Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers is a supernatural thriller by Jane Jensen. You play Gabriel Knight (duh), an author who is writing a book on the Voodoo Murders. Every night, you have nightmares that are based on the murders, and little does he realize that he will be deeply involved.

The game begins in St. George's Book Store in the French Quarter area of New Orleans, and you just woke up to be greeted by Grace Nakimura, your secretary, who hands you a tape recorder that may be useful in the game. First, click the ASK icon on her and, when the interrogation screen appears, ask if you have any messages. Two messages are useful. One is from your grandmother, who wants you to go through your father's shit in her attic. The other is from Detective Frank Mosely who left some photographs for you, which you can pick up at the station. You can ask Grace about the rest of the topics if you want. Exit the interrogation screen. Next, read today's newspaper on the table where the espresso machine is, and get the tweezers and magnifying glass from there also. Now click the HAND cursor on the upper-left corner of the bookshelf to find a book written by Heinz Ritter. Click on the right side of the bookshelf to get a book on snakes. Open the cash register and get the gift certification, which will come in handy later. Leave the bookshelf.
A word about the map: Unlike other maps used in some Sierra games, this game requires you to travel to destinations that are spread between two maps. The map of the French Quarter, and the Greater New Orleans Area Map. The reason you have to do this is that not all locations fit on one screen. Your first destination is your grandmother's, but you won't see it straight away. Click on the Greater New Orleans Area Map and click on the icon that looks like your grandmother's photo.
Gran will greet you at the front door, and the two of you sit on the sofa. This is a good time to interrogate her, so click the ASK cursor on her. When the interrogation screen comes up, ask Gran about the Knight family, and she will tell you about the family's three members. Ask her about them as well until she repeats herself (for each one of them). Leave the interrogation screen. Now leave Gran and walk up the stairs to the attic. There, get the sketch book sitting on the chair, and then read the sketch book (from inside inventory). Now click on the OPERATE cursor on the clock to bring a close-up view of it. Move the hands so that it reads 3 o' clock. Rotate the pictures above the clock's face so that the picture of the dragon is at the top. Now click the OPERATE cursor on the key to open the drawer, and take the photo and letter from inside. Look at the photo and read the letter. Head back downstairs and ask Gran about Heinz Ritter. When you are done with that, kiss Gran goodbye and leave. On the map, click on the French Quarter icon and travel to the Police Department. (The icon looks obvious enough.)
There, click the ASK cursor on Frick, the desk sergeant. Ask him about Detective Mosely. You will told that he's attending a crime scene. Ask him about the crime scene. He will tell you that the location is confidential. Bummer. Ask him about the photographs and then exit. The sergeant will give you an envelope. Go into your inventory and open it. There are two photographs. One is a murder victim and the other is Mosely when he was young. Look at the photo of the murder victim. When you're done, leave the PD and travel to Jackson Square by clicking on the green bench.
Jackson Square is divided into four quadrants. When you first enter, notice the motorcycle cop. Go to the northwest quadrant of the park. Now watch the mime here as he pisses people off by following them. Perhaps he will follow you as well. Remember that motorcycle cop? Have him follow you to the cop. (Make sure that you don't walk too close to other people, otherwise he'll follow them again.) When you get closer to the cop, the mime will do his shit and make the cop mad. Eventually, the cop will chase the mime and will go off-screen. This is a good time to click the OPERATE cursor on the motorcycle to overhear a conversation that reveals the location to Lake Pontchartrain (where the crime scene is). After this, you'll get busted by the cop. Leave Jackson Square. On the map, click the Greater New Orleans map, and then on the police banner tape.
You will arrive at the lake. After the cut-scene, look at the vévé marks on the ground at the right side of the screen, and use the magnifying glass on them. Then take out your tweezers and use them on the snake scale that you find there. Jot down the pattern that you see nearby using the sketch book. Pick up the clay by the shore of the lake. Your job here is done. Leave the area and head for the Police Department.
There, ask Frick about Mosely again and use the OPEN icon on Mosely's door. Inside, click the ASK icon on Mosely and ask him about the patterns. Ask him about the other six patterns that he tells you about. Leave Mosely's office and talk to Officer Franks. Ask her if you can check out the file. Once you have the file, examine it then place the file in Franks's in-box. Return to Mosely's office and ask Mosely about Photograph. Gabriel will ask Mosely for a photo. When Mosely asks what sort of photo, mention a cop/author photo. Mosely will summon Franks into the office to pose for the photo. When a list of dialogue choices come up, say Hold on a sec while I go check my hair. Exit the office. Grab the file from the in-box and then photocopy it. Return to Mosely's office to get on with the photo. When it's over, leave Mosely and exit the Police Department. When the map appears, travel to the Dixieland Drug Store by clicking on the voodoo doll.
When you go in the store, read the sign sitting on the counter, and show the murder photo to the dude behind the counter. Then leave the shop and click on the knight to return to the book store. Click the ASK cursor on Grace and get her to do some research on Malia Gedde, the woman that you met at the crime scene. Exit the interrogation screen. Day 1 will end with Gabriel having another nightmare.
