I have to give Final Assault the thumbs down.

The gameplay has been improved but it still won't get you very excited. You'll soon be looking for new mountains to try.

Atari STACE (Advanced Computer Entertainment)
You have to prepare your climber properly before you start the ascent however as he could freeze to death, go snowblind or catch sunburn. Chamonix Challenge has a novel scenario and some colourful and well animated graphics but it has poor gameplay and unless you're a real fan of the sport you could well find the fun wearing off quickly.
