www.nintendo.com – Nintendo GameCube:

Ah pity the fool who doesn't have Rocky for the Nintendo GameCube!

The Rocky movies created a legend out of a small-time boxer determined to succeed.

Now you can attempt to go the distance as the Italian Stallion and many other familiar fighters. Whether you're a fan of the movies or just like a good boxing game, you'll find much to enjoy in this buff package from Ubi Soft.

    Eye of the Tiger

Starting as a club boxer from the mean streets of Philadelphia, Rocky gets his unlikely shot at the big time in a match with heavyweight champion Apollo Creed. An underdog turned top dog, Rocky went on to face powerful pugilists in five wildly popular movies.

Publisher Ubi Soft doesn't pull any punches in its videogame revival of the Rocky series. With video montages of inspirational Rocky moments, 30 boxers ripped from the movies, voice from star Sylvester Stallone and a solid boxing engine, fans will find it hard to put down their Controllers.

    Movie Mode

In Movie Mode you fight through five chapters, each of which is based on a film. Key opponents include famous faces like Apollo Creed (played by Carl Weathers), Clubber Lang (Mr. T), Ivan Drago (Dolph Lundgren), and Tommy Gunn (Tommy Morrison). You must also face less well-known challengers, all of whom have been pulled straight from the big screen.

The exceptional fighting engine lets you throw high and low punches with ease. You can also modify punches by holding the R Button to perform uppercuts and hooks. You block with the L Button. Stamina and energy all fluctuate realistically during a bout and the tough AI forces you to adjust to each opponent's unique style.

Between matches, you train with Mickey (Burgess Meredith) in five minigames. You'll need to coordinate button presses to punch a speed bag, jump rope, do sit-ups and more. These minigames increase your stats in categories such as Strength, Speed and Determination. Fans will welcome the opportunity to relive famous scenes like the one in a meat locker.

Triumphing in Movie Mode will unlock new boxers and venues.

    Other Modes

While the Movie Mode is certainly the game's main attraction, other fun modes let you step into the ring with Rocky Balboa and his cohorts. You can fight any computer- or human-controlled boxer in Exhibition Match. In Sparring Mode, a single player can practice combos and technique against various AI styles.

Once you complete the Movie Mode you can compete alone or with your pals in a 16-man Knockout Tournament. Top prize is a championship belt.

    Graphics

Rocky does a great job of recreating the feeling and mood of the movies. All boxers appear with realistic facial details and outfits. It's fun to watch Rocky's look change as you progress through Movie Mode.

Sure, the character models look blocky, but so did the over-muscled originals. Even the animations accurately capture the movies' over-acting. For a sharper and clearer image, select the Progressive Scan option when playing on a TV set that supports that feature.

The arenas range from a local club with few spectators to huge arenas with thousands of cheering fans. Details like a stained-glass window in a chapel bring movie locations to life.

The soundtrack includes vintage Rocky cuts like "Gonna Fly Now." Stallone and other actors from the movies lend their voice talents to the game.

    Bottom Line

A solid package, Rocky is sure to please boxing fans with its rock-solid fighting engine. Plenty of authentic touches are sure to wow the movies' legions of fans.

www.nintendo.com - Game Boy Advance:
Once you turn your Game Boy Advance on and hear that familiar theme song, you know that you're in for the fight of your life. Relive the saga of The Italian Stallion in Ubi Soft's Rocky.

    I Am The Greatest

Sylvester Stallone's award-winning boxing movies (well, OK, only the first one copped any Academy Awards) have been faithfully translated to the small screen thanks to developers Rage Software. As street fighter Rocky Balboa, you must work your way up the boxing ranks to become the Heavyweight Boxing Champion of the World.

The road to the top is never an easy one. Along your journey, you'll face off against some of the greatest boxers in movie history, including Apollo Creed, Clubber Lang and Ivan Drago.

    Movie Mode

Begin your boxing career by hopping into the extensive Movie Mode. Following the main plot points of the movie series, Rocky must train hard and go toe-to-toe with 20 fierce competitors to become the best.

    Training Modes (Sans Beef Bullying)

Training minigames build Rocky's traits in four different categories: strength, stamina, speed and defense. Each training minigame offers an exercise in hand-eye coordination and response time. Those with underdeveloped motor-skills will be pleased to know that an auto-train feature can build strength without the hassle of hard work.

For those who are wondering, the classic beef-punching scene from the first Rocky didn't make the cut.

    King of the Ring

Once your training sessions are completed, Rocky faces off with the next-seeded pugilist to gain in rank. Emerge victorious by either knocking out your opponent within 15 rounds or gaining the most points by the end of the match. Points are accumulated by landing punches accurately and scoring knockdowns.

    Other Modes

For impatient gamers ready to jump into the ring, a handy Exhibition Mode is available. Simply choose any boxer that you've unlocked and face off against any other fighter of your choice.

Two players can compete in Versus Mode. Two GBAs, a GBA Game Link cable and two Game Paks are required for multiplayer action.

    Digital Actors

Ubi Soft has made good use of its movie license by including digital likenesses of the movie actors. Even Mr. T has reprised his role as the intimidating Clubber Lang. Hulk Hogan fans might be disappointed that his star-making role from Rocky III wasn't included, but this isn't a wrestling game.

Do you have the eye of the tiger? Prove your boxing mettle with Ubi Soft's Rocky for your Game Boy Advance.
