Red Faction II, for the most part, is similar to other FPS games. A minor change comes in the form of your teammates. They will stay beside you and help you out. In the missions where your teammates’ help is vital, the AI comes through and truly helps you out. That said, the game handles comfortably. The controls aren’t mind-boggling and are actually very easy to get the hang of. You have the standard shooting, running, and jumping here.

Gaming Target
Red Faction II takes place just a few years after the end of the original Red Faction. If you played the original, you will feel right at home with the new one. Don't worry though, there is no prerequisite for playing the new game as the two stories are completely unrelated. You are a member of an elite squad of six super-soldiers, condemned to death by the same man that "created" you. In various missions, you will fight alongside the other members of your team, playing off of their individual strengths.

That aside, Red Faction II remains true to the form of it's predecessor. It's a very solid game, and definately right up there in the league of TimeSplitters 2, Hitman, and the like. Great job THQ.

I’ve heard that Red Faction II was a sales disappointment on PlayStation 2, and I can’t for the life of me understand why. It’s definitely one of the best console first-person shooters on any system; packed to the hilt with blistering gunplay; a great selection of weapons; and Volition’s signature Geo-Mod engine, which allows you to blow up whole sections of the environment.

Red Faction II is a blast to play in multiplayer! There are a variety of different modes to play such as deathmatch, capture the flag, bagman, arena, and regime. Deathmatch is the standard, kill everyone and get the highest score mode. Capture the Flag is where players try to get into each other’s bases and steal their flag and bring it to their own. Bagman is similar to king of the hill; players must capture a bag and see how long they can hold onto it without getting fragged.

Red Faction II is fun, certainly, but the single-player is a bit too linear for my tastes and the game ends well before my bedtime. This really isn't a game to buy if you are only planning on playing it alone as you can easily finish the single-player mode in one weekend. However, if multiplayer is your thing, then RF II can be a lot of fun.

Still, Red Faction II is a gripping and action-packed experience that will appease if you’re jonesing for a straightforward FPS. Great levels are heightened by fully destructible environments, while piloting futuristic vehicles keeps the action from growing monotonous. Best of all is you’ve got a lot of very cool weapons to choose from including dual Uzis, grenade launchers, sniper rifles, and different types of grenades so you’ll never run out of ways to stomp, squash, and slay enemies. RFII is a very solid choice.

Red Faction II is a good shooter overall, offering up a short but sweet single-player campaign and a solid multiplayer mode for the long run. It's not long on looks, but it's got no shortage of action.
