The blue and green marble we call earth becomes a battleground for super-powered warriors in this Dragon Ball Z epic based closely on the cartoon series.

    Dragon Ball Z 101

Vets of the Dragon Ball Z series can feel free to skip the next few paragraphs, but for the uninitiated, here's the background to the game:

The Dragon Ball Z phenomenon originated in Japan more than ten years ago and has now conquered cartoons, movies, manga and videogames. Offering a unique brand of action, drama and quirky humor, the series is poised on the crest of the anime wave that continues to flood U.S. shores.

From Arqua to Zarbon, a huge cast of heroes and villains battles for control of earth. Androids, aliens and time travel are all key ingredients as the Dragon Ball Z story spirals into the stratosphere with more plot twists than an episode of General Hospital during sweeps month.

    Go-go Gohan

You start the game as Gohan. As the son of the great hero, Goku, you are full of potential, but must train hard before you can stand up to the evil Frieza and his minions. Your journal keeps track of quests you receive from the many characters you encounter.

One early quest places the arrogant Hercule's parade float directly in your path. To get his pompous parade rolling, you must first meet his demands for an open-faced club sandwich and a recording of his favorite song, "Eyes of the Lion."

Other, more serious quests will build up to a final showdown with Cell, a super-powered villain who can drain power from his opponents. The game spans a large portion of the entire Dragon Ball Z story line, including the Trunks, Android and Cell sagas.

As you progress, you gain control of five characters: Gohan, Trunks, Vegeta, Piccolo and Goku. You will find special doors that must be opened by specific characters, but you can easily switch unlocked characters at any save point.

In the style of a role-playing game, you will build each character's capabilities in categories such as strength, power and endurance. Actual combat, though, involves frantic button-pressing action, as you attack enemies with both distance and melee attacks. There is no block button, and there is little strategy involved in the battles.

When you find special markers, you can fly across the overworld to new places, but then you must explore the old-fashioned way -- by foot.

Dragon Ball Z: Legacy of Goku II delivers an adventure that is true to the cartoon series. Impressive full-motion video gives the game an authentic feeling, while in-jokes spice up the dialog for fans. A combination of RPG and action elements will please gamers from both camps, even if they don't know Goku from tofu.
