When Heroes of Might and Magic first appeared on the PC, it drove legions of turn-based strategy fans crazy with its complex battles, micromanagement of castle resources and entertaining puzzles set in a fantasy world of goblins and dragons. The Game Boy Color version actually manages to pack all the punch of the PC version down into a manageable size, and, amazingly, it's just as addictive as the PC original, even if the sprites are quite a few sizes smaller.

While the Heroes of Might & Magic series has gotten a lot more sophisticated in its third installment, at its heart it's still the same as what you get here. In that respect, this Game Boy conversion is an interesting and successful experiment in porting PC strategy games over to handhelds, and it bodes well as to what kind of games we could get on the Game Boy Advance (Civilization, anyone?). Game Boy HOMM has its problems, but if you can tolerate the miniscule graphics and fuzzy strategic overview, you'll find it has its moments. It's probably best suited for those times when you're fiending for a serious strategy game but can't get yourself to computer. A great way to kill an hour or two.

Now 3DO has released a GBC iteration their famous strategy franchise. It's a great concept --now we can all get our strategy fix on a bus. But although Heroes of Might and Magic for Color Game Boy is not a bad game, serious strategy gamers will find it lacks the depth of its PC-based big brother, while Game Boy fans may find it a bit too complex to enjoy.

In all, Heroes of Might and Magic is an average strategy game that tries very hard to bring as many aspects of the genre as it can to the Game Boy Color. While fans of the series will be glad to have something to take on the road, many will find the unattractive graphics and complex gameplay a waste of time on the small screen.
