There's no Tom Cruise to push Mission: Impossible Operation Surma. There's not even a Peter Graves. Even with those tremendous omissions, the latest stealth-action game from Atari, developed by Paradigm, comes off just slightly north of decent. It streamlines a lot of the controls and functions that may have intimidated gamers who stumbled through Splinter Cell or Metal Gear Solid 2. However, for serious fans of the genre, this simplification of the stealth concept presents a problem.

The game plays like a direct clone of Splinter Cell. The crappy aspects of the game they add make this a joke. What is cool though is that Ethan gets a tranquilizer gun to knock out the enemies. Gadgets like the micro cord, emp gun, and wasp cam are also pretty cool. Despite not being impossible, Operation Surma is just really difficult. The 15 hour game can easily be extended to months if you get pissed at it. If you like Splinter Cell, you could give this game a try, but I would not recommend you buying Operation Surma.

To be fair, Operation Surma is not a bad game. It’s just hard to be impressed by a nice looking spy game with an uninteresting story and dumb A.I. when there are games like Metal Gear Solid, Splinter Cell and James Bond: Everything or Nothing. If you desperately want to play more stealth during the wait between Metal Gear Solid and the new Splinter Cell you should give M:I a go, but in any other case it’s not really worth the trouble. If you’re still interested you can always rent the game, it’s not too long so finishing it should only take you a couple of days.
