Color makes a big difference in fighting games such as MK, since it's easier to see character movements against the background image. MK4 combines nice graphics and control for a true MK feel. The voices are muffled, but present, which is amazing.
I enjoyed Mortal Kombat 4 on the console systems quite a bit, but the Game Boy version just doesn't cut it for me. Playing alone with an overly limited set of moves against a dumb computer drone gets old real quick. The inclusion of lots of Kombat Kodes is nice, but it's just not enough to energize this lifeless port.

The game's fatalities are done a bit differently than the fatalities in the previous games. When you perform the move, the game cuts away to a short, grainy animation, presumably digitized from the arcade version. It's a nice, quirky touch that brings a little charm to an otherwise uneventful game. People looking for portable fighting-game action would do well to wait for Street Fighter Alpha, a much more responsive fighting game.
It's games like this that make me wish SNK would develop for the Game Boy Color more readily. We could really use King of Fighters or SNK vs. Capcom on our favorite handheld. Do yourself a favor and put the cash you were going to spend on this on a Neo Geo Pocket Color with some of the fighting games. You'll thank me when you're older.
Mega Fun
