Even if you hate the 3rd person shooting levels, there is more than enough in this package to warrant a purchase or at the very least, a rental. The flying levels are as good as they have ever been and the multi-player is an excellent addition to the franchise. Basically you're getting two games in one with this package: a single-player campaign and a completely separate two-player multi-player version of Rogue Leader. Thanks to the single-player flying levels and the multi-player, Rogue Squadron III is a must-have for all Star Wars fans.

The Factor 5-developed GameCube flight-action-shooter Star Wars Rogue Squadron II: Rogue Leader still holds a special spot in the hearts of many Nintendo fans. Not only did the system-selling title deliver Star Wars fanatics frenzied dogfights over the Death Star, it did so with a level of detail unequaled by any other Star Wars offerings. It was, in short, a gorgeous undertaking, one that pushed the technical boundaries of GameCube so far that few competing software houses have caught up -- yes, even today.

Rebel Strike is really two distinct games that have been smashed together in an awkward manner. If you’re piloting a ship or vehicle you’re seeing the best the game has to offer, and in many ways the best any star-fighter has to offer. Conversely, the on-foot segments are just plain awful. If you’re a Star Wars junkie, or a fan of the first two games, Rebel Strike is definitely worth your money. Everyone else would be well advised to rent it first.

Deaf Gamers
Rebel Strike whilst not equalling the excellence of Rogue Leader's missions is actually the better game for deaf gamers. The fact that the game is subtitled and offers multiplayer games means that you'll get more fun from Rebel Strike. The 'on foot' sections of the game are poor though and take the shine off an impressive game. It would have also been good if the multiplayer games had been for four players but what is available is most welcome indeed. If you enjoyed Rogue Leader and you're looking for more quality Star Wars action, then Rebel Strike will definitely satisfy. Like Rogue Leader it's also one of the better games on the GameCube.

Douche froide, douche chaude.

The Star Wars series has nearly completed its theatrical run, but from the looks of LucasArts' current and future release lists, the saga will be lively on video game platforms for a long time to come. Take Star Wars Rogue Squadron III: Rebel Strike, the new sequel to Factor 5's graphics-intensive Rogue Leader, a Star Wars shooter that helped launch the GameCube two years ago. Like past Star Wars games, Rebel Strike does an impressive job of squeezing even more material and new scenarios out of a universe that's effectively based on just a few hours of film. The two previous Rogue Squadron games have already covered the interesting sequences from the movies pretty thoroughly, so Factor 5 has implemented a number of new mission parameters and gameplay components in an effort to keep things fresh.

All in all, Rebel Strike is a passable game, and more or less worth the price of admission (but this is only thanks to the fantastic co-operative play mode). However, with the lack of really fun and interesting missions (I never want to have to say, “That’s it! If I have to protect one more transport, I’m joining the Empire!”), and the flat-out boring commando missions, this game falls far short of the high standards Factor 5 has set for themselves. If, like me, you can’t bear to lose faith in F5, by all means buy this game – you’ll find more than enough here to keep you busy. For those who enjoyed Rogue Leader and are interested in a descendent of that glory, perhaps you should simply rent this one first. All in all, I for one am disappointed that I listened to the hype.

Despite the occasional frustration, Rebel Strike has its share of exciting moments, and the constantly changing scenarios will keep you wondering what the next stage has in store. Some of the locations are fascinating, like the water planet with its jaw-dropping waterfalls. I also enjoyed the delayed-explosion sound effects of the sonic charge weapons - very cool. Rogue Leader III is highly ambitious, but its pieces don't quite come together as well as they could have. In one instance, my pilot could be heard talking over his radio after his ship had been blown to bits! Despite the rough edges, fans of the series will appreciate Rebel Strike's fresh set of challenges. A two-player, split-screen, cooperative version of Rogue Squadron II is also included.

Trust me, I’m just as shocked as you are. Watching the once-infallible Rogue Squadron series fall from grace and crash and burn within the palm of my hands had me reeling and nearly in tears. The butchery that Factor 5 has inflicted upon this game has led to a disastrous release that will likely be remembered as one of the biggest disappointments in all of gaming.

Star Wars Rogue Squadron III: Rebel Strike is a disappointing title, as a result of a number of issues that could have easily been avoided. Factor 5 chose to mix up the series' tried-and-tested gameplay formula by shoehorning in on-foot segments that simply don't work. Moreover, these sections — as well as the poor plot and cut-scenes — detract from the game's few great moments. The exciting and fast-paced aerial/space combat that the series is renowned for is woefully underused, despite the fact that this is when the game is at its most fun. The inclusion of a cooperative mode which allows you and a friend to play through nearly all of the second game is this title's saving grace and should be the main reason for anyone considering it. Otherwise, this is a mostly passable affair, which is a great shame given the series' impressive legacy.

As a number of the EG staff were huge fans of Rogue Leader, there was something of a scramble to secure this one for review, but as it turns out, I should have let this particular star system slip through my fingers. Gone is the marriage of lush, detailed and hugely compelling space combat missions to key moments in the film trilogy, replaced by poorly put together ground-based approximations of the old style, and a series of gimmick-driven vehicle missions that barely even summon up an initial "wow" factor. Although die-hard fans of the series will buy it anyway and probably get some entertainment out of questing after the top medals and unlocking the "bonus" missions, it's a game for completists only. The Force isn't so much weak in this one as totally gone.
