As it is, FSW: Ten Hammers is a good game with similar problems returning from the original. All of the new features really serve to please the original hardcore gamers, rather than open the game up to any potential new ones. Still, if you want hardcore strategy and military sim gaming, this is for you.

Overall, Ten Hammers is a marked improvement over the first title. The graphics, sounds, and gameplay have all been polished up considerably. The difficulty level may have been cranked up a little too high for the average gamer to enjoy the single-player experience, but the robust multiplayer component of the game helps to make up for it. Plus, playing with friends takes the edge off the more clinical feel of the single-player game. If you're a fan of the first Full Spectrum Warrior, and if you have a few friends willing to give you some cover fire, Full Spectrum Warrior: Ten Hammers is definitely worth taking a shot at.

Despite my rather large list of complaints, it should go as noted that Full Spectrum Warrior: Ten Hammers is by far not a bad game. Having been a fan of the original I was anxious to see what Pandemic could do to improve the series. And for the most part they offered multiple new ways to approach each situation, but I just felt that had the control scheme been adjusted to reflect these new changes, this game could’ve been much better. Even still, checking out Ten Hammers is a must for fans, and even if you prefer to run 'n gun your way through war-sims, checking out the methodical pace offered here would definitely be worth your time.

The strategy elements and the point-and-click system bog the action down in this game. I can see how it can be used to teach a soldier to think before he acts, considering that he's putting his life on the line and can't respawn, but those looking for an action-packed game with a focus on fun had better look elsewhere.

FSW:10 Hammers is in a category all by itself. It's THE tactical war game for consoles at this time. If you are looking for this type of game there's only one way to go. The leap frog style of squad movement isn't something that you see every day and there might be a reason for that. If you're not completely into Ten Hammers from the first mission there's little chance that plowing ahead will pull you in. If you are hooked from the start, it will test your addiction with its repetitiveness. It takes a special type of gamer to stick with, and enjoy FSW:Ten Hammers. While the first FSW was considered somewhat revolutionary, it was something different and unique, only one sequel later the game seems a bit one dimensional and stale.

Full Spectrum Warrior: Ten Hammers provides some interesting control upgrades, as well as a longer campaign, plus an adversarial multiplayer mode to play online. However, the overall feel of the game is still very similar to the original, which should please those who liked the first one, but may turn off those who are looking for a bigger leap. Controls that are still overly abstract and unwieldy at times, as well as uneven AI, make for a product that ends up being much more interesting as a design idea than as an actual game.

It's hard to argue that Pandemic didn't do its due diligence with Ten Hammers. The game feels like a slightly more refined, challenging, and lengthy version of its predecessor. But we're ultimately left with the feeling that this was not enough. The game's foundation is extremely solid, and with a bit more creative effort, the sequel could have turned out a truly evolutionary iteration on the original's experience. What we actually have, though, is something more in line with what the original should have been that ends up being less compelling for its lateness.

Had the original Full Spectrum Warrior been as good as this, it would doubtless have been heralded as a groundbreaking classic of a war game - sadly, Ten Hammers has arrived a year or two too late to deserve such an accolade. It still deserves to be played, however, as Ten Hammers is a cerebral and unusual war game with issues that do not, in the end, detract from its effectiveness.

However, fans of the genre will appreciate the added commands and improved AI of the game. Whether these improvements are enough to purchase the second title in the Full Spectrum Warrior series will most likely be decided by a game rental first.

Full Spectrum Warrior: Ten Hammers must be commended because it is a unique approach to a genre I'm sure many felt had been played out to its fullest. Unfortunately though, some key design decisions mixed with gameplay that, whilst solid, is very repetitive produces an experience that the casual gamer will probably struggle to fall in love with. On top of this, to call Ten Hammers a true sequel is stretching matters pretty far - if it was a PC only title there is no doubt it should have been an expansion pack.

Ten Hammers isn't a terrible game by any means, but it's a potentially great game ruined by a few questionable design decisions that make it feel more like work than entertainment. Unless you like gaming masochism, you'll be screaming along with us, wondering how the normally reliable Pandemic got it so wrong this time.

Ultimately Ten Hammers doesn't build all that much on the original and is targeted at those hardcore strategists who truly enjoyed the first game. While the tactical combat is still the best around, more casual gamers hoping for a military action fix may find it too frustrating, too inconsistent and too cold for their liking.

The only question you need to ask is just how much shooter you want mixed in with your squad-based tactical game. If the answer is "none," Full Spectrum Warrior is still the best option. If it's a style of game that tickles you and you somehow missed the first one, Ten Hammers is just as good a place to start. And if you actually played through the entire first game and still want more, well, here's more. Unfortunately, it's mostly more of the same, plus the possible bonus of some extra guilt and doubt.

Unfortunately, it's spoiled by painfully awkward gameplay, lobotomized recruits (on both sides), and a million annoying ways to die. This war isn't quite hell --- it's just profoundly frustrating.

For those who missed the first game, Full Spectrum Warrior is pure tactical simulation. There's no run-and-gun, and very little is left to chance. If you've placed your guys with adequate cover in positions where they effectively support each other, they'll do great. If you leave them exposed, they'll get shot. Period. The fact that the game was billed as an actual military training tool ported over for the entertainment of us civvies earned it a lot of cred. This also explains why it is much more intellectual than the twitchy, visceral experience these things usually are. The biggest problem with FSW is that once you have the hang of it, there isn't a lot in there to and keep things varied and challenging, turning it into a grueling game of leapfrog with squads. Yeah, yeah -- realistic combat simulation doesn't have power-ups or boss fights. We're fine with that, but what makes for a good training tool doesn't really equate to an interesting game in the long term.
