Spanning four disks and featuring some of the best CG work Square has ever done, Final Fantasy IX is a brilliant conclusion to an era. Players will find that in this installment the story is tighter, the characters are more likable, and the party composition is of utmost importance. Further, the overhauls to the magic and ability systems streamline gameplay and make the junctioning and materia systems seem antiquated. Ultimately, the genius of this series involves a careful blend of character development, story and combat. This time out, Square has refined their formula even further to create a game that, more so than even in the previous two chapters, plays out like an epic tale that will rivet your attention for hours on end. Once again, Square has extended an invitation to its players, and no self-respecting RPG fan should pass up this chance to explore another existence, especially since this is probably the last truly magnificent RPG for the venerable PlayStation.
Final Fantasy IX has a mixture of everything that makes a great RPG, great. It's not revolutionary or evolutionary by any means, but it just does everything in the most solid way possible. An intriguing storyline, characters you actually care about, tried and true FF gameplay, a memorable soundtrack, beautiful, polished graphics, and not many crazy "systems" to learn and master. FFIX definitely leans towards the simpler end of the scale in comparison with the rest of the more recent games in the series, but I personally feel it is a step in the right direction. I am eagerly awaiting the next game in the series, and just hope that Square does not lose track of what they have done in Final Fantasy IX.
The words "final" and "fantasy" have never been more appropriate for the legendary series of SquareSoft RPGs as they are for Final Fantasy IX. Not only is it the last appearance for the series on the PlayStation-the system that brought it massive worldwide popularity-but FFIX also departs from the dark, science fiction tone of the last two installments to return to a more light-hearted, fantasy-based adventure.
PlayStationThe Next Level
It's unfortunate that the PlayStation is an aged console. Under the weight of its own kin (PS2) and various competition, the PlayStation will have to fight hard to stay afloat in the upcoming year. If they could release a game like Final Fantasy IX every month, they would have no problem retaining interest in the system. Final Fantasy IX is not only an entirely enjoyable game to play, but it is also one of the most visually impressive console games to date. Square's last Final Fantasy title for the PlayStation is not only the best in the series, but quite possibly one of the best RPG's to bless the system.
Being the last FF game to ever be released on the Playstation, Squaresoft sure did make it the best Final Fantasy game to date, I'm sorry FFVII and VI, but I just love FFIX's fresh new gameplay, I know many of you die-hard FF fans out there may be thinking I'm senile, but I really think that IX is the best of the series just barely edging out VI and VII, but it being better than Chrono Cross is one decision I just can't make, I'm really having a dilemma here, Chrono Cross and Final Fantasy IX are so frigin' amazing that words just can't describe the sheer greatness that both games possess, don't pass up either one or you will be sorry.
Final Fantasy IX may currently be the best RPG ever created for a gaming console. It contains a deeply involving yet humorous storyline that weaves its magical spell over the unsuspecting gamer in a way that I have never had the pleasure of encountering before.
I personally found the experience to be extremely enjoyable and rewarding. If there was ever one RPG that you should definitely have in your collection this is the one.
I never thought I'd say this, but Final Fantasy IX very nearly replaced Final Fantasy VI as my favorite game of all time (perhaps because they seem to be highly similar.) Even before the end of the first disc, I was sitting there going, ''Oh, man, I can't wait to play this game again!'' I laughed, and even cried a little, at various points in the game. Not since Final Fantasy VI have I gotten so totally sucked into a game. This game will be within easy reach of my Playstation for a long, long time. I feel that Final Fantasy IX truly combines the best of the old with the best of the new, and I can only hope that future Final Fantasy games will measure up.
If you’re looking for the best role-playing experience available on the PSOne, look no further. Even running on a PS2, Final Fantasy IX is still worth both your time and your gaming dollar. I can’t wait to get my hands on FFX this summer.
PlayStationGame Informer Magazine
Final Fantasy fans are always quick to argue about which is the best in the series. Many of these die-hards scoff at Square’s first two PlayStation efforts, admitting that they were pretty to look at, but complaining that the fun somehow got lost in the glitz. Final Fantasy IX certainly doesn’t lack in flash, but its back-to-basics gameplay structure is sure to keep both new-school and old-school FF fans happy. In fact, I predict that years down the road Final Fantasy IX will be the most fondly remembered of the PlayStation run.
All in all, Final Fantasy IX is by far the best looking, best playing and best-designed FF game to date. The intelligent mix of fun, action, depth and humor makes for an incredible experience that you will probably have trouble putting down. Just remember, there is a life outside of your PSOne…Or at least that's what my wife says.
With a massive storyline that actually keeps you guessing for a while, a higher level of difficulty than the last few titles in the series, and tons of cool side-quests and mini-adventures (the whole Chocobo thing is addictive as all get-out, and fun too), Final Fantasy IX is sure to warm the heart of any role-player this holiday season. If you're looking for a game to get your pre-teens and early teens into enjoying reading and such, you could do a lot worse too. It's got a little cursing, but nothing you won't see on television, and it's a fine game to boot.
I have heard in the past Hironobu Sakaguchi stating that FF9 was the closest the series had come to his vision of Final Fantasy, and while this might well have been hype to sell copies at the time I can definitely see what he means. FF9 takes the best elements of the series, polishes them, adds new features, and throws in a whole new cast and engaging story to boot. Personally I found this far more rewarding than any other PS1 or 2 incarnation since FF7 (the jury is still out on whether it matches that title!) and thoroughly believe that no RPG fan, or anyone with a sense of adventure, should miss out on this late PS1 gem!
Really, this game is as good as pie. Possibly better. Pie never looked this good, and I'm sure it doesn't sound this good. Pie does beat it out when it comes to taste, as I really don't enjoy plastic very much. There are so many humorous moments in the game, but at the same time, many emotional moments as well. Throughout my journey, I connected with the characters, as they truly came alive for me. Few games were as engrossing as this, as it really captivated me with its fantastic story and entertaining twists.
Final Fantasy IX is an enchanting game with stunning graphics, loveable characters and an edge of your seat storyline. Although it’s not the best RPG ever made, I would still rank it high against some of the greats. There's no slow point in the game at all and when you're done you'll probably be sad that it's over.
All in all, final fantasy is great game, one of the strongest RPGs we've seen from square since FFVII. This game has no real flaws, the story is amazing, and the graphics, FMV's, battle system, and total experience of playing the game are as equally amazing. This game is magnificent in all of its aspects, so to square what can I say, keep up the good work, because you are on the completely right track. Keep the level of quality high at all times, and Final Fantasy IX does nothing less than that; in continuing a legacy that started a long time ago, and we all know square will continue the tradition with the level of dedication needed, so, until next time enjoy this magnificent work of art (and try keep all your drooling to a minimum during play).
So overall Square came up with a fun little title here. How dare I say that about a Final Fantasy game, you Squareophiles might decry. Well, Final Fantasy no longer holds the appeal it once did just by name alone. A Final Fantasy game is just an RPG, and it has to prove itself on its own merits. Final Fantasy IX is a fun game with great characters and graphics and lots of secrets. It's four discs long, and has anywhere from 35-60 hours of playtime depending on whether or not you pursue all the secrets, but it's by no means epic. That being said I enjoyed Final Fantasy IX and recommend it to any RPG enthusiast, if only for the very retro feel of the game system. Now to see how Final Fantasy X will turn out…
The fact of the matter is that there has never been a Final Fantasy that delivered less than your money's worth of adventure - not now, and probably not ever - and I can't see any Final Fantasy fan experiencing any disappointment at the end of their experience with Final Fantasy IX. Its conclusion may not be the most original you could conceive of, but it's no less satisfying for that. Perhaps I just need to sit back, relax, and remember how I used to feel when I played these games. It was a long time ago, and I was a rather different person then, but reliving the good old days is more than half the point of FFIX.
To summarize, Final Fantasy IX was everything that I really wanted from a Final Fantasy game. It dropped all the major complexities of the previous FF title that made it so off-putting, and brought back the humour and lightheartedness that was so sorely missed. You certainly get your money's worth with four -- count 'em, four -- discs of action, adventure, and top-notch production values. Final Fantasy IX felt much easier than some RPGs I've tried out, but it should still pose the same level of challenge as the other FF games, so there should be no worries to that regard. As you can probably already tell, I highly recommend this game, especially over Final Fantasy VIII. It's just more fun, more intriguing, and features more Moogles. Need I say more?
Wow! I haven't felt this satisfied after completing a game since Metal Gear Solid. The story and ending are the best of any Final Fantasy game. For this reason alone, I want to give IX a 10. Unfortunately, while the story is amazing, the severe lack of innovation in certain aspects of the gameplay slightly hurts IX.
PlayStationAll Game Guide
The bottom line is that fans of the series as well as hardcore RPG gamers should grab this game as soon as possible. It's worth every penny and is a fitting end to the series on the 32-bit PlayStation.
Final Fantasy IX is a great and fun. It is a must have for anyone who has liked any of the Final Fantasy games and must have for those who just like to play a great and memorable even though the villains are lacking.
Final Fantasy IX has nearly all the cards stacked in its favor. While the actual gameplay in the Final Fantasy series is showing its age, the presentation and character development has improved with each game, and with Final Fantasy IX it's stunning throughout the entire game, right up to the truly amazing ending. To combine fresh new gameplay with this kind of presentation is an incredibly thrilling concept, and as Square prepares to move the series now to the PlayStation 2, they may perhaps be doing just that. So, in essence, this could be the last traditional Final Fantasy game. If so, then this era ends on a proud, high note; for not only is Final Fantasy IX the best Final Fantasy to grace the PlayStation, it may very well be the best Final Fantasy to date.
If you have not been persuaded by other Final Fantasy games then this is not going to do anything to change your mind. However, if you have enjoyed the other entries in the series and haven’t given this little gem a try yet, I strongly suggest you do so as soon as possible. Excellent JRPGs are a dime a dozen these days, but the fact FFIX still stands tall as one of the best speaks volumes of its qualities. Don't miss out on one of the best games in the esteemed Final Fantasy series.
The positive, bright characters are a departure from the brooding heroes of
Final Fantasy VII and VIII but the up-beat, straight ahead hero is what MADE
Final Fantasy in the early days. With its redux feel, Final Fantasy IX provides
players with all of the familiar nuances that scream “This is Final Fantasy!”
Quite simply, Final Fantasy IX is one of the best games in the coveted series and one of the top RPGs of the year. And thankfully, this isn't quite the "final fantasy" just yet. Japan's Squaresoft is allegedly hard at work on – you guessed it – Final Fantasy X, but for the new PlayStation 2.
PlayStationGame industry News (GiN)
The final, Final Fantasy on Playstation is a wonderful reminder of everything that Squareoholics hold dear about the seminal RPG series. Littered with references to previous installments, a gameplay system reminiscent of former FF games and an overall feeling of nostalgia, FF IX is a wonderful trip down memory lane in what will probably be a very different series from here on.
Overall it's another quality title from the Japanese masters of RPG's, but I still got the feeling of it's all been done before, same graphics engine, same idea for a plot, same battle system, where's the difference?
Although Final Fantasy IX is by no means perfect, its riveting storyline, strong gameplay, and impressive visuals make it a must-have for any RPG fan. Don't miss out on this one.
After playing my first Final Fantasy game I’ve become a devoted fan of Square’s work. I thoroughly enjoyed the game and am looking forward to playing more games from this talented team. With a storyline that drew me in more than most games I’ve played recently, graphics quality that I thought was impossible on my TV, and a cast of characters that amused and delighted, I’ve found a game that I love. If it weren’t for a few annoyances around the combat system I’d have a new all-time favorite game. As it is, this is one to get, whether you’re a first time Final Fantasy player like I am or a die hard fan of the series.
PlayStationArmchair Empire, The
Final Fantasy IX is a great last hooray for the series on the Playstation. While it doesn’t bring anything new to the table, what it does it does well. If you’re looking for a new adventure, while at the same time taking a walk down memory lane, Final Fantasy IX is the ticket.
Final Fantasy IX serves as a coda to the series as you know it - it's a summation of everything that players have enjoyed about the past ten years of Final Fantasy games.
Final Fantasy IX has been billed as a return to the series' roots, but this is an oversimplification. The roots of the Final Fantasy series have always been appealing characters, an epic story, engaging battles, and an impressive presentation. Elements such as airships, pointy-hatted mages, and crystals have always just been surface symbols, while an emotional tale of humanity in the face of adversity lies at the core of each installment of the series. That's not to say that the return to the older art style is unimportant or without meaning. Final Fantasy VII boosted the role-playing game market on two new continents, and Final Fantasy VIII sold the most copies of any game in the series. Both games were critically acclaimed. So why tinker with a winning formula? The game itself no doubt holds the answer.
But big steps towards a deeper, more immersive experience haven't been made here. Even the most impassioned player must start asking for more out of the Final Fantasy institution, and may in fact receive it when the system moves to the next batch of home consoles. At what point do you want that next level? When do you expect gaming paradigms to be challenged and rebooted? Hopefully, these questions will be answered by the time we all count to 10.
PlayStationChrist Centered Game Reviews
This is a wonderful game if you have the time to play it, and it is very cheap now. However I wouldn't recommend it to young kids for some confusing false religion and innuendo. As I said before, this is possibly the best game for the PS1. So if you are over 12 or so, I recommend it highly.
Final Fantasy IX doesn't score many points for originality, as most everything in the game has been done before. It does feature a couple of unique mini-games such as the card game Tetra Master and item hunting game Chocobo Hot and Cold. What this title does is take many of the best pieces from other games in the series, such as having job-based characters or having item-based skill learning, and combines them in a solid overall game. Final Fantasy IX shows that sometimes the best innovation is finding what works best and fine-tuning it.
PlayStationGame Freaks 365
Square once again has created an RPG that is essential to your collection. However, the plot line and terribly slow battle system make playing through the game a second time tiresome. For those who enjoy restarting games, you may want to break out Final Fantasy VIII again. But Final Fantasy IX is a solid game, with many upsides, characters you'll fall in love with and CG scenes to die for. Any Final Fantasy fan should make sure to pick this one up.
Overall, Final Fantasy IX is a game that, as said before, is certainly playable, but perhaps had its sights set too high and tried for a bit too much going backwards, while not pushing forward enough. It’s got sweet mini game action to make up for a somewhat thin storyline, and the graphics and sound are on par with the top RPGs of the Playstation days. It may feel kinda stale after having experienced many of the gameplay perks in the 2D era, but RPG newcomers will find many things to love about this game. Final Fantasy IX may sit in the shadows of other 32-bit megastuds like Xenogears or Lunar 2, but it is definitely worth playing, no matter how seasoned you are.
The final Final Fantasy for the Playstation draws an exploratory era to a close. All 3 games for this system attempted to try some new things, some quite radical, and Final Fantasy IX was no exception. Through the ups and downs Square learned we wanted more fantasy, and here it is back, for better or for worse. It merely remains to see now if, when Final Fantasy crosses into double digits and a new system, the series can remain dear to an RPGamer's heart.
What it ultimately comes down to is that Final Fantasy IX doesn't offer very much that is new. The game is more than a little formulaic at times, using rehashed bits from other Final Fantasy games and not taking them any further. On the other hand, I'm glad that Square didn't just throw in some poorly thought out new features just for the sake of being different (such as the magic acquisition disaster in FFVIII), and there's no denying that the game is well-crafted and carefully and thoroughly put together so that it can be enjoyed with minimal frustrations.
Still, that’s not enough for me to whole-heartedly recommend this game. Take away those great cinema scenes and the nostalgic appeal for fans of the classic games in the series and Final Fantasy IX is a pretty average effort that just doesn’t quite live up to the standard set by those games it’s trying to imitate.
So really, Final Fantasy IX, while it serves as a fitting summary of the series to this point, also shows the series' advancing age. There's only so many times you can repeat the same thing without it becoming passe, and that is where the danger lies here. I can't help but wish Square would just remake some of the older games in the series up to the standards of Final Fantasy IX and go in a different direction with its newer games. Still, Final Fantasy IX does retain a lot of the magic of the earlier titles, and is definitely a game worth playing. Just don't expect anything earth-shatteringly new. And definitely don't expect crystals.
