All in all, you couldn't really ask for much more in an online RPG experience. Square managed to capture most, if not all of the addictive, endearing qualities of the genre while retaining a decent amount of good ol fashion Fantasy elements. Be warned, however, that those who lack the stamina to stick with it long enough may ultimately feel gypped and burned. While Final Fantasy XI may not be your older brother's Final Fantasy RPG, it is an experience that (eventually) lives up to the name of its predecessors.

Finally Final Fantasy XI, the first MMORPG in the Final Fantasy series, makes its way to North American Playstation 2 owners. Nearly 2 years after its release Japan and months after the PC version was released in North America, Playstation 2 owners can experience the world of Vana’diel. Not only can they experience with fellow North American gamers, gamers can also play along with those that have the PC version and those who are playing in Japan. After a long wait and eager anticipation, gamers can now be swept away to the world of Final Fantasy XI.

The truly amazing thing about Final Fantasy XI is that both the PS2 and PC world are connected to one another. This is the first game ever to accomplish this feat. This way, everyone in the world can play this game together no matter what version they have. You will go about many different missions and sometimes gathering friends to form up parties and add each other on your journey. Finding a good balance on what type of people to bring with you is key. It is good to have a well rounded team that can support each other. The addicting play keeps many people sucked in for hours, days, and maybe weeks. If you do not own Final Fantasy and you love RPG's, then you are really missing out. No matter what version of the game you have, you will be going on an incredible journey through the world of Final Fantasy with millions of other players. Pick this one up now.

Get very comfortable because Final Fantasy XI will have you so engrossed in its superbly massive world that you won’t want to leave your couch ever again. Sure the $12.95 monthly charge might seem a bit steep but believe me when I say that it’s worth every penny.

Square-Enix’s long-running and extremely successful Final Fantasy franchise has been undergoing many huge changes as of late. They’ve recently released the first-ever direct sequel to a Final Fantasy game (Final Fantasy X-2), they're gearing up to release a four-player Gauntlet-style game (Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles), and they’ve now released their very first MMORPG set in the Final Fantasy universe, Final Fantasy XI. There are many people out there who are naysaying the game, saying that it simply couldn’t be Final Fantasy if it’s in a large, multiplayer setting.

Since Ultima Online gave birth to the idea of a role-playing game that put hundreds of thousands on servers to adventure on together, the MMORPG (Massively Multiplayer Online RPG) genre has grown to be one of the biggest on the PC. Games like Ultima Online, Star Wars Galaxies, and most notoriously, Everquest have taken the genre into the realm of mainstream gaming with the idea of joining other players to tackle tough enemies, as well as running around killing weak stuff on your own to become tough enough to be a worthwhile teammate. On the PC, this genre is mature and not any old MMO can make a dent nowadays. On the console end, however, the MMORPG niche hasn’t yet been carved. There’s been tries – Sega’s great Phantasy Star Online is not quite MMO, but still a great online RPG, and Everquest has been ported over to PS2, though it hasn’t quite been as popular on the PlayStation 2 as on the computer. But nothing has yet caught on in console land other than the aforementioned PSO.

Eleven is supposed to be a mystic number signifying unconventionality. Now that the Final Fantasy series has a foothold in the double digits, I’m pleased to report that unconventionality is what Final Fantasy XI Online struts in spades — blending an epic story with vivid character combinations, splendid graphics, and the richest online ecosystem available anywhere.

Closing Comments Final Fantasy XI is probably a bigger love it or hate it game than even Final Fantasy X-2 was. Though it aims its sights high on enticing fans of the franchise to the online side of the pond, the fact remains that MMORPGs just aren't for everyone. Truthfully, some people are just more content sitting at home and curling up with their controller much in the same way that others do with a good book or tasty dessert. They simply don't want their Final Fantasy experience any other way.

In all, the pros of Final Fantasy XI greatly outweigh the cons. The graphics, job and skill system, as well as the overall polish make it an enjoyable experience. The many quests and missions offered allow players to find things to do alone when friends are not online to form a group. For fans of the Final Fantasy series, they will take to FFXI like ducks to water. Players that are migrating from other MMORPGs should be pleased to see so many long waited features in other games already present here. Player housing, player controlled transport and an auto map system for example, though the lack of PvP will turn some hardcore players off. Square Enix has done a very good job in marrying (almost) all of the features that you would want in a MMORPG with the unique Final Fantasy universe and all the quality game features people have come to expect with the franchise.

In the sixteen years that the Final Fantasy series has been around, players have been treated to some of the most cinematic games ever seen. With production values that rival those of Hollywood blockbusters, every title produced by Squaresoft has established new benchmarks for graphics, plotlines and gameplay. Even better, there were plenty of mini-games, secrets and side quests to keep players interested and eager for the next installment. Well, the latest version threw fans for a loop, when it was announced that the next Final Fantasy game wouldn?t just be a role-playing game, but would be a massively multiplayer online role-playing game, or MMORPG. Even wilder, console players wouldn?t get their hands on the game first, PC gamers would. Call it an early holiday present for computers as Final Fantasy XI has arrived from recently merged Square Enix.

Herrlich!

By now, it isn't easy for a massively multiplayer online role-playing game to distinguish itself. Years ago, games like Ultima Online and especially 1998's EverQuest set the standards for this unique style of gaming, which today spans a seemingly countless number of similarly styled games that look identical on the surface--and, in many ways, actually are virtually identical.

If FFXI didn’t adhere so closely to the genre’s more aggravating conventions, then perhaps it could have been a breakout MMORPG. Alas, it feels like someone at Square was playing too much EverQuest while this game was being developed, so in its current state, it’s sadly relegated to sit near, but not on, the top of its genre. But that’s OK, isn’t it?

For many, Final Fantasy XI will be the Holy Grail of nonlinearity: a wide-open RPG universe with Final Fantasy flair, defined by its players as much as its developers, beloved for all its flaws. Love it or hate it, there?s nothing like it on your PS2.

Square knows its audience, and has delivered a solid and addictive MMORPG for them to lose themselves in. There is so much to do here and so many ways to play this game, that there is certain to be something here for any RPG fan. While there is a pretty sizeable barrier to entry for PS2 players, the game is certainly worth the investment if you don't have a suitable PC alternative.

You'll have to jump through several proverbial flaming hoops before you start having fun in the world of Vana'diel, but your efforts may well be rewarded. Go into this game with the right expectations--knowing, for instance, that this is a time-consuming game that takes a while to get into and isn't dramatically different, at its core, from other online RPGs--and you'll find in Final Fantasy XI a different-enough take on the online role-playing genre that the experience can end up being both rewarding and refreshing. And since the world of the game is already filled with dedicated players who mostly seem to be enjoying the game rather than complaining about its problems, the tone of the experience of Final Fantasy XI is ultimately more uplifting than that of most other, similar games.

When I first played Final Fantasy XI, I was hoping this would be it, all I needed. I was hoping it would be the one game that would make me drop out of school, buy two months worth of food, and not leave my basement for anything. At first, it tugged at and held my attention. However, after playing it for nearly a month, I'm realizing that it isn't all I'd hoped for.

Since Square Enix revealed that Final Fantasy XI would be an MMORPG, series fans have been crying for them to rename it Final Fantasy Online, to save the enumeration for a "real" Final Fantasy game. The game will certainly challenge series fans about what a Final Fantasy game is, and MMORPG fans are in for a similar challenge. After surmounting two very different learning curves, however, both camps will find Final Fantasy XI to be a beautiful and well-crafted game if they can get over some of its shortcomings.

Rarely have so many people been psyched for the release of a game nearly two years old (based on its Japanese release). Thankfully, those same people will find the experience of Final Fantasy XI for the PlayStation 2 an ultimately pleasant one, once they get past the daunting preliminaries. And make no mistake, they are daunting -- the online experience of Final Fantasy comes at the price of some "initial reality," as it were.

Seeing as how this title marks the debut of the PS2’s hard drive and Final Fantasy’s first venture into the realm of the console MMORPG market, there has been a lot of commotion and anticipation surrounding it.

Final Fantasy XI presents a grading nightmare quite unlike anything we're ever seen at GR. The game itself is good, far better than the online Everquest games for the PS2 and even holding up well next to fancier PC MMORPGs. It's genuinely fun and runs well. Plus, it comes with the HDD. However, it's hard to tell anyone to walk into a store and slap this kind of cash down just to play one video game when for the same money you could buy three or four. Wasting your time is one thing, but wasting your money is another entirely make sure you're prepared before jumping into this fantasy. And that's my Final thought.

WindowsFragland.net
I preferably see this Final Fantasy not as a part of the main series, with one or another clever subtitle like "Ka-ching!". It's not a bad game and it contains everything you may expect from a MMORPG and adds the specific FF-feel and a beautiful soundtrack. Experienced EveryQuest or Ultima player won't find anything new, but gamers with knowledge of FF, ready to make their first Massive Multiplayer steps, won't regret the purchase. But beware, a lot of time and a lot of money are required.

I remember the days when Final Fantasy was reserved for the console systems, with their cute little pixels, chocobos and rich stories. Of course, as I rarely could stomach the gameplay of the classic titles on the SNES, Genesis and so on, so I can’t really comment on my glorious memories. Now, Final Fantasy has evolved into a gorgeous 3D game, with cinematic cut scenes, and world-renowned orchestral performances-even feature films. It’s fitting then that this sensation makes it online, where all the rabid fans can intermix and grind with the best of em.

Putting an MMORPG on a console is an ambitious undertaking, one that's almost doomed out of the gates. To be fair, the content in FF XI is great - the character system is engaging, the concepts based on allegiance are cool and graphically it's certainly acceptable. However, until you take the time to program the macros to your liking, the interface ranges from utterly unusable to merely horribly frustrating - even with a USB keyboard.

Xbox 360GameCell UK
FFXI being released on consoles implies that they’re trying to bring the game to the armchair audience. The problem is that that, as far as I'm concerned, MMORPGs are not suited to console play. The whole point of consoles was to bring a relaxed form of gaming into homes, where endless installation wasn’t needed and you could quickly dip in and out of a game when you felt like it. MMORPGs belong on PCs (the text-only chat implies this) and I seriously doubt many casual gamers will be prepared to try something new, even though it’s great fun and it’s easier to crank out the hours on a sofa or bed than on an office chair in front of the PC…

Windows2404.org PC Gaming
In summary, I wouldn't recommend this game, except maybe to MMORPG enthusiasts, but not even them, really. The first EverQuest was immensely flawed but it was still certainly better in the end. I suppose this game isn't much worse or better than your average MMORPG -- it takes few risks. But this review isn't meant to evaluate the game against other MMORPGs, against many of which it holds its own -- it's meant to tell you whether it's fun or not. And it's not.

Final Fantasy XI marks the first appearance of a massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) on the Xbox 360, as well as Square-Enix's first effort for the console. Released back in 2003 for the PC and 2004 for the PlayStation 2, the Xbox 360 is no different save for some graphical upgrades. This latest release on Microsoft's console comes packaged with the full version of FFXI and its three expansions: Rise of Zilart, Chains of Promathia, and the new Treasures of Aht Urhgan. Though there's a staggering amount of content and gameplay awaiting players in FFXI, it's no longer as compelling to plow through as it once was. On the Xbox 360, FFXI shows its age and suffers from issues of unnecessary inconvenience.

The launch of the Xbox 360 version would have been a great opportunity for Square Enix to introduce some badly needed updates and upgrades to Final Fantasy XI, but regrettably, this wasn't the case. On the plus side, you are getting quite a bit of content here: three expansions' worth if you count Rise of the Zilart, which launched alongside the North American version of the game. If you're the sort that has the fortitude to play this kind of MMO, then you're going to have a great deal to keep you busy. Provided you're cool with a monthly fee, of course. But if you're new the genre, you might want to know what you're getting into: a very, very demanding experience. Yes, it can be rewarding, and you might just make a lot of friends in the process. But it's very likely that other MMOs will eventually materialize on consoles in the relatively near future. If what you've read has in any way deterred you, then you may want to wait until these emerge before grinding your teeth on an MMO.

There's something to be said for a game that can stand the test of time. Final Fantasy XI Online dates back to 2002, when it was originally released in Japan. Clearly inspired by the influential massively multiplayer PC game EverQuest, FFXI infused the online role-playing formula with the distinctive look and feel of Square Enix's hugely popular franchise. The game naturally attracted thousands of players, many of whom stuck with FFXI over the long haul, since it featured a deep character class system and a huge, evolving world to explore. However, it's simply impossible to look at FFXI for the Xbox 360 in the same way as the previously released PC and PlayStation 2 versions. Paradoxically, that's because this latest translation of the game is essentially no different than the others. It makes no concessions whatsoever to take advantage of the Xbox 360, and it practically goes out of its way to inconvenience and alienate new players.

I didn't have expectations for Final Fantasy XI Online, and it's a good thing, because I'd have been disappointed. I can see where the addictive qualities are. It's fun to complete missions. It's satisfying to level up. It's funny to watch a newbie player (like myself) get killed by the Forest Hares at the start of the game. But I can't find myself getting into this. I do recommend that anyone looking into this MMORPG try it on the Xbox 360, since it contains the original game and every one of the expansions, including the new Treasures of Aht Urghan, which was also released on the PlayStation 2 and PC. But if you're looking for an Xbox 360 RPG, I'd tell you to pass on this.

This game doesn't deserve a Final Fantasy title, as there is nothing Final Fantasy about it. If MMOs are your thing, there are other and better titles out there. Final Fantasy XI is not good, and while I miss the experience, I've decided that MMOs are not good either. I enjoyed many things I did and many of the people I met, but in the end, an MMO is only a glorified chat room that costs you $13 a month.
