Nintendo Power Magazine
The only good play control element in Grand Theft Auto is the operation of the power switch. That being said, the game has a lot in it for patient players who don't mind exploration. It's a big place with a lot of trouble to get into. The only problem is you couldn't see trouble if it walked up to you and whacked you with a cement truck.

The games only interesting feature would be to see how many people actually still find the game fun without the mass violence of bigger brother. The game should seem right at home with the old-school overhead view, but the minimalist graphics ruin any chance this game had. Throw in a lackluster control scheme and you've got yourself a game that never should have been released on this console..
As much fun as the game can be in the beginning, eventually running away from the police and following missions becomes boring. Grand Theft Auto is not really a terribly bad game, but only worth shelling out the cash for if you know that you are a fan of the game.
It's great to see console ports on the Game Boy, especially when the games looks as good as Grand Theft Auto. For what its worth, control problems aside this game looks a hell of a lot like the PlayStation game. And that's the problem -- as close as it is to the original, a bad game is still going to be a bad game in a smaller package. Only buy this game if you liked the original -- otherwise steer clear.
All Game Guide
Even though it is an outstanding conversion, that means little in the grand scheme of things. GTA isn't a very good game in the first place, and shrinking it down to portable size certainly hasn't helped it in that regard.
