Every year it gets harder for EA Sports to convince the masses to shell out another fifty bones for the newest Madden. It's up to them to invent a fresh new perspective on gameplay to make it worth the yearly purchase. Not only is Madden 2004 the best in the series, but you won't understand how you could live without the new Playmaker feature and Owner mode.
Madden NFL 2004 is football the way you always wanted it to be: powerful and sleek all year long. Stock up the fridge, pay the electric bill in advance, and kiss your significant other good-bye. Madden NFL 2004 is a feature-packed football powerhouse that's going to keep you housebound for the duration of the NFL season.
Practice makes perfect and EA Sports is bloody well as near as it gets. All of the AI holes, specific playbooks and overall tight feeling of the game comes across as a polished and excellent version of the best sports game out there. Unfortunately, I wish that this game had two things that aren’t EA’s fault. An online option and a controller that actually doesn’t suck. The Z button makes my big hands feel awkward and I’d be itching to get online and play some tournaments.
Well, the moment of truth has arrived for John Madden?s all-star ensemble. Is the game too violent? The answer is nay. Are there too many sexual references? No. Again, the cheerleaders are scantily clad, but you can skip past that part, and it is just a five second segment. Is there cussing at all? Nope. Some of the songs have some bleeped out words, but you can find those quickly enough and delete the songs from the play list. Overall, Madden NFL 2004 is an excellent game, made better by good gameplay, easy controls, good sound, and, for some most important, great graphics. If football games are your thing, buy this today.
Madden is the deepest football game around. With modes such as Owner’s Mode, Franchise Mode, Mini-Camp Mode, Playmaker Control, Classic Team Editor, Madden 101, the new and improved create-a-team, and playbook editor, it really has much to offer. The only thing it needs is online play for Xbox Live. Madden NFL 2004 is so good, that you really don’t need online play, just playing the actual game by yourself is the best thing you could do. It just might be one of the best sports games ever. You will be playing this game forever, well, at least until next year's edition.
It's hard to say whether Madden outdoes Sega's ESPN Football 2K4 until we've had a chance to compare them - but Madden has set the bar high and as the only franchise with a college football counterpart this year, Madden has the advantage.
Once upon a time, thirteen years ago, Electronic Arts started the franchise that would rejuvenate sports titles forever, raising the bar with improvement every following year - Madden Football.
Madden 2004 is the standard by which other football games are judged. There is a reason for this. This storied franchise, which was inducted into the NFL Hall of Fame, features all the aspects and elements that are essential for videogame playing. Not only does this game look great, to the point of being almost rivaling what one sees on television on Sundays or Monday evenings, but it has challenge, and great entertainment value.
Madden NFL 2004 isn't just the best football game this year, it's the best football game this generation of systems. It's the game that will satisfy even the most hardcore, while bringing back those gamers who, for whatever reasons, felt the last few versions of the series simply didn't live up to the legacy of the brand. The game introduces the two best new features found in football games since the Franchise mode, as Owner mode would be a fun game on its own, and Playmaker control is simply the most useful new gameplay tool introduced into the mix in many a year.
Madden 2004 is not as much a game as it is an experience, and almost a religious experience at that. "If it's in the game, it's in the game" is not just a catch phrase. For Tiburon and EA Sports, it's a way of life.
Madden 2004's noises are indistinguishable from last year’s version, although some mediocre pop plays while you navigate game menus prior to playing. Al Michaels commentary is fine as usual and John Madden sounds like a total idiot. My theory is that the developers have done this on purpose. While Madden consistently and effortlessly make an ass of himself on television, his commentary in Madden 2004 is even worse than on TV because he tries to sound reasonable and pedagogical while making rambling, asinine comments. Maybe one day they’ll figure out a way to make him sound cool.
It's not an easy task for a development team to make enough improvements to a yearly sports game series to warrant a purchase every year. However, EA Sports has not only managed to add enough features and gameplay tweaks to make Madden NFL 2004 a more than worthy purchase for those who bought last year's game, but it has also created one of best football games to date. Madden NFL 2004 covers nearly every facet of professional football, but what makes this year's entry in the series so special is the fact that it ties all its components together seamlessly. Even the new gameplay features have been integrated incredibly well, and the result is a game that models the sport of professional football much more intricately than any other game before it.
Sometimes, it seems that there’s not much to say about a sports title. After all, what it does is obvious, what it looks like follows pretty closely from the structure of the sport in question, and features tend to be much the same across the board. The Madden series is different: it takes the factors that make any game great, and tries to apply them to football. 2004 has more depth, more speed and pace, and more of a certain unquantifiable flair -- perhaps due to Mr. Vick’s dynamic presence -- than any other football game on the market today. In the world of sports games the public demands from EA one thing each year, a new edition of Madden to slake its thirst for brilliant football action. Once again, EA has delivered.
Despite some enduring problems with the franchise, Madden just keeps getting better. This installment is the finest football game ever produced. It has a host of new features that make the game more realistic and adaptable to both the casual and the die hard fan. If you like football, you should own this game. Heck, if you even want to like football you should own this game.
So there we have it. In a nutshell, Madden 2004 is a highly polished product let down really by just the poor memory card management. As it stands the game will take up practically a whole 251-block card. If you have one of these babies to spare or have no qualms about saving a franchise then there is nothing to think about. You love gridiron? Then buy Madden 2004.
There's lots more I could say about Madden NFL 2004. The "clock acceleration" feature means you can play through 10-minute quarters in a reasonable time and end up with reasonable stats. "Madden Cards" add replay value with lots of unlockable bonuses, and the tools necessary to create your own team have been significantly improved from years past. There's plenty more, but the best praise I can give Madden 2004: it's the NFL game to beat this year, and unless the upcoming ESPN Football completely surprises us (which, from what we've seen, isn't going to happen), Madden 2004 is the game I'll still be playing well into the playoffs next year. And now, if you'll excuse me, I have to go lobby Larry Flynt for a new stadium.
I have to admit, I haven't played the game too often against the computer, only against friends. Maybe it's less fun that way, because the GC won't start growling when you run 90 yards for the touchdown while the defense is unable to catch you, but still this is a great game.
