Is this what video-game characters do when they retire? Play cartoon golf instead of grabbing stars and mushrooms? Most celebrities tend to save the golfing for after they retire from their ‘real’ job. Not Mario. Whenever Mr. Miyamoto and his crew aren’t having the pudgy guy hop on turtles and abuse mushrooms, it seems like Camelot is running right behind with the golf bag and the mess of nutty subgames. The latest Mario Golf this one on the GameCube is a fine expansion on the original N64 title, even though you can count the real gameplay enhancements on one hand.

A game like Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour can be extremely difficult to make. In order to create a game that Mario fans don't get bored with, but that golf fans don't find too offensive, a pretty narrow line needs to be tread. Nintendo and Camelot pull it off nicely, however, in a game that is likely to have you playing for hours, even if you're not originally a fan of Mario or golf. By combining the familiar characters from the Mario universe (complete with trademark wackiness) with gameplay that goes into enough detail to do the intricacies of golf justice, the game is sure to have mass appeal.

When you stand back and look at Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour on its own terms, you'll find an excellent game of golf that provides a different experience from that in other golf games currently on the market. But, as a sequel to Mario Golf for the N64, which was originally released four years ago, the game doesn't make too many enhancements to the basic formula established back in 1999. If you haven't played the N64 game, you need not concern yourself with this. But, if you have, you may want to give Mario Golf a rental before you take the plunge. Unless, of course, you're eager for more of what made that game as great as this one.

All things considered, Toadstool Tour is a successful installment of the Mario Golf series, sporting a wide variety of play modes, amazing animations and a undeniably fun multiplayer and single player experience. If you're into plumbers with no butt cracks hanging out, and a good simple and not too serious game of golf, this one is definitely worth a shot. Now, if you'll excuse me, Boo's getting a little mad.

The game certainly has its problems, but it's well put-together. The extra modes are almost more fun than the championship - collecting coins and beating your own (and your mates') high scores is as addictive as Monkey Ball's Monkey Target. The obstacle-ridden courses are a nice touch and the more players, the better it gets. Serious golfing fanatics could be disappointed but there's plenty here for everyone else.

The audio matches the visuals with bright cheery themes and sound effects. The music is typically catchy and well matched to the game, and it all comes together with the graphics to evoke a fun little cartoon world that isn't too saccharine sweet (how could a world with snapping giant balls hidden in the bunkers be considered overly sweet?). Nintendo has a design aesthetic and cast of characters almost as interesting as Disney or Warner Brothers, and Mario Golf plays up those rivalries to comic effect. Add in the solid gameplay that's a nice alternative, but not really a replacement, for stronger golf games like Hot Shots or Tiger Woods, and you have a great golfing game, perfect for a rainy day or parties around the old GameCube.

Mario anything is generally the great no-brainer in the video game world. He races, he swings rackets, and he plumbs (or whatever plumbers do) better than any other digital character in existence. Mario Golf is no exception, and earns its almost custom-built place as the GameCube’s best golf game. However, I can’t help thinking our plunger-wielding paisan phoned this one in.

Japanese developer Camelot Software Planning (Mario Tennis, Golden Sun) has for the last several years worked closely with the Big 'N' on the franchise, first turning out a well-balanced, well-received golf outing for Nintendo 64. Now it's back with Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour for GameCube, and the sequel is packed with more golfing goodness than ever before. But is it enough to sway gamers recently treated by the simulation-heavy Tiger Woods PGA Tour series? Keep reading.

In Mario Golf for the Nintendo 64, everyone's favorite plumber and his pals showed just how versatile they could be. The game was an enjoyable golfer that nearly anybody could play, but had surprising legs for such a simple game. Camelot, the developers of the original Hot Shots Golf, crafted an entertaining golf game that successfully capitalized on the broad appeal of Mario. The developer is back and is bringing the same formula to the GameCube. And while Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour brings back many of the same characteristics that made its predecessor so enjoyable, it falls short in other areas, keeping the game from greatness.

Of course, no Mario game is complete without multiplayer. You can play Mario Golf: TT with up to three friends in any of the game modes, and thankfully the game flow is pretty quick. As an added irritant, you can taunt your opponents while they're setting up a shot, which can indeed be distracting. No matter how you play, the game looks good. The colorful graphics are smooth, the camera systems for aiming work well, the load times are fast and the framerate is rock solid. The sounds and music are pretty generic, but don't offend. And neither does the game as a whole. Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour offers exactly what armchair golfers would expect. However, that's not necessarily enough. More creativity and depth would have led to a new boss; instead, this is just another member of the family.

Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour isn't half as bad as I made it out to be. The very essence of the game is captured perfectly. It's light, cheerful and a blast to play. However, for gaming purists the lack of consistency ruins much of the entertainment. Even then the game isn't totally a loss. For those with multiple gamers in the house (especially families) this is a wonderful addition to your game collection. My daughter absolutely adores the game. She loves the simplicity in the game, as well as being able to be competitive with Dad. With up to four players going at it, this is an ideal light-hearted family game which everyone in my house appreciates.

The characters are nicely animated and quite entertaining as they celebrate or grimace after a shot. The music is pleasant and includes some nice steel drum music. But easily the best aspect of Toadstool Tour is its fast pacing. There's virtually no load time so you can play eighteen holes in a matter of minutes. And when you get tired of regular golf you can try "Ring Shot, "Club Slots", "Speed Golf", "Coin Shoot", or assorted other side games. In the end, Toadstool didn't live up to my lofty expectations, but it's not a bad choice if you're in a mood of a quick round of golf.
