The simple nature of the game hides a hideously addictive blaster, with some of the smartest graphics you'll ever see on the Engine. Graphics are among the best ever on the Engine, faithfully reproducing the arcade original. Music is superb, with faithful renditions of all the arcade themes. This game is spot-on: it has everything just right, the speed, the playability, the difficulty. If you have a PC Engine, you need this more than oxygen...

This classic side-scrolling was extremely influential on the shooting genre. Gradius is a difficult space shooter, but also insanely addictive. One aspect that sets the game apart is its innovative power-up system. As you destroy enemies, they produce icons you can "cash in" for new weapons or abilities. The more you collect, the better the available power-up. But no matter how much firepower you've accumulated, once you crash, you lose everything. A well-designed shooter with superb graphics and audio, Gradius stands the test of time.

The Nintendo version moves along at a hectic pace and is actually faster than its MSX counterpart.

With Jailbreak, this is the first coin-op conversion Konami have done for themselves. Jailbreak was awful, this restores credibility.

Graphics are a bit blocky and pale, but it still plays like a demon. A flippin' good shoot-em-up, and the best version there is.

Colourful graphics but poor sound abound, but this doesn't stop Amstrad Nemesis being really addictive.

NESACE (Advanced Computer Entertainment)
This latest Konami product is an intelligent conversion, tailoring the game to suit the console's capabilities (there are only two drones available, for instance). As a result, it's colourful, smooth and pretty much flicker-free. It's also very addictive! A definite must-buy.

As well as packaging in all the features of the coin-op, Konami have added plenty of their own in the form of cheats and hidden bonuses. On each level it's possible to get an extra man and 5000 bonus points by completing a set manoeuvre, and there are also a myriad of other secret bonuses and warps which I'll be revealing in Playmasters in the coming months. Nintendo blasters are rare beasts, so don't let this one escape.

A bit of colour clash here and there, but rootin'-tootin' kill-blast action all round. Well worth the wonga.

If you can manage to live with the admittedly horrible slowdown, you'll find that Gradius is a thoroughly enjoyable shooter with a good difficulty curve and solid gameplay. The game was a hit when it was first released to the Arcade and, with the exception of the slowdown, is a very good conversion on the PC Engine. If you're interested in shooting games at all, you need to include this game in your library. Not only is Gradius one of the most important games in the development of the genre, it's a lot fun, as well.

Like the arcade version, the Speccy Nemesis is very fast and very hard. The ship is highly manoeuvrable and the aliens whiffle about like nobody's business, knocking you out before you really notice. In fact, the collision detection is the game's single major flaw. To avoid the usual problem, Konami has you destroyed about half a sprite before you thought you'd hit anything - a bit irritating to start with, but you get used to it. Otherwise it's a faithful, no-frills conversion. The graphics have suffered by necessity, but if you can accept that you have a Speccy in your living room, not a four-ton three megabyte arcade machine and a lifetime supply of 10p pieces, Nemesis is well up to expectations. A deserved hit for Konami!

A playable shooter, this one. Admittedly, thers's some annoying sprite flicker and the collision detection can be a little unsatisfactory at times, but good variety in graphics and tough gameplay blends to make a good challenge.

Nintendo owners have had to wait a long time for this conversion and Konami haven't disappointed them. Watch out for even better things in the Nemesis series when Salamander is released in late '89 under the name of Lifeforce.

Nevertheless, the original Gradius remains a good game for its time and one that any fan of shmups must have tried at least once.

When reviewing classic retro titles, you have to judge if this game is still worth playing today. Thankfully, Gradius is a game that has aged much better than most shooters of the era, regardless of the fact that its many sequels have improved the core concept in practically every way you could possibly imagine.

If you enjoy relentlessly difficult space shooters, or if you just enjoy smashing spaceships into big rocks, Gradius should absolutely make its way into your Backloggery. Whether you play it long enough to discover every hidden 1-UP and warp zone or whether you’re totally lame and give up before making it to Stage 4, it’s a memorable experience thanks to the iconic enemies, the nifty scenery and sound effects, the pulse-pounding challenges, and the catchy, energy-filled soundtrack that I’m only just bringing up now in my concluding paragraph.

The original Gradius is a great, classic shooter that set the bar high for later games in the genre. This Virtual Console release is an emulation of the NES version, the most popular and notable rendition of the game, and the version responsible for introducing the Konami Code to the world of gaming. This version hasn't been previously re-released anywhere else, so the Wii is a good place to grab it – if you'd like to experience the arcade original instead, though, it can be found in the recent PSP release, Gradius Collection.
