www.nintendo.com:

There's one man you just can't clone.

Mr. Kiss Kiss Bang Bang himself glides onto the Nintendo GameCube in this all new mission-based adventure that deftly mixes high-speed driving, rail-shooting, stealth and first-person shooter (FPS) action.

Filled to the neatly brushed lapels with supermodelesque women, chortling villains, fast cars and secret submarine pens, James Bond 007: Agent under Fire may be even more Bondish than the movies themselves. Zipping from Hong Kong to Romania, the South China Sea and Switzerland, the not-exactly original story has an evil corporation bent on world domination via an army of clones.

EA sticks to formula too with the basic game design, allowing you to play on three difficulty levels. The objectives don't change as you move from Operative to Agent to 00 Agent; instead, you'll encounter more and smarter enemies. In a Nintendo GameCube exclusive, you get to pick the difficulty level each time you enter a new mission.

Agent under Fire awards points for things like accuracy, damage taken, finding golden 007 icons and executing extra-stealthy "Bond Moves," such as using your trusty Q-Decryptor to drop a crate on hapless enemies. Depending on your total, you can earn a bronze, silver or gold medal, which unlocks goodies like new weapons.

Most of the levels are good ol' FPS, but as with its earlier Bond game, The World Is Not Enough, EA mixes things up with rail-shooter and driving levels. There's also a stealth mission that requires you to tranquilize friendly British embassy guards with a dart gun.

For the most part the controls are well laid-out, with particularly clever use of the D-pad to cycle left-right through Q-gadgets and up-down through weapons. Unlike just about every racing game ever made, though, the controls in the driving missions use the A and B buttons to fire weapons instead of accelerating and braking. While the nonconfigureable setup is surprisingly easy to master on the Operative difficulty level, it's unduly frustrating to 00 Agents.

The authentic Monty Norman-written Bond theme (no pale MIDI imitation here, thank you) gets played for all it's worth throughout the game. Even though EA didn't secure the services of Bond movie actors, the voice talent is excellent. Whoever took over the role of M sounds just like Judi Dench. The actor who does R may not sound like John Cleese, but he strikes just the right note of peevishness and droll humor. Someone at EA must adore the maniacal cackle of the actor voicing arch-villian Nigel Bloch, although you may not after hearing it for the six-hundredth time.

The actors get a lot of opportunities to show their stuff. M and R provide exhaustive briefings before each mission. Bond apparently has some sort of thingamajig stuck in his ear, because M and R frequently call in to tell him what to do next. The missions are so straightforward, though, that most gamers can safely ignore London's rather obvious advice.

Graphically the game is solid, if not spectacular. Smoke effects are muddy and the ocean in one nighttime mission looks like slowly undulating asphalt. However the characters in the cinema scenes show lots of polygons. Bond's hand is nicely modeled and the Golden Gun glints realistically. Bond, who appears in the cinema scenes, has dashing good looks reminsicent of a young Martin Landau (the game's Bond is a composite of the many Bonds and is not modelled on any single actor), right down to the wry smile.

Of course the long-term value of a FPS lies in its multiplayer modes. Agent under Fire's are designed as mini-missions that take place across multiple levels. Combat Training, for example, can take place in a town, a manor or a castle, among other atmospheric locales. Choosing the Escort map requires you to protect a friendly VIP.

Bond and most of the game's enemies are available as multiplayer characters. For each mission you can pick the available weapons and allow use of Q's grappling claw and jet pack. The many additional options include low gravity, taking damage from falling, selectable power-ups and one-hit wonders. Exclusive to the Nintendo GameCube Agent under Fire are CPU-controlled bots, which can be configured for aggression and intelligence.

Progress is saved to a Memory Card (not included).
