Tiger Woods has already proven that he’s the best of the best but even the best of us hit that career slump. Yet when it comes to video games, the Tiger Woods PGA Tour series is at the top of its game and even more so now thanks to some refinements in all the areas that make this a beloved franchise. Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2005 might not feel like a complete all-new experience, but it does make for a far more complete package worthy of fans of the virtual green. So grab your ******** iron and let’s take on the world’s best golfers.

We're still not convinced by the putting, which tells you where to place a cursor rather than trusting the traditional 3D grid and your instincts. And the way the camera view blurs up and zooms out, when all you want is a quick look around the course, is as irritating as ever. But as a whole, this is the new benchmark in golf sims.

For many people, Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2004 was the best golf game ever to grace a console, combining deep gameplay, an easy-to-use swinging mechanic, and some revolutionary customization tools. So what did EA do to make this year's game better? Why they tore it down and started for scratch, of course! Well, that's actually a bit of a lie. The core gameplay has remained largely the same, but the additions to the customization tools and some new game modes manage to trump even last year's version, which didn't seem possible last September. How exactly did they manage to make Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2005 a better game? By making it more varied, and thus, more replayable.

It's that time of year again: winter is looming, the lure of the TV's warming glow grows stronger, and your copy of Tiger 2004 is completely played out. This is where EA's yearly installment comes in to play with Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2005, a title that has been refined and expanded to make it the best of its kind yet.

Time to test drive the ever-charming Tiger Woods’ latest title. Undoubtedly the king of golf to the mainstream audience, Tiger Woods has helped golf’s image broaden a bit from the typical, retired, white man game it was previously known as. Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2005, the game, has a similar broad scope as the game is much more arcade oriented than you would expect.

Overall, Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2005 is a great game and should be in every golf fan's library, though even casual fans of the game will get a kick out of all of the customization options and the dozen or so courses. While I would never before consider buying a Tiger game on launch day, Tiger 2005 just may have been good enough to change my mind for 2006.

Jokes aside, you can't go wrong with new courses, and the legend-related modes are fantastic. I especially enjoy how old-timers challenge you to a round on your user-made Dream 18 course. Although familiar, EA is still shooting par for the course.

Game Over Online
While it doesn't break any seriously new ground, Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2005 is still the best golf title around. The inclusion of GameFace II, Tour Difficulty mode and Tiger Proofing provides plenty of player customization options that fans of the sport will enjoy. Plus, the inclusion of Tiger Vision allows people who've never picked up a club to feel like a golf pro. If you've never stepped onto a golf course, Tiger Woods 2005 could very well be the best introduction for you.

Of course, if legends are your thing, then you'll be over the moon. But after last year's revolutionary success, this game - like Madden - is slowing down with age.

GameSpot
From strictly a bullet-point perspective, Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2005 is a more full-featured game than last year's (with the notable exception of the smaller number of courses), and it still stands as one of the best games of golf for the PlayStation 2. However, many of its improvements over Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2004 feel kind of incremental, and unless you're an Xbox owner who is itching to take the game online, owners of Tiger 2004 shouldn't necessarily rush out to pick it up.

As is Tiger Woods 2005. The new features are generally welcomed but don't change the fact that this is largely the same game you probably spent way too much time with last year. You get the feeling the developers have sort of maxed-out the capabilities of current generation systems and are now just trying to cram as a much into the packages as possible. But hey, sometimes more really is more, keeping Tiger firmly on top of at least one golf game.

I can’t really recommend Tiger Woods 2005 on the GameCube, knowing that there are few other good options for golf fans without wandering into that creepy Mario territory. You’ll have a good time playing around with the Make-A-Face and Tiger Proofing, not to mention the career mode that could keep you going for years, but graphic and gameplay issues might make you want to look elsewhere. If you’re going to get Tiger 2005, and have the option of another gaming platform, you may want to look there. Both the PS2 and Xbox provide online play this year, and you won’t have to swap discs.
