What all this means is that The Crystal Bearers is proof that making a fantastic game takes more than horsepower and plot twists. It takes a keen eye, a solid artistic vision and a desire to simply let people have fun and enjoy themselves. And cows that shoot milk beams from their udders. Naturally.

It may not be the huge, serious undertaking we’ve generally come to expect from most Square games, but Crystal Bearers is still an entertaining and worthwhile investment (it’s also one of the prettiest Wii games yet), particularly for the more casual FF fan. Save it for a rainy afternoon when you don’t have much to do. At least it shows that FF XII wasn’t just a fluke, and that the man responsible for the SaGa series is not in fact completely out of his mind.

One of the most refreshing and innovative Square Enix games in many years. While it doesn't do everything perfect, its attempts at branching out are admirable. Its cast of characters and lighter tone help make this game stand out from the rest of the pack and its experimental nature encourage replayability. A great addition to the Wii library.

Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: The Crystal Bearers is not a bad game, but it’s not a great game either. In a lot of ways it suffers from the high expectations that come with a Final Fantasy game. The graphics and sound are top notch for the Wii. The storyline is fun and remains interesting. However, the gameplay is so basic and repetitious that most gamers may not be able to look past it. If you can forgive the game’s one true short coming then you will find a pretty enjoyable action game, even if it only clocks in at about 12 hours.

There are a lot of unique concepts in The Crystal Bearers, but their flawed execution puts a damper on the experience. Combat aside, it's got a few redeeming qualities, namely, a strong story, and some genuinely fun sequences. If you're expecting the traditional Square Enix offering of magic, leveling, and gear management, you'll be put off by the radical departure. Otherwise, it's a more accessible experience that's suited to a broader audience.

Worth Playing
However, if you can look beyond your expectations, you'll find a surprisingly fun casual game. The Wii-based minigames are reasonably well-designed, and few provide a barrier to your progression. You're more likely to get frustratingly lost due to the poor map system than stuck in a battle or minigame. The Crystal Bearers is basically a big sandbox in which you have fun, wander around and interact with the world, and there's very little risk in anything you do. It's great if you want something casual and relaxed without the completely unfocused quality of a Wii Sports title, but anyone who's looking for a deep RPG experience or action game is going to be deeply disappointed. If you want a simple and relaxing trip into the Final Fantasy universe, you'll find a lot to like in The Crystal Bearers, but hardcore RPG fans should keep waiting for Final Fantasy XIII.

As the Crystal Chronicles spin-off series grows, I am starting to get the impression that Square Enix is using the series as a testing ground for features that may be implemented in future games. They experimented with multiplayer in the first game, console cross-compatibility in Echoes of Time, and with Crystal Bearers, a single character story and a focus on exploration rather than combat. While the story portion of the game works very well, the shift to an action-adventure style of gameplay rather than traditional RPG feels a little weird. It wouldn't be so bad if the combat was at least more satisfying than just waving the Wii-mote around to push things into one another. As it is, The Crystal Bearers has a lot of things going for it - it's just too bad the combat isn't one of them.

Square had an obvious goal in mind when it came to Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Crystal Bearers, and the game suffers from a number of issues that can be chalked up more to poor execution than poor planning. The combat is great... in theory, it just struggles due to a poor camera and uninteresting battles. Other problems with the game feel the same way, always outreaching their abilities as a studio when it comes to the genre. Even so, there's some fun to be had with this charming title, it's just not the game it should have been, nor the game it had to be in order to prove that the Crystal Chronicles series is more than a younger brother of Final Fantasy. It's a fun game, an interesting game, it's just not an incredible game, and with the amount of good games on the market, there might not be time to be a crystal bearer. Not now, at least.

Underneath its myriad of flaws there's something endearing about Crystal Bearers. I fell in love with the game world, enjoyed the company of the characters, and lost hours to the distractions the game had to offer. Just don't fall into the trap of comparing Crystal Bearers to other Final Fantasy titles; you'll only be disappointed. Take it as it is, and you'll enjoy a side of Square-Enix that hasn't been seen before.

Don't buy this expecting an epic RPG, and consider keeping someone under the age of 12 at hand to help you justify the twee nature of the game as a whole. But there's something here which is notably absent in any number of lushly produced and scintillatingly scripted games: a real sense of fun and discovery.

Digital Chumps
It features almost no role-playing elements and focuses much more heavily instead on exploration and adventure. It doesn’t even really fit with the Crystal Chronicles template, either, as it’s almost entirely centered on single-player adventuring (though a second player can control another cursor throughout most of the game). It’s also quite alarmingly short at just around 12-14 hours long. But all of these divergences don’t necessarily make it bad. The presentation is on par with anything you might expect from the series, and the story is at least pretty interesting. The biggest drawbacks overall are really the truncated length, finicky camera, and wearing telekinesis battle mechanics. Beyond those hang-ups, it’s entirely different from anything we’ve seen to date in the series, but some people may appreciate the momentary departure. Wii owners, at least give this one the courtesy of a rental.

NintendoWorldReport
This isn't the Final Fantasy title that RPG-starved Wii owners are looking for, but Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: The Crystal Bearers is still a good game in its own right. However, it's likely very different from what most players will probably expect. It's a fun adventure game with an interesting Wii-specific gameplay mechanic that is regrettably hampered by a bad camera and a lack of a decent map. If you're looking for an entertaining ride through the Crystal Chronicles world this is the game for you, but if you're looking for an RPG, look elsewhere.

Game Over Online
Crystal Bearers is a fun game for the short time that it lasts. Though I was very excited about the game, the camera and pacing issues detract from the game’s overall appeal with little to no replay value. It’s worth a rental for fans of the series but those new to the Crystal Chronicles series would feel more satisfied playing the Gamecube original and earlier DS instalments.

Games Radar
The one thing that will ruin Crystal Bearers for you is if you can’t take the waggle. The game isn’t asking you to throw your rotator cuff out to complete it – but the temptation to grab-and-fling everything that isn’t nailed down is pretty strong. So maybe you should invest in some Icy Hot if you think you can’t resist.

Overall, Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: The Crystal Bearers can bear the weight of its name but only just, story wise it is a true Final Fantasy tale and there are some great and exciting moments, but certain design choices really let this game down.

Crystal Bearers is a game in desperate need of more variety. After putting in a couple of hours most gamers will be seasoned veterans of the game’s mechanics and start to grow tired of them. Taking into consideration the interesting setting, solid story, and beautiful graphics only makes the situation that much sadder because it serves as a reminder of how good this game could have been. Perhaps Crystal Bearers would have been better served it was a more traditional Final Fantasy experience where the fascinating world could have been more thoroughly explored with more tested gameplay mechanics. What could have been cannot change the final product now on store shelves, a game with one good idea that is never built upon and ultimately becomes boring.

GameFocus
Without a doubt, this is one of the most disappointing Final Fantasy games in a long time. A competent story is completely ruined by persistent camera issues, weak combat and poor objectives. You can clearly see the potential it had to be a great game, it just would have been better served by a bit more time in development.

Meristation

Gamer Limit
All in all, Crystal Bearers was an extremely mixed bag, and I’m not sure what target group would truly enjoy it. The exaggerated anime style is too alienating for most of the older generation; hardcore Final Fantasy fans wouldn’t enjoy the over-simplified gameplay, and fans of the original Crystal Chronicles on the Gamecube are sure to be disappointed with the lack of the classic hack-and-slash formula. If an over-the-top mini-game RPG sounds like fun, then maybe you should give it a try, but this one is truly hard to recommend.

IGN
That's only half true though, as Crystal Bearers is in fact a blend of not only story and combat, but also a huge slew of "everybody can play" mini-games at every turn. While the game's main adventure was off to a good start, and even manages to be truly entertaining at times, these oddly paced, often poorly controlled pit stops really bring down the game's more appealing core mechanics. With as much time put to challenges and odd little in-game activities vital aspects of the game were lost, so while I actually enjoyed taking a break every now and then to race chocobos or fish in an out of the way pond, that time and energy would have been infinitely better spent fixing the game's annoying camera, spotty motion controls, and somewhat basic (though rewarding) battle system. There's a decent adventure hiding in Crystal Bearers, but ironically enough after four and a half years it feels like the developer ran out of time to fine-tune and polish the more important pieces of the package.

GNT - Generation Nouvelles Technologies

Crystal Bearers is slick and polished but it somehow comes off feeling like a half-finished product. For every beautiful environment or clever twist on combat, there's a bad design decision that severely hampers its impact. It's particularly disappointing given that fact that this game has been simmering at Square-Enix for over four years now -- almost as long a development cycle as some recent installments in the main Final Fantasy series. Sorry to say, Wii owners, but if you're looking an epic Final Fantasy masterpiece, you're going to have to wait for Square Enix to release something else.

So did the experiment succeed? In some ways, yes. The Crystal Bearers can be quite enjoyable. It’s the kind of game you might play to come down from the rush of the latest action title, the gaming equivalent to a walk in the park. It's not quite exercise and you're not really getting anywhere, but you enjoy the walk for what it is. It will especially appeal to Final Fantasy fans who'd like to experience the series in a different light. Unfortunately the overly simplistic and repetitive gameplay will prove too big a detractor for everyone else. The Crystal Bearers definitely isn’t for everyone, and most eyes will remain firmly affixed to Square-Enix's next 'real' Final Fantasy title.

The game's worst offense is that it never requires that you exert effort. Without side quests, challenging battles and grueling dungeons, the game almost plays itself. And yet, since the story and characters are so enchanting, it pays to at least go through the motions to see the adventure unfold. If only there were more "game" here.
55
Game Informer Magazine
To its credit, Crystal Bearers hits its target graphical style dead on, with cool character designs and a world that fuses fantasy and technology in visually interesting ways. Unfortunately, you would actually have to play the game to enjoy the art, and that is something I just can’t recommend to anyone.

GameSpot
The amount of time it takes to reach the conclusion of The Crystal Bearers can vary wildly depending on how much combat you decide to bother with and how much time you spend trying to figure out how to get where you're going, but regardless of whether it takes you eight hours or 15, you won't enjoy most of that time. A game this beautiful, with an exciting, well-told story like this one, should have gameplay that makes you want to spend time in its world. But as dazzling as the characters and locations are, they can't hide the fact that the game just isn't fun to play.

There's little on show in Crystal Bearers that's worth recommending and if this is Square Enix's way of showing Wii owners a little Final Fantasy love as PS3 and Xbox 360 gamers prepare to devour Final Fantasy XIII, it's only likely to illicit further disgruntlement. An endlessly contrived core adventure filled with dislikeable characters, non-existent evolution, and a promising Wii Remote battle mechanic ruined by shoddy camera control combine to send Crystal Bearers to a decidedly deserved demise at the bottom of the bargain bin. Fish it out at your peril.

Sadly enough, I just can't see this as anything special. The cinematics are nicely done, and the voice acting isn't terrible, but it's not worth the hours of running on foot and wandering over the same areas multiple times to see some odd body language with forced English dubs. And for as massive as the world feels as you hoof it, the areas really feel limited the more you move. There's just nothing very engaging here overall, which is sad, because I expected so much more than just flinging virtual people around.

If Square had kept the fast-paced, action-oriented feeling of the few opening hours throughout, this would have been at least a fun, quick romp through a weird story. But dragging the game out with endless fetch quests and terrible combat makes getting to the end more of a chore than anything. In-game achievements and plenty of sidequests give you something to work towards, even when you're wandering around lost. But without any worthwhile rewards, even they feel unnecessary. If you're looking for some pretty Final Fantasy fan service, replete with Cactaurs, Moogles, and flying Nus, then you'll be able to appreciate the game's great art and creature designs. But Square still has a lot to learn about making a Final Fantasy game that's not an RPG.

It’s not enough, though. Nowhere near enough. The Crystal Bearers reeks of wasted potential. The plot has a few interesting themes, but plays it safe with a predictable but well-paced save-the-kingdom story. The game would have been far more engaging had it focused more on the combat as opposed to the tacky mini-games for the WiiMote. The combat itself is unreliable; with inconsistent controls and awkward camera, battles becomes a tedious affair. It’s not like you’ll need to fight anyway. The difficulty level is almost non-existent, AI is laughable, and there’s little creativity involved with the development of Layle’s powers or the places he explores. Not to mention the headache-inducing backtracking you’ll have to endure. It’s sad, considering how gorgeous some of parts of this game are. Layle might have the best powers of any Final Fantasy protagonist, but it means nothing when the rest of the game does poorly.

Whatever the story behind the development history of The Crystal Bearers, things clearly didn't pan out. This game is a mini-game collection masquerading as an epic adventure, and it doesn't even pull that off well. The battle system is practically pointless and the story feels like a hackjob, lacking any depth whatsoever. There is nothing to recommend about The Crystal Bearers, a shallow embarrassment of a game that takes any progress the Crystal Chronicles series has made and undoes it. Here's hoping this game is completely ignored and the developers move back to the multiplayer roots of the series.
