Ultimately, F1 2002 is another great installment in EA Sports' long-running F1 franchise and a welcome addition to the GameCube's relatively small library of driving games. Fans of the sport who haven't had the chance to play this game or previous iterations of it on the other consoles would do well to pick it up. It might be the only one of its kind for the GameCube, but its merits make it a worthwhile purchase regardless of that fact.

As a racer it is only good, but as an F1 game it sets a new high-water mark for the genre. Those who think they're up to the challenge are encouraged to try a rental and those who are ready are already playing. Like the Marines, F1 2002 is aimed at the few and the proud out there. You know who you are.

Imagine you own a sports game for PlayStation 2 and you've played it for many, many hours. You have beaten the game, you've completed every challenge and unlocked everything there is to do -- and then the sequel hits the market about a year later. The original was great, so buying the sequel is a no-brainer. Now, if you own multiple consoles, you're probably going to get the version for the more powerful platform, right? Well, consider yourself lucky that you decided to read this review before going out and putting down your cash for F1 2002 for GameCube -- because if you own F1 2001 for the PS2 or the Xbox, you'll be in for a little surprise. F1 2002 for GameCube is a port of F1 2001. It is not the same game as F1 2002 for PlayStation 2, which was released at the same time.

Looks to be a port of F1 2001 for PS2. If you've played that, don't waste your time here. If you've never experienced F1 racing on a next-gen console, then try renting it, it may give you a brief thrill. I wouldn't recommend a purchase unless you're a hardcore F1 fan, or even more desperate than me for racing games on the GC.

In a word: Disappointing. Terribly disappointing. I haven’t had the displeasure of being exposed to this series before its release on the GameCube. Being an F1 fan, when I finally got to play this game, I have to say I was bitterly let down. EA Sports F1 2002 is a sub-par game that lacks graphical, auditory and gameplay finish. To say that I think this game should go back to the drawing board would be as understated as saying a full-force kick in the nuts only stings for a second.
