While the game has no multiplayer, it does have outstanding A.I., and the Metaverse feature allows players to upload completed games to a database the A.I. can use to improve its play. Even straight out of the box, though. Galactic Civilizations is essential for any real strategy game fan.

The year is 2178 and Earth has made limited contact with other civilizations. Space travel and communication between everyone was done via stargates. This technology was expensive and limited and resulted in only limited space exploration. This all changes when us humans invent the 'hyper drive' which makes affordable long distance travel a reality. In the belief that the 5 main alien races in the galaxy would come together in this new age of communication Earth shares this technology (doh!). Instead of the expected Age of Enlightenment, the Age of Expansion and Exploitation is born.

At first glance, one might be forgiven for assuming that Galactic Civilizations is just a Master of Orion 3 knockoff. Certainly, the games look similar. Players, starting with one world, a survey vessel, and a colony ship, move out into a 2D grid map of the universe and settle other worlds in an effort to dominate the galaxy. Of course, the galaxy isn't empty. There are five alien empires and a host of minor races out there who just might have something to say about that -- so conflict and competition are inevitable.

As its title suggests, Galactic Civilizations is a bit like Sid Meier's Civilization, but in space. Based on a classic 1994 game for PCs using IBM's OS/2 operating system, Galactic Civilizations gives a nod to the elegant simplicity of Sid Meier's popular strategy series. But regardless of whether or not you're sci-fi fan, the outer-space setting isn't the real reason you should sit up and take notice. Galactic Civilizations' strong AI, robust diplomacy, and variety of strategic options make it an outstanding turn-based strategy game.

It's always a pleasure to watch a small PC-based games developer do well, as I've pointed out repeatedly while praising the efforts of such distinctive companies as Frog City, A-Sharp, Spiderweb Software, and Malfador Machinations. It's a more satisfying experience still when such a developer keeps afloat over the years, neither sinking from lack of success nor vanishing into the bowels of some monolithic, impossibly rich game producer. Stardock Systems has impressed me on both counts, repeatedly producing games and Windows customization applications that please. However, their efforts have never before placed them in the spotlight. With Galactic Civilizations, they just might have their breakthrough product. I've mixed reactions about some aspects of this 4x space strategy game, but at no point was I in doubt that it has a lot going for it.

Worth Playing
As it stands only people who have interest in the older turn-based games will really take notice about Galactic Civilizations, which is really a shame as GC really outshines most turn-based games to date. Galactic Civilizations will more than likely never enter mainstream gaming, but it is a good game and will please those with a love for turn-based strategy games and a little nostalgia in their hearts.

Galactic Civilizations is one of those 4X games where the player gets the opportunity in a turnbased set-up to conquer the universe, kick E.T.'s ass, make alliances, set up trade routes with other aliens and explore the resources/oddities of space. That's pretty much (and complex) for a game so it gives publishers more reasons to ignore this genre with the consequence that we haven't seen a lot of classics the last years in this genre. If Stardock will change this situation with their Galactic Civilizations is something you'll find out in this review.

The galaxy is held together by a system of stargates that allow travel from one civilization to another. As we are humans, we’ve found improvements to be made. The invention of the hyperdrive has begun the unrestricted exploration of the galaxy. Now other civilizations are rushing for the same solar systems you are. You’ll need to find the right balance of industry, military, diplomacy, and trade depending on how you want to try to win.

To sum up, you never know when a game is fun and addictive until you learn how to play it. This one may have somewhat of a sharp learning curve, but once you get into the routine, it shouldn't be too difficult to conquer every region of the galaxy. No matter what you prefer, war, political or economic influence, or diplomacy, it's all there to assure you'll have a variety of ways to prosper and triumph over other races. The game doesn't include multiplayer, which we do not consider a drawback since the designing team took the opportunity to enhance the single-player campaigns instead. Also, the wide range of options and customizations increase the game's replay value. On the weak side of the situation though, Galactic Civilizations simply doesn't have enough features to allure average gamers into its complex world.

Galactic Civilizations is a solid turn based game which sticks to the magic solutions of its forefathers and provides a few new tricks that definitely make room for interesting developments. Now to the meat of the matter…how much fun is the game? Personally, I like turn based games at the beginning but as things get really big they start to look too much like work. Galactic Civilizations does try to fix this with supporting AI but let’s face it, micromanagement will be a large part of the game. If this appeals to you and you like detailed and long campaigns, I can tell you that this game will not disappoint. If you played Civilization and are looking for a somewhat narrower space version, I think you will like this game. But for anyone out there looking for the next Starcraft don’t set yourself up for disappointment and give it a pass.

Adrenaline Vault, The (AVault)
As a result of its timing, Galactic Civilizations is in the rare position of being able to capitalize on the failings of Master of Orion 3. Unfortunately, out of the box, it is hard to recommend due to its own failings, although it is equally hard not to be optimistic about its potential given both current and future patches, as Stardock has a strong record of staying committed to their projects. Those who are seeking immediate gratification or a sequel to the far more militaristic Master of Orion 2 should look elsewhere. Ultimately, Galactic Civilizations is an extremely approachable game that has a strong foundation for those who are willing to stick with it for the long haul, despite the fact that it tends to wear a bit thin at present due to the vagaries of its random events and a difficulty level that tends to be too easy or too hard, with very little middle ground for experienced players.

Space – the final frontier. These are the voyages of the USS Hero. It’s mission, to explore the ass end of the universe in order to study space junk and hopefully find something useful in the scrap. That is but one of the many ships you have available to you in order to further your conquest of the galaxy. Aside from survey vessels you get colony ships, scouts and various fighters, corvettes, frigates, battleships and of course the Death – I mean Terror Star.

Leerlauf? Stellenweise. Miese Startpositionen? Ständig. Zu aggressive KI? Ja. Galactic Civilizations birgt Frustpotential – mir gefällt’s dennoch.
