Some kids first find out about death through the passing of a pet. Others may find out through this game. When I first started playing, I died like it was going out of style. Hell, I even got Goku killed while trying to save Gohan from Raditz. Oh yeah, that was supposed to happen. This title’s adherence to both the substance and style of the show are what kept me playing it – and I’m not even a fan.

The Age
To begin with, only one Ki, or energy weapon, is
available. As Goku gains more experience points he also acquires more Ki attacks. Unfortunately, once
you begin to charge an energy attack you lose the ability to aim. This means that by the time you
actually unleash the attack the enemy is often no longer in the line of fire - you'll quickly discover that it's
often better to dodge and run rather than stand and fight. Along the way Goku also collects flight
charges that help to reach otherwise inaccessible areas. Although there are many quests to complete
on your way to victory, gameplay is not overly captivating. This is most likely to appeal to the fighting
fans that like their gameplay to involve a degree of strategy.

For all of its faults, Dragonball Z: The Legacy of Goku delivered a decent gameplay experience that left me wanting more. I was frustrated by its slow, aggravating gameplay, but I still enjoyed it enough to keep playing and I hated to see it end. Die hard DBZ fans will probably love it, and RPG lovers will probably like it. But if length is of any concern to you, save your money and rent it. If the short length doesn't matter, then this might be the DBZ game you've been waiting for. It's the best one thus far. Hopefully a better (and longer) sequel will be released next year.

Dragonball and Dragonball Z are two of the most prolific and classic stories in Japanese anime. At the beginning of it all, we see a good-natured, naïve hero, who just wants to eat, sleep, and play with his friends (awwww). Life is never so simple, however, so our hero has to step up and save the world, again, and again, and again… But he never loses his heart of gold or his naïve outlook on the purity of life.

Wander around, fetch various things for various people, fight enemies, and occasionally fight a boss. The game will seem a little repetitive eventually, but thankfully, it's a short game, so it'll be over before you have a chance to get too bored with it. Overall, if you're a fan of Dragon Ball Z, this game is probably fairly cheap by now, so if you haven't played it already, there's little reason not to. Otherwise, this game might be a little too generic for your liking, but is still reasonably fun.

The game is too short and too boring. I can’t believe I wasted my money on this five-minute piece of crap. I am a die-hard Dragonball fan, and most fans would probably not complain, but feel hurt on the inside. I really hope Infogrames does not make the same mistakes on future Gamecube DB titles, and the next three titles for the Game Boy Advance. This game pretty much ruined my day after realizing that I was on Namek in about one hour of gameplay. I’m sorry to say this, but this is not getting the grade that I was hoping for it to get.

The first in a series of Dragon Ball Z games, The Legacy of Goku is mostly satisfying but has a few snags that prevent it from being a truly great game.

Dragon Ball Z isn't terrible by any means...it's just one of those Game Boy Advance games whose flaws stick out like Goku's massive anime hair. The quest is long and somewhat enjoyable, and the storyline makes the animated series more accessible to folks who haven't exactly followed the cartoon series. The game's biggest flaw: it doesn't capture the essence of the anime series. For a cartoon that just explodes off the screen with unreal animation and effects, the Game Boy Advance game comes off extremely rigid with absolutely no life injected into it.

Dragon Ball Z: The Legacy of Goku is an action role-playing game for the Game Boy Advance. Its storyline condenses the entire 92 episodes of the Saiyan Saga into a single video game. Fans of the series will enjoy the subject matter and lengthy list of cameo appearances, but devout RPG players won't find anything to sink their teeth into--since the game is short, easy, and lacking in imagination.

DBZ: Legacy of Goku on the GBA is a prime example of how game developers (in this case Infogrames) given the lucrative Dragon ball license to play with have produced some of the foulest pieces of software ever to grace the system, safe in the knowledge that rabid fans will snap up anything with the DBZ logo on it. It's probably best if I describe the game calmly and without prejudice to begin with so you have at least a good idea of what the game is about before I start to twist the knife.

Dragon Ball Z: The Legacy Of Goku is a bad game. In fact, it may well be the worst game of the year 2002. About the only redeeming quality it possesses is that it can be finished in well under five hours, making it so that the torture of playing the game itself is relatively short-lived. Goku, and Dragon Ball Z fans in general, certainly deserve a better legacy than this.
