Serious Sam Advance is a decent game and a good try at taking the popular franchise across to a portable system. Considering the limitations of the console, Climax have done quite a decent job as the game is playable but inevitably it does suffer from a few problems. However for anyone wanting a game to pack in their pocket for a quick play while traveling then Serious Sam will definitely suffice as just like its predecessors on the PC and PS2 it doesn't involve much strategy and is all about the action.

Serious Sam Advance almost gives the GBA another good first-person shooter, but misses the mark because it doesn't offer enough levels.

It's been more than three years after the debut of the Game Boy Advance hardware, and we're well beyond the novelty of seeing first-person shooters on the system. After well more than a half-dozen attempts at the genre on the Game Boy Advance, we're way past the point where we question if it's possible; now we're at the point where we have to ask: was it necessary? In the case of Serious Sam on the handheld: no. No it wasn't.

The problems with Serious Sam are reasonably serious but the fact that it's incredibly difficult to play because of that pesky frame rate and even then it's a little on the short side should be more than enough to send alarm bells ringing when you're considering a FPS. On the plus side though there are some unquestionably cool items of firepower at your disposal and the thing that made the original such a hit (mindlessly mowing down everything that moves) is still very evident here. There's also the multiplayer, which is always a bonus although you will have to find another three friends with copies of the game. Overall though Serious Sam offers a mediocre gaming experience in a genre that's not only already saturated, but already contains some excellent FPSs. If you're a huge fan of Sam then you'll probably give this a look but with titles like Ballistic and the classic Doom already discounted in most stores you'll have to think hard before you actually invest.
