By creating a world that defies almost every law of gravity and Newtonian mechanics, and populating it with quirky characters like the demonic Sinder and Fowl Mouth, a duck with a penchant for Raymond Chandler'esque drivel, Pseudo Interactive has captured the maniacal essence of old Looney Tunes cartoons. Each character spews snappy dialogue and boasts humorous animations, while vehicles lurch and wobble like rubber. The intuitive controls enable you to pick up and play, though navigating some of the tighter spots can get frustrating. Players used to Twisted Metal: Black's immense levels may find Cel Damage's too confining and get bored after unlocking them all, which won't take more than a few hours. In no other game, however, will you be cleaved in half by a bull who screams, "Long live vegetarianism," and love it like in Cel Damage.
Cel Damage is one of the best multiplayer games available for the 'Cube. Madden is deeper, but at the moment, I'm enjoying Cel Damage more. The multiplayer mode is very attractive to both casual and hardcore gamers. Despite the ridiculous Teen rating (for "comic mischief" and "violence"), I definitely recommend Cel Damage to parents looking for a game to get for the whole family. It's something that Mom, Dad and the kids can play, and best of all, it's something that they'd actually want to play! There is no blood in Cel Damage, and very little violence (the violent content is debatable. I mean come 'on, do you consider a vehicle-flattening sledgehammer violent?). If you let your kids watch Bugs Bunny cartoons, then there's no reason why they shouldn't play this game.
Cel Damage is everything a driving fighter should be: fast, varied, destructive, and customizable. That this title is both old and has received relatively little attention are both in your favor: you, the gamer can pick it up for cheap! So, if you too are pining for Mario Kart 64 battle glory days or are just a fan of driving fighters don't hesitate one more minute to snatch up this under appreciated gem.
You can probably tell that I'm a little pissed about how difficult this game is. It would be incredibly fun, but you never get a chance to learn how to play. You're just busy getting killed every few seconds. If there were a manageable learning curve, this would be a much better game. Alas.
Comme la plupart des jeux du genre, Cel Damage souffre malheureusement de son manque de renouvellement. Les parties finissent par toutes se ressembler et la lassitude n'est jamais loin. C'est d'autant plus dommage que la réalisation est d'un très bon niveau et qu'elle mérite largement le coup d'œil.
Cel Damage wirkt auf den ersten Blick wie eine gelungene Mischung aus Twisted Metal Black und Looney Tunes Space Race. Aber hinter dem vielversprechenden Spielprinzip und der coolen Cel-Shading-Fassade offenbaren sich bodenlose Abgründe, in denen irgendwo der Spielspaß verloren gegangen zu sein scheint. Was in geselliger Runde noch für ein paar unterhaltsame Duelle gut ist, zeigt bei Solo-Einsätzen trotz zahlreicher Interaktionsmöglichkeiten mit der Levelarchitektur und abgefahrener Cartoon-Waffen schonungslos sein mageres Gerippe: nur drei Spielmodi und gerade mal ein Dutzend alles andere als weitläufige Arenen sorgen schon nach kurzer Zeit unweigerlich für Langeweile. Hinzu kommen neben dem monotonen Spielverlauf und dem schwammigen Fahrverhalten auch noch völlig unausbalancierte Auseinandersetzungen mit den chaotischen CPU-Kontrahenten sowie ein fast unbrauchbares Radar, das zwar für die ersehnte Übersicht hätte sorgen können, letztendlich aber nur noch mehr verwirrt.
Cel Damage makes great use of cel shading, its looks like a cartoon and it works perfectly, the single player lacks long lasting appeal and you'll have to buy 4 pads to get the most from the game, but it is worth it.
Cel Damage works far better than expected. When a title is released with average press and very little, if any, marketing despite it being an EA title, things aren’t looking good. And the so-2001 cel shading style isn’t going to raise any eyebrows anymore either despite its striking and effective use in this title. But for those who haven’t found four player Smash Bros. to be all that entertaining (me and a few people at Microsoft, I’d imagine) then this is the perfect alternative.
Du wirst schnell merken, dass Cel Damage alleine gar keinen Spaß macht und ganz und gar auf den Mehrspielermodus ausgelegt ist. Und tatsächlich: Zu viert wird man doch mehr als eine halbe Stunde lang gut unterhalten. Du kannst deine Freunde nach Lust und Laune mit einer Waffe vermöbeln, von der Strecke drängen oder sonstwie malträtieren. Aber irgendwann ist es dann auch gut, denn die ständigen Wiederholungen nerven. Das einzig wirklich Positive an dem Spiel, ist die Grafik, denn die sieht tatsächlich gut aus. Die Umgebungen und die Charaktere sind recht nett gezeichnet und animiert, leider bleibt aber das Gameplay auf der Strecke. Die Level sind einfach zu klein und nach einer Weile wiederholen sich die Aktionen auf dem Bildschirm immer wieder aufs Neue. Hier ist Langeweile vorprogrammiert. Für kurze Zeit ist der Fun-Racer in Ordnung, auf die Dauer aber zu eintönig.
Pseudo Interactive's first Xbox title has quickly made its way over to Nintendo GameCube with a few improvements. Cel Damage, appropriately named, uses a graphical technique that was first popularized by Sega's Jet Grind Radio to give the entire gamescape a cartoon appearance. Essentially it is a Twisted Metal like demolition derby without all the grit and dementia, replaced by a more happy-go-lucky Warner Bros. world. It's purely mindless, annihilate-the-competition gameplay, and that's hardly a bad thing. However, it lacks long-term depth and is more suited as a multiplayer experience.
Although its graphics are groundbreaking, Cel Damage doesn't do anything new with the mini-genre of vehicular combat. Too few arenas, repetitive action, difficult AI and bad weapon balance add up to a bad game. If you want to try this one out, rent it, because one weekend of fun is about all you'll get.
If you're looking for the action/tactics mix of something like Vigilante 8 or even Twisted Metal, you'll be let down here--it's simpler than that. The game's multiplayer is its somewhat saving grace, as even the most hyperactive four players you're likely to get together will probably end up giving each other a little more time and room to run about and line up attacks. When players are going at it together, the game's innate humor and unpredictability definitely make for some laughs, and make up for its (single) button-masher status--nobody's likely to go around bragging about their gaming skills just because they happen to come out on top of a Cel Damage session. Of course, the Flag Rally and self-explanatory Gate Relay mode make for some variety, but it's the Smack Attack that offers the most fun--for players who can dial down their attention-spans and get some live friends to do the same.
Cel Damage is quite an amazing bit of eye candy, but it's a real shame that the game behind the pretty graphics just doesn't hold up.
Back in the twilight days of the mid-late 90's, a little genre (which I call Demolition driving) became a hit among gamers everywhere. Games like Vigilante 8, Twisted Metal, and other numerous franchises which involved vehicles blowing the nuts and bolts out of eachother, evolved to be repute titles upon gamers that wanted just plain, simple, multi-player fun. Now, however, we've just barely took our first stride into the next generation of gaming, and have been occasioned by having games like Twisted Metal Black. With the new generation, comes new games. Cel Damage is yet another game trying to break into this genre, and its result is a gray excuse for this kind of title, compared to others that came before it.
You'd think that this game would somehow be more palatable on the GameCube, but it's not. Unfortunately, the game's cel-shaded graphics are the real loser here, because they're wasted on the wrong title.
Rent. The game is a blast... for thirty minutes. The single player mode is dismal and as good as the graphics were, the multiplayer still lacked depth. As excited as I was to see a port from the XB to the GC, and to have a kart game, I was equally as disappointed. The game is a bottom line promotional tool for the developer. It was a rushed, unpolished game that loses its flavor quicker than Bazooka Joe bubblegum.
Gameplay confus, maniabilité des véhicules à la limite du supportable et intérêt limité suffisent à faire fuir tous ceux qui auraient été attirés par la beauté des graphismes. Quel dommage de voir un tel potentiel gâché par une jouabilité douteuse et par un gros manque de variété !
