There's no good explanation for why Final Fantasy V was never released on these shores in the first place because it surely would have been as well received as the other 16-bit games in the series. Be that as it may, consider this a clear-cut case of "better late than never." The sign of a classic is when you can approach it years and years after it originally came out and enjoy it because it still plays great--not for nostalgia's sake. Final Fantasy V Advance is such a game. In spite of its humble stature as a Game Boy Advance rerelease of an old game, those who like Japanese role-playing games shouldn't miss it.

One of the better Final Fantasy games, FFV improves upon the Job system but doesn't match the storyline of FFIV or FFVI. It's still one hell of a handheld adventure though.

After many hours of playing the game you can only conclude that it’s still a highly recommendable RPG for fans of the genre. The gameplay is deep, complex and varied and the fights and the design more than worth it. Of course the presentation isn’t anymore top of the bill, but the inspired setting and quite fascinating story make up for a lot. For those that can’t get enough of Final Fantasy this is an absolute must-have. For everyone also also very recommendable!

Final Fantasy V isn’t exactly remembered as the best game in the venerated series. It lacks the compelling characters and epic spark of other entries from the 16-bit era; with Cecil and Kain on one side of the Final Fantasy continuum and Kefka on the other, it’s not surprising that it doesn’t quite measure up to its contemporaries in terms of story.

Of course, no matter how startling this game was in 1992, today it feels a little Fisher Price. But, that said, this is more than just a museum piece for today's JRPG fan. The speed of the gameplay is in stark contrast to today's lumbering epics, something that suits and shines on the GBA. Portable gaming and RPGs are hardly the most reasonable of marriages but you'll find that a surprisingly satisfying amount of progression can be made in your 30-minute commute. The game brilliantly balances the four essentials of successful RPG craft: a compelling story, quick-paced and deep fighting, compulsive team and item management, enjoyable side quests and secrets for the completist. So, while this probably won't be the last time Final fantasy V is released for a contemporary system, it may well be the best.

This middle child really had something to prove with its siblings making waves all around it. Final Fantasy V Advance stepped up to the plate by providing players with a quality port with a nice handful of bonuses. Though the game may look dated, with its impressive job system, classic soundtrack, and endearing dialogue, gamers that find the time to pick up this title will find an enjoyable and challenging RPG.
