Overall, I would recommend everyone to upgrade Stronghold 2 to version 1.2 (or newer) to get the maximum out of the game. Without this patch the game's score would be much lower - 60% or less!! But with the 1.2 patch the single-player game is really good in my opinion and well worth buying the game for. The multiplayer side though still has some major connection problems that hopefully will be fixed in the next patch which developer has said they are working on. This game also has a lower starting price mark ($39.99), which is never a bad thing.

I appreciate attempts to combine old ideas into something new and exciting. When it doesn't work, though, the result is often clumsy and hard to control. This is the root of Stronghold 2's problems - neither the RTS-style combat nor the castle sim elements of the game live up to today's standards.

While there are some good ideas at play in Stronghold 2, they just aren't implemented in a way that I can get behind. For every good point, there's something ugly overshadowing it. Even with the patch, the game isn't something I would want to recommend to my friends and therefore am not recommending it to my readers. You'd do well to avoid this unless you're a serious fan of the series or simply want to build castles in the sandbox mode. The story is a mess, visuals are lifeless, and gameplay is flawed on many levels. Hopefully Firefly can recover from this with their next title.

Let me tell you, there's nothing I like more than an interactive game that doesn't need my interaction.

You know there's probably something to be said for how worthwhile a game is when you go online and not one single person is playing. Such is what I discovered when I tried to play Stronghold 2 late one night online. Maybe it was just the time, or maybe somehow I didn't set up Gamespy properly but when I found nobody playing online, I was a little bit surprised. As poor as Stronghold 2 is, I did have some fun with it somewhere between the 3rd and 15th hours of gameplay. After that time, the minor quirks soon became major annoyances, and the game started to wear on me. That isn't to say the game is without merit; it's just that many of the problems could have been easily fixed given a few more months in development. This could easily have been a title to recommend, but instead, it's merely a slightly above average title that joins the legions of games that could have been more.

Store your food and raise the drawbridge, for Stronghold 2 has been released and is ready to lay siege to your computer. For those of you unfamiliar with the Stronghold series, or castle sim games in general, Stronghold 2 puts you in command of a castle. You must feed your peasants and keep them happy, build walls and towers to protect your property, and raise an army to lay siege to your opponent's castles. While there have been plenty of additions made to Stronghold 2 over its predecessor (in addition to the implementation of some good ideas), a poor story, weak artificial intelligence, and plenty of bugs mar what otherwise could have been a simple yet fun castle-building game.

The predictability and low AI of your opponents do their best to wreck the game completely. So although some missions tend to be fun, the effect is completely ruined by the monotonous process of rebuilding your kingdom or performing a set military attack. The building segment seems to be very detailed at first glance, but you soon discover it's rather repetitive and boring, and some illogical solutions make it frustrating at times. On the other hand, the military campaign is more action-packed, but it lacks substance, so it leaves you rather dissatisfied and irritated by the brainlessness of your enemies. Other than that, I have also experienced several game crashes, as well as serious lag issues during larger scale battles. All in all, Stronghold 2 promises more than it delivers, failing to capitalize on an originally unique and exciting idea.

Stronghold 2 deserved a better fate than this. All of the trappings were in place for a worthy successor to a great line of castle-building real-time strategy games. When we looked at a beta of the game a few weeks ago, there were issues common to unfinished software that you hope get addressed before a game is released. If Stronghold 2 received such attention, it didn't get enough of it.

STRONGHOLD 2 was seemingly built on an ambitious plan: Combine the economic model of the Settlers series, the combat model of the Total War series, and the fortress building of the Castles series--all while staying true to previous Stronghold games. Sadly, loose coding, numskull design choices, and "special-needs" A.I. turn what could have been a sleek, multitalented Bernard Hopkins into a muddled, out-of-control Mike Tyson.
