The one game that probably got me into this whole world of handheld games was the Atari Lynx version of California Games, and more specifically the amazing rendition of the surfing game on the handheld. I had hours of fun with that game, and to this day I've been somewhat surprised that nobody ever attempted to recreate that design on current handheld hardware. Until now. The similarities may be coincidental, though...but I'm convinced that HotGen used that Lynx minigame as a blueprint for its first GBA surfing title. The game's not very deep...but then, what the heck can you do on a constantly flowing wall of water? Kelly Slater is an excellent, intuitive surfing game that's a whole lot of fun to just kick around on the varying sizes of waves. And it looks just beautiful on the GBA system.

You can pull off impressive combos with ease, but you'll need to know what you're doing to score the big points. A special meter across the top of screen increases with every trick, so the better you perform, the easier it is to pull off the crazy stuff. Pro Surfer's music is great, and a gnarly surfer dude offers constructive criticism like "You suck!". Kelly Slater's Pro Surfer is a pleasant surprise to say the least. If you're looking for a surfing game but have been disappointed with the PS2 and Xbox offerings, give this old-school throwback a try.

Ultimately, Kelly Slater's Pro Surfer is yet another great release for the Gameboy Advance. It takes a limited formula and stretches it to breaking point. Achieving high scores becomes incredibly addicted and is a great alternative to standing placidly at a bus stop, while you await the no 37. It may not be the best sounding game ever, however the superb visuals and enjoyable gameplay will be more than enough to keep you happy for some time. Activision have once again delivered a title that's perfectly suited for it's medium. Nice one.
