Gold and Glory: The Road to El Dorado

Gold and Glory was a pleasant surprise to this often jaded player/reviewer. It was an added review-making treat to play this with a child, observing her enjoyment, as well as her flexible thinking and problem-solving skills. This isn't the kind of major production we find with Grim Fandango, but Revolution has to be pleased with and proud of this product. There are rich graphics, an entertaining story, and solid, integrated puzzles. Taking it as a full-family adventure title, with little to no violence, and the strongest language being when one of our heroes is called "craven worm and popinjay," I am pleased to heartily award a Gold Star.

At the end of March 2000, Dreamworks SKG released its newest animated feature movie, The Road to El Dorado, which told the story of two Spanish con men who unwittingly become stowaways on a ship under the command of the explorer Herman Cortes and end up finding the mythical city of El Dorado. Now ... remaining very true to the storyline of the movie, Revolution Software (best known for its wonderful development of the Broken Sword adventure games), along with game publisher UbiSoft, has brought us a fun-filled adventure game version of the story, which is available for GameBoy, Playstation, and the PC.

Koniec końców, gra Revolution z pewnością warta jest tych 19 zł, które należy na nią wysupłać (ostatnio widziałem ją w kiosku w jakimś czasopiśmie za 8 zł!). Jest to przygoda pełną gębą w starym, świetnym stylu. Choć bardzo krótka i łatwa, przeznaczona jest nie tylko dla najmłodszych, a każdy, kto ją kupi, będzie mógł znowu poczuć się jak Indiana Jones czy dzieciaki z "Goonies". Piękna grafika, podniosła muzyka, dużo zabawnych sytuacji... wszystko to powoduje, że stawiam "Drodze do El Dorado" porządną ósemeczkę. I plusik. Bo jest cholernie fajna.

Aqueles que assistiram ao incrível desenho O Caminho para El Dorado, da DreamWorks, certamente, devem ter se divertido com as trapalhadas de Túlio, Miguel e o hilário cavalo Altivo, em busca da perdida El Dorado, também chamada de Cidade de Ouro. As gargalhadas, situações cômicas e as cenas de aventura do filme poderão agora ser revividas em Ouro e Glória: O Caminho para El Dorado.

The game is (unfortunately !!!) short, but nevertheless I extremely enjoyed it. Gold and Glory - The Road to El Dorado is funny and most ingenious, the puzzles really make fun. The price is also unusually low, so its a must-buy for adventurefans.

Miguel and Tulio have a rollicking story of comradeship and high adventure to tell in this game. If you've seen the Dream Works movie then you'll immediately recognise that the two adventurers are retelling how they saved El Dorado from the clutches of Cortes. I haven't seen the movie so this review is a reflection of how the game stands on its own.

El Dorado is een leuke adventure die de tekenfilm eer aan doet maar die voor de doorgewinterde gamer een tikkeltje te makkelijk en te kort is. Voor de jongere spelers een zeer geschikte game.

El Dorado bez najmniejszego problemu można ukończyć w dwa, góra trzy wieczory, a co później? Moim skromnym zdaniem 99 PLN za kilkanaście godzin zabawy to jakby nie patrzeć troszkę za mało. Po raz kolejny okazało się, że zapowiedzi producenta, czy też dystrybutora niekoniecznie mają przełożenie na rzeczywistość. Fakt, faktem w El Dorado gra się całkiem przyjemnie, więc jeśli szukasz mało skomplikowanej gry, która zapewni tobie lub twojemu dziecku sporą dawkę emocji, Droga do El Dorado będzie idealnym wyborem.

Wo immer Tulio und Miguel auch hinstolpern, den schrägen und herzzerreißenden Humor kann ihnen niemand absprechen. Die deutsche Sprachausgabe gehört für mich zum Besten, was ich auf der PlayStation bisher gehört habe. Zusammen mit der dreidimensionalen Zeichentrickgrafik erzeugen die Entwickler ein Flair, das dem des Kinofilms sehr nahe kommt. Zwar orientieren sich erfahrene Abenteurer immer noch in Richtung Discworld Noir, doch für eine atmosphärische Tour mit den beiden Halunken bleibt auf jeden Fall Zeit. Gold und Ruhm: Der Weg nach El Dorado solltet ihr euch auf jeden Fall einmal anschauen.

El Dorado ist ein 3D-Abenteuer wie Die Flucht von Monkey Island - nur leichter und mit Streichelzoohumor. Per Tastatur lenken Sie ihr Chaotengespann durch hübsch gepinselte Hintergründe. Wenn ein Gegenstand benutzbar ist oder mitgenommen werden kann, blinkt er auf und wird bald darauf zum Teil einer Puzzlelösung. Für Kinder ist Der Weg nach El Dorado das perfekte Abenteuer, für Erwachsene ein kurzer Spaß nebenher!

The Road to El Dorado is een leuk en knap adventure dat echter wat licht is uitgevallen.

Ein Duo wie Tulio und Miguel möchte ich öfter in Adventures sehen. Die beiden Streithähne kommentieren sarkastisch jede Aktion; der lachende Dritte sind Sie vor dem Monitor. Durch das Umschalten zwischen den Jungs bieten sich clevere Kombinationsrätsel an. Leider nutzt El Dorado diese Möglichkeiten kaum. Die Aufgaben sind kindgerecht einfach, das Inventar bleibt überschaubar. Nervig: Viele Situationen müssen zweimal absolviert werden; langweilige Hüpfeinlagen nehmen außerdem einiges Tempo aus dem Spiel. Die Ideen der Filmvorlage hat Revolution eiskalt verschenkt. Was hätte man aus dem Götter-Bluff machen können! Im Spiel wird er komplett ausgeklammert. Größter Wermutstropfen ist die katastrophal misslungene Steuerung.

Es ist ja erfreulich, dass Ubi Soft erkannt hat, wie gut sich Abenteuerfilme zur Umsetzung als Adventure eignen. Doch der Versuch, damit die große Schar der Gelegenheitsspieler anzusprechen, dürfte niemanden glücklich machen. Die Zielgruppe wird der gemächliche Spielrhythmus anöden, Adventure-Freunde hingegen bekommen nach etwa vier Stunden Unterforderung schon die Endsequenz gezeigt.

While it successfully recreates the spirit of the Dreamworks animation, missing plot segments and far too much hand-holding prevent The Road to El Dorado being one that all gamers should travel.

We have a saying in "the biz" that goes something like, "Games based on Hollywood licenses rarely turn out to be good, and adventure games based on Hollywood animated series licenses are even worse." Actually, we don't have a saying like that at all, but I guess we do now. And despite the overwhelming truth of that statement, El Dorado seems to just slightly defy it - all things considered. But it still isn't any fun, and it still has lame voice acting...and even though it's a brilliant product tie-in and marketing vehicle that will probably make more money for the publisher than two games that kick ass, it doesn't mean you have to buy into it.

Gold & Glory: The Road to El Dorado is a simplistic, extremely short experience, with abundant flaws that outweigh its few redeeming features. While this game may be marketed to younger moviegoers and El Dorado enthusiasts, the simplicity of the adventure is nullified by the obtuse nature of the control and gameplay. Fans of the movie may want to rent this game, if only to watch the cutscenes and experience the story again for novelty's sake.

The Road to El Dookie is more like it. I can see it now. Some poor kid is going to get this game for Christmas, and after seeing how incredibly ripped off he got, he will eventually grow up to be a bitter old man. This game is targeted toward children, but I highly doubt a child, let alone an adult, really wants a choppy and incredibly slow point-and-click adventure.
