Resident Evil 3: Nemesis is the latest in a series of ports to the GameCube---meaning it didn't get the deluxe treatment of the first RE that went to the console built by Mario. However, there's plenty to admire in this survival/horror opus---especially the indestructible title character who chases you through several rooms. Otherwise, the play engine and plot are pure Evil: As the last human being alive in Raccoon City, there are plenty of puzzles to solve (i.e., crates to push) and monsters to blast into spaghetti with exotic weaponry. The visuals are nowhere near those of the first GameCube RE---or 0 for that matter---and although this is easily the best-looking version of Nemesis to date, you can never fully shake the feeling that it's a 32-bit game. Only rabid third-installment fans and RE newbies need apply for this last escape.

Although certainly not revered for epic plot development, this direct port delivers suspense that can scare anyone into palpitations. Comparatively, the graphics and controls are slightly better than RE 2; but Nemesis just doesn’t hold as much classic appeal as its predecessors. Worth owning if you’re an RE freak or new to the series, but everyone else can rest easy knowing this isn’t a must-have.

Nemesis was never the greatest Resident Evil game. Actually, excluding the many spin-offs which Capcom has created over the years, Resident Evil 3 is probably the worst game in the series. Although, that doesn’t say much, because even to this very day, just like Resident Evil 2, Nemesis’ gameplay is still as enthralling as the previous and next Resident Evil game. Although, compared to the game’s successor Resident Evil: Code Veronica, Nemesis may feel a bit like a spin off since the story isn’t as compelling as others. It’s also a bit short, but Resident Evil whores like me will eat it up, and love playing it again a few years down the road.

As good as Resident Evil 2 is, it only allowed players to explore a small portion of the small mid-western town; a lot of time was spent in the police department and underground facilities. Teasing players with the small amount of time on Raccoon City's streets perfectly brings in Nemesis. Taking place over many new locations, Nemesis unveils new Umbrella Corporation secrets, brings back Jill Valentine (co-star of Resident Evil 1), and introduces the U.B.C.S. (Umbrella Biohazard Countermeasure Service) and the Tyrant-like character, "Nemesis."

Deaf Gamers
As we bring another Resident Evil review to a close it's a familiar story. Resident Evil fans will love the game and overlook the unsubtitled cutscenes. Nevertheless though it does rob deaf gamers of the story and puts a significant dent in our rating of the game. The game has loads of replayability and there are various bonus incentives for playing through at least half a dozen times, something fans of the series will greatly appreciate.

IGN
With the recently re-vamped Resident Evil and Resident Evil Zero titles drawing critical acclaim from everyone here at IGN, it's difficult -- no, impossible -- for either Matt or myself to recommend this game over either of them. Gamers who are expecting a similar experience with Resident Evil 3: Nemesis are going to be in for quite a letdown. The gameplay design is still as brilliant as it ever was on the PSX, but the overall package is not even close to earning its sticker price. However, if you've never owned a PSX and are feeling eerily nostalgic, then you could always consider it as an educational, historical, and enjoyable rental.

GameSpot
To put it simply, if you've never played Resident Evil 3: Nemesis, it's worth checking out this version as a rental just to experience some of the gameplay mechanics that aren't present in any other Resident Evil game. But it's still an incredibly dated port, and the fact that it retails for as much as a game made within the last year is quite despicable.

RE3 does, in fairness, change things a smidgen, giving the player the ability to create their own specific type of ammo, with the use of different types of gunpowder. In addition, Jill now has a dodge manoeuvre, which in theory enables you stand a better chance of surviving when it counts. In practice, however, this move causes its own problems, especially if you encounter the many crowded areas, as does the ammo creation system, unless you know what you need and when.
