Batman: Rise of Sin Tzu is straight-up Beat Em Up action. It succeeds at crating an excellent 3-D rendering of a classic genre. It’s almost good enough to convince me that the trip to 3-D for the BEU was a good idea…almost. If you are a fan of the Batman or the Beat ‘em up genre, the twenty dollars entrance fee into the world of Sin Tzu is money well spent.

I had a lot of fun playing Batman: Rise of Sin Tzu and even more fun when some other reviewers joined in for some cooperative action. This is definitely an experience that is best shared, but even if you are forced to play alone, you won’t find a more challenging or visually stunning Batman experience than Rise of Sin Tzu.

It's fun, very fun, and a very good beat-'em-up, but not so replayable as to spend 40 dollars on it. Rent it, or buy it in a year when it's a super-discount game or available second-hand.

The Dark Knight's videogame career has done little to broaden his popularity. While his 2001 debut on current generation systems was enjoyable in Ubisoft's Batman Vengeance (based on the animated series), his career was soon tarnished by Kemco's painful take on the Batman license. Batman: Dark Tomorrow, based on the dark and gritty Gotham City from DC comics, failed to stray from the gutter. Botched controls, horrid camera system, and generally bad -- it was indeed a Dark Tomorrow for Batman.

Not even the work of comic book great Jim Lee can save Sin Tzu from being a total loss. Okay, the graphics are fairly sharp, but that’s about all this title has to offer. On any system the combat stinks, but on the ‘Cube, it’s absolutely horrid. The controller simply wasn’t designed for this type of game, and this game simply wasn’t designed to be played at all. One-button combos don’t give the player the feeling that they’re a dark avenger of the night. There’s a lot of embarrassing stuff in Batman’s long history; and this game is right up there with Adam West and the last two movies.

Unfortunately not much can be said in favor of Batman: Rise of Sin Tzu. The fighting portions of the gameplay are uninspired, often monotonous, and just plain boring. And to make things worse the game is all fighting. That's right, no vehicles, no mini-games or anything that could otherwise break up the monotony. It's a great ride for the first half-hour or so, but most gamers will likely be looking for the power button soon thereafter. Someday a great Batman title will take the industry by storm, but that day is not today.
